Help spend my dad's money on his 40x60 build

My parents are looking at building a 40x60x16. My dad is trying to do it on somewhat of a budget, while still doing it right. I come seeking suggestions for this space. It will be used for storing/working on cars primarily, and I'm sure my dad will spend every waking moment out there when he's...

Picture Request - White walls with black screws or drywall before mudding

I picked up a drywall screw gun that can accommodate 1-3" collated Senco style screws to install plywood walls on the interior of my detached garage. The 3/4" plywood I have has a white vinyl covering on it already, so ideally I would like to just use white screws to avoid having to paint them...

    (Another) wall covering question

Hey y’all, I’m getting ready to insulate and finish out the walls and ceiling. It’s a detached stick framed structure that doesn’t have any floor drains. The (currently exposed) bottom wood sill plate is anchored to the concrete. I mainly use it for storage, work space, and storing cars. The...

Hot Dawg sounds like a can of rocks being shaken?

So I finally was able to test fire the Hot Dawg today. New install, 45k unit. When I first got it to fire up, it sounded like a can full of rocks being shaken up. Is this the direct spark ignition? Or is it something else? It seems to run ok, it blows warm air out that's for sure.

HELP! Gas line trench full of water?!? Next Steps?

Dug a trench this weekend for the polyethylene gas pipe for a Hot Dawg. As we were digging, the trench started to fill up with water. Approximately 6-8 inches deep. Do I need to drain the water somehow before laying the pipe? If so, how would you recommend draining the water? I had to hand dig...

Looking at insulating a detached garage in preparation for a 45k Hot Dawg in Southern Michigan where daily temps in Jan Feb March are 26, 28, 37 degrees F respectively. Trench digging in wet weather - OK to proceed or wait?

Looking at digging the 24" trench for the gas line to my detached garage this Saturday. Weather calls for 50% rain from Thursday through Saturday AM, then 20% on Saturday afternoon. Should I be concerned about the 5" wide trench collapsing and covering up the gas line before the inspector can...

    Gable to Gambrel Roof Retrofit?

Has anyone here converted a standard Gable roofed garage to a Gambrel (Barn) style? I am working with zoning limitations (10’ max sidewalls, 16’ overall max height) on a 24x30 detached garage. I figure that I could use a Gambrel style scissor trust to gain additional height for a lift in a 20’...

I am looking at insulating my 2.5 car detached garage and running a natural gas heater. Right now the walls are wood paneled, and I can see some insulation poking out near the top plates.
