I clean mine with saddle soap, and then use the mink oil paste. I haven't seen any problems as far as leather cracking.

Here's what I was talking about. You can see the difference in the leather between the shank of the boot and around the foot area. Second photo is what both soles look like, and third photo is a close-up of the sole of the right boot. I hope this helps.
