You could do it that way but it doesn't give you the ability to adjust the flow. Manifolds also typically will have bleeders and such on them. If you do decide not to use a manifold I would be sure to leave room to put one in later. BTI

Or find a used electric furnace to stuff up in the rafters....

You need to put in a large moisture trap, not the typical moisture separator. By pulling your air from outside you are pulling very moist air, at times. You don't have any info on where you live, but unless it's very dry you will have moisture issues. After removing as much moisture as possible...
