    Cable Puller: Crisis of Confidence

I own the American Power Pull cable puller you see below ("come-a-long" is what I've always heard them called). It is rated 1-ton for 2:1 safety factor, and 1/2-ton for 4:1 safety factor. Tomorrow I have to lift a 350-lb machine with it. (No, I don't own a block-and-tackle.) I have absolute...

WTB: 23mm box end (or spline) wrench

Looking for a 23mm box end (or spline) that is flat, no offset. That's probably rarer than hen's teeth.

    Wobbly chuck on Makita Cordless

I love my Makita 6213D. Yes, it's old 12v NiMH technology from ten years ago. But this is the drill that flew on the Space Shuttle to help build the Space Station, it's a classic! Problem is, the chuck is getting rather wobbly. You can grasp the chuck in your hands and wiggle it back and forth...

    Definitions of Tools

OK, maybe you've seen these before. Still, it's the time of year we could all use a chuckle. DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the...

Welding: Protect benchtop/floor from heat with HardiBacker?

Guys help me out here...I need to do some welding of 1 or 2" square tubing with my little oxy acet rig, but I don't have a good surface to lay out my project on. I need a couple square feet of good working space to do it. I don't want to burn my formica laminated fiberboard benchtop (obviously)...

What's the best day of the year to buy a C-man chest?

Is it the day after T-giving? Isn't that traditionally when the best sales are seen on C-man tool chests?

    Shop Vac Hose Tip

Costo sells Knott's Berry preserves in a 2-pack. They are held together with a plastic double-C shaped clip. That plastic clip fits the hose of my Rigid shop vac perfectly. Now I can wind the hose up around the top of the vac and secure it well. My Rigid came with a similar clamp, but it was...

    Loctite Blue Question

Hello, friends. I recently purchased some Loctite Blue 242, which is labeled "removable." I've not used the blue stuff before, by "removable" does it mean that you can move the screw or nut a little, after it's dried on? I'm looking for something that makes the movement of a grub screw (set...

Narrow Chest as Stand for Small Mill?

Do any of you guys have a recommendation for a tool chest that would act as a stand for my small (400 lb) mill? The mill has a base that is 16" deep and 13" wide. So the cabinet could be a little larger than that. I would love a stand that would do double duty and hold most of my machining kit...

Does Grizzly Tools ever have sales?

I don't recall ever seeing Grizzly put their tools on sale, unless it's those parking-lot sales of scratch-and-ding items. Am I missing anything, do they mark down on black friday or anything?

Help me buy a Hammer Drill

I don't own a hammer drill, but I have an upcoming project that will require lots of holes into concrete and brick. I have a nice magnum Milwaukee hole-shooter drill but it doesn't have the hammer ability. I've been told that hammer drill makes a world of difference in getting the job done...

FS Starrett 6" 16R Rigid Scale

I bought this for my machining class; used it all of two class periods. Got a rap on the knuckles from the teacher who said, "I told you to get a FLEXIBLE steel rule!" This one is rigid. So it's for sale. Those 100ths lines are AWFULLY close together, just warning you...kinda hard to read. The...

    Chapman Screwdrivers & Bits

I'm happy with this set of Chapman Manufacturing screwdrivers & bits I got a year ago, so thought I'd share. It's from a company that makes its products in the USA (Durham, CT). The bits snap into place with a detent ball, which I like, because I don't like magnetized bits. (Downside of a...

Buying from Enco...how often are there 'deals'?

I just put together an Enco order, but don't see any deals or promo codes for shipping, etc. Does Enco offer these frequently & regularly? Those of you who buy from Enco often, do you try to wait and catch the specials...are they regular, can you count on them like you can count on HF to have a...

How hard is a ratchet pawl?

I have an old out-of-production 1/4" ratchet that's missing a pawl. I'm toying with the idea of trying to machine a replacement for it. I suspect the pawl would be worthless unless heat treated to a useable hardness? Anybody want to take a guess at hardness range (RC) of a typical ratchet pawl?

    Hammerite & Krinkle Paints

I've got two small boxes I'd like to restore, one originally had a hammer-finish paint on it like Hammerite, and the other is a green Kennedy box with what looks like Krinkle finish. I've heard these are tricky paints to get a decent finish. (Last time I tried Krinkle I was pretty...
