    Lubrication Guide?

Can you recommend a good, reasonably simple, lubrication guide? A general overview of what types of lubrication should be given to what applications? Let's get all of the K-Y jokes out of the way as quickly as possible, I really am curious about how you can determine the best lubricant for...

    Labeling drill bits...

Is there any marking tool that would do a reasonable job of marking sizes onto the side of a drill bit? You'd have to write pretty small. Not sure my electric engraver is the tool for the job... ...in case you're wondering, I have a lot of loose bits I need to mic and label. Sizing with my...

Back to School for Bolster: What to Take With?

This ol' man is taking a class in Machine Tool Technology at the local JC. Looks like most our time will be spent around the mills and lathes. We actually got hands on the mills the first day of class :) I have never used a metal lathe nor mill so I'm very much looking forward to learning...

    MSC promotion 25% - Aug 27

Stuey alerted us to recent MSC promotions...sorry if this is a duplicate, I couldn't tell what was current and expired. But as of today, aug 27, get 25% off if you have 5 lines on your order sheet (yeah, 5 lines, not 5 items...so if you buy a dozen of one thing it still counts as "one item") and...

I need a different air hammer!

I've been "coping" with a Porter Cable PSH-1 Air Hammer for too long. It just doesn't have enough power. I can pay up to $200 to get a better one, can you recommend a good (more powerful) air hammer? It'll be run from a Devilbiss 30 gallon 3.5 hp (6.8 SCFM @ 90 PSI). Thanks!

Grinder / Buffer (1) Adaptor? (2) Safe wheel?

I have an 1800 RPM buffer with a 3/4" arbor. Two questions: 1) Is anyone aware of an arbor adapter that will take my 3/4 arbor down to 1/2? There are so many readily available wheels & accessories that are 1/2, it would be very handy. 2) It is generally a big NO-NO to mount a grinding wheel...

    Your favorite tape measures...

KLars and I were discussing tape measures, decided to post a thread about it. Maybe I'm strange, but I see BIG differences between tape measures. Here are my "tape measure prejudices": 1. Not a big fan of clunky big measures, even though they are typically rigid over a longer span. Just...

    Drill then ream

I'm reading a shop manual that recommends, for precise holes, that first you drill slightly undersize, and then you ream to the finished diameter. I don't understand this procedure...why is a drilling not sufficient? What's the reamer doing that the drill bit can't? And second question, are...

    Setting Up Coote Belt Grinder

Being inspired by amazing "how to's" in this forum, I decided I'd try a simple one of my own...setting up a Coote belt grinder. Rather than a gazillion separate postings and photo links, I took the easy, lazy route of posting up a PDF, hope y'all don't mind. Part I here. If you have...

    Oxidized Aluminum...Cleaning

What do you recommend for cleaning oxidized aluminum, as can be seen in the Proto flexible file below? Buffing, of course, but that won't do much for the recessed areas...

    Manual vs. Battery Impact Drivers

I have been thinking about getting an impact driver...don't need it too often but have wished for one of my own a few times lately. You guys who use 'em, is there a clear winner for low-usage situations? Manual vs. Battery? Are there advantages to each and if so, what are they? If you were going...

Do you heat your bearings b4 installation?

Do you heat your bearings before you install them? If so, do you use one of those $400 bearing heaters, or do you just pop them in a toaster oven on low? I have read that 250 is the maximum for a bearing preheat. What's your experience?

How important is TEFC for a shop motor?

So I'm looking to power a belt grinder and a sander with a 1 HP motor. They will be belt driven on a stand, machine at waist height, with the motor below. How important is it to get a TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor? They're so much more expensive, BUT there will definitely be wood...

Chipper: Cold Start OK, Warm Start Hard

I just purchased a used chipper/shredder with a big 10HP Tecumseh engine. It starts easily when it's cold and you choke it. But once it's warm, and you shut it off, it's hard to restart (with no choke or choke). What gives? EDIT: I should have posted in Free Parking; I realized this after...

Quickest, easiest metal treatment to beat rust?

I live near the ocean and am constantly fighting rust on raw metal. Obviously you can oil, Boeshield, wax, etc., and put other sticky or liquid solutions ON raw metal. But what is the fastest and easiest treatment that I can do TO metal, in my home shop, so that even when it's dry, I have...

Don't know what to do with Grandfather's lathe.

This family heirloom is causing me a lot of grief, I don't know what to do with it. Was my grandfather's, passed it on to my father, now it's mine. Yes I'd like a lathe in my shop, but one from this century, at least! So what do I do with this artifact? Restoring it sounds tedious (and I don't...

This Small Proto Torque Wrench Complete?

Picked it up for $5 at a garage sale, looks new, but am concerned something around the handle is missing? Is the handle just painted a pebbly black like you see here? Or is there a rubber cover or something that goes over?
