CopDots - microdot identification for your tools

Saw CopDots in Lowe's today. Came home to research them before buying. It's microdot technology you (with the help of law enforcement) can use to mark and later identify tools (or whatever). A small glue pen is filled with thousands of microdots. You smear some of this very tenacious glue, mixed...

Bosch Multi Construction Innovation 5 pc. Drill Bit Set $10

EDIT: NO GOOD I'm told these ring up at $10 if you load them into your cart. Are they any good? "Suitable for drilling tiles, masonry, wood, metal, and concrete." Say what? http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00902306000P?sid=I0084400010000100545&PID=552179

Fein MultiMaster as Mini Chop Saw? Possible?

I have a Fein MultiMaster (like a Dremel Multi-Max or Rockwell SoniCrafter)... ...which I find very handy for remodeling projects on houses. I use it mostly as a plunge saw. It usually gets carried even when other saws stay in the shop due to size. The other day I was having to cut some...

    Stumped: Containers for Solvents?

I need to carry small amounts of solvents with me to jobsites. About 4 ounces would be good--lighter and safer than carrying a whole gallon or even a quart. I've never found acetone, lacquer thinner, mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, etc, sold in cans that small. I would gladly transfer to...

    Bolster's "Toolbox for Cleaning Stuff."

Bolster's "Toolbox of Cleaning Chemicals." EDIT: Please note this list has been significantly updated and extended, Jan 29 '13. The list got too long for one post, so it spills over onto post 11. Toolboxes for every conceivable purpose! That's my goal. Recently I created a "cleaning...

    Minimalist Project

Most of us try to MAXimize our tool collection, get as many tools as possible. No criticism of that; all well and good, I believe the more tools the better...at your base camp, at least. But when you have to schlep your tools around, and those tools DO get heavy, and they DO take up space, and...

When you need a big (2-1/2") wrench...what to do?

Seems I always run out of "big" sizes of wrenches when working on plumbing. Recently the plumber installed a new Kohler toilet for us and it started running a month later. Problem was the gasket from the tank to the bowl...it got installed crooked...I replaced it, but how the heck do I tighten...

    Vintage 1970 Locksmith Kit

This post is just for fun, something a little different. Here are some photos of my (now ancient) locksmith kit. Amazing I still have it! My dad bought me a Belsaw locksmith course when I was in 7th grade (mid 1970s) and when I entered highschool I became the school's locksmith. Four years, this...

Would you pay $12 for ACE bait-and-switch USA->Tai Pliers?

Help me make a decision here. During ACE's black friday promo, I picked up a $23 pair of Crescent needle nose pliers for half that. The pliers are CLEARLY and UNAMBIGUOUSLY marked USA on the website, which is why I bought them. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1289770...

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

Most of my tapped holes, regardless of which tap brand I use (most are the typical H2 or H3 clearance) give me more play than I'd like when I put in a screw. Is it my technique? I do all my tapping by hand, using the mill turned off. In other words, I drill the hole of the appropriate size...

I noticed that HD was selling Urrea (pronounced: oo-ray-uh) screwdrivers, so ordered myself a set of these Vato Locos. They are very reasonably priced; the most expensive of the set you see here was $2.69, the cheaptest was $2.01. As you may know, Urrea is the Mexican Proto. They used to be a...
