    Wood stove insert

No need to pull the insert out. All the debris just falls into the insert. If there is any kind of a bend in the liner you might have to get creative to clean up the ash that gets caught there.

    Wood stove insert

I have been heating my house with an insert for 20 years. Depending on the size you get, they are absolutely capable of heating a house if you wish. I currently have an insert by Pacific Energy. Throws a lot of heat. When I installed it I completely lined the fire place firebox with rock...

    Pulling stuff safely

I agree. Unless you're skidding at 50 MPH, you'd have to really get creative to create a situation where you snap a logging chain pulling 12" to 14" trees with enough force to worry about it coming through the back of your head. Hook them up, take your time, and skid them out.

    20x40 shop

I DIY'd my 25x35 over the course of 3 years...did everything myself but pour the cement pad. I have $40 invested...that's 100% turn key; electric, cabinets, insulation, finished interior, deck to 2nd floor attic space, and a used 2 post lift. Build thread: 25x35 Garage

    Turning tiny shed into workshop?

I think a lot of guys grew up working on trucks and cars under the shade of the tree in the backyard....so even a small shed is a step up from that. It will keep you dry and out of the elements. Great job. I am having a hard time imagining how you're ever going to get a 2 post lift to work...

How to build out the interior of the pole building

Thanks. I actually have a full second floor with exterior access. I went with attic trusses. See the pic below. And here's a link to my build thread...tons of pics: 25x35 Pole Barn

What do you wish you had done differently when you built your shop?

No idea. Floor drains never even occurred to me so I never researched them. I get a lot of snow melting of my tractors and snowmobiles after use (even when I brush as much off as I can before parking) and I get a lot of pooling in one bay. I also get a lot of rain that creeps under one of my...

What do you wish you had done differently when you built your shop?

I overthought my garage before I built it and really, there's not much I wish I had done differently. One real big one though that I am embarassed that I omitted...floor drains. REALLY wish I had floor drains.

I cant bring myself to toss/burn 2x4 offcuts

If they're not PT they get split and go in the kindling box. If they're PT they go in the yearly brushpile.

I need to cut a half inch off the bottom of an upper kitchen cabinet to fit a new fridge

Looks good. Did you check to see if the cabinet had face frame screws coming in from the cabinet on the left? Might be what prevented you from removing it if you missed those.

    ok wood stove people

I use this method in my masonry heater. The fire on top of the stack of wood in the firebox also provides for more efficient combustion. As the wood below gets hot it begins to vaporize and ignition occurs as the vapors travel up through the top fire. Now I don't know if the difference in...

    ok wood stove people

I use a small chunk of whatever Firestarter I find on sale at the end of the season. I buy them in bulk and then break them into small pieces the size of a Matchbox (the kid's toy car..not an actual matchbox). That and a small stack of dry kindling. Paper is fine too. I am 99% firewood for...

Insulating a detached 3-car log garage in Massachusetts

Sorry. That wasn't my intended suggestion at all. That PDF is neat. So it looks like log homes are exempt in Mass. and therefore his R8 is fine. So the question remains, what does he need in his ceiling...IF his detached garage falls under the same code? It would appear R49.

Insulating a detached 3-car log garage in Massachusetts

I am also in Mass. which is climate zone 5. If a free standing garage IS NOT subject to the same code as a home...insulate the ceiling with whatever you want and wrench away. I think you need some answers before you proceed. Does a detached garage have the same requirements as a home? If...

    Hanging a pot rack

Drill a small test hole in the sheetrock with your 20v. Use a paperclip or a small nail to get an idea of the clearance between the sheetrock and the cement blocks, if any. If the sheetrock is fastened directly to the cement blocks, I would just use Tapcon screws to fasten your rack to the...

Pole barn insulation - foam + batts?

Simple answer...yes. I have a similar shop on a 2,000' cold, windy plateau in the Northeast and all I have is 2" Polyiso in my walls. I can work out there on even the coldest January days and its comfortable. By comparison, my house has 2x6 walls and R19 insulation and it's also fine. So...

    Vehicle lift post spacing

I would absolutely wait until you know what kind of a lift you're going to purchase before having pads poured. I think you're shooting in the dark here.

People Who Have Influenced Your Garage or Shop Behaviors

I did not grow up with anybody in my life who liked to work on anything. Didn't take shop classes in high school. My dad is the nicest guy in the world...but he almost literally can't turn a screwdriver. It wasn't until I went into the military in the late 80's that I met the guys who...

What did I find in my driveway?

If somebody was shooting shotgun flechette rounds 30 yards from your house you would have known it. With that wadding and the washer it looks more like somebody may have been hand loading and firing a home made canon or a little toy canon of some kind.
