    Keeping Vehicle Maintenance Logs

This is what I do, almost exactly. I don't break it down in sections though, I just keep a running log. Should I have any major work done, in addition to keeping the receipt, I log a brief summary of the work done, where it was done, the invoice number and date. Does it matter the date I...

How to build vault / safe room walls in my existing garage?

Research hurricane/tornado safe rooms for ideas, especially if it's going to a place you spend some time in; a small shop or reloading room and not just for secure storage. Jim

How to reduce rain spatter on garage doors

How about a drain grate installed in the driveway along the drip line? Use Google images for ideas. just a thought... Jim

    Video Camera for Documenting Work

That would be the ideal of course. Many times I think faster than I type. I meant to preface the above with, "Once you assemble your recording equipment..." Jim

    Video Camera for Documenting Work

You probably thought of this but...Do a couple of dry runs. What I mean by that is do some simple routine maintenance projects such as oil and filter changes, a brake job, a coolant flush & fill, wiper blades, etc. Practice using the equipment before going for record. Is it easy to don and...

    Video Camera for Documenting Work

These are thoughts only and without regard to time or budget... I would suggest a multi-tiered approach; a body camera as you said with a clip-on mic, a stationary video camera with a wireless clip-on mic, and a still camera for when you want detailed close-ups. Add to all that a notepad and...

Beginning garage finish, things you regret NOT doing initially?

Upgrade to 20 amp and add a few 240 amp circuits. Document with photos and measurements everything in the walls and ceiling; stud/joist locations, wiring, plumbing, blocking, etc., etc. before hanging any wallboard. Jim

Utility Sink - Stainless or plastic

Check out used restaurant supply stores if you have any in your area. If they don't have what you need, wait a week or so. The inventory rotates on a regular basis. They also have SS prep tables, racks, large cookie pans that can be used for drip pans, all sorts of neat stuff. Jim

    April Wilkerson Shop Build

What's not done to code? Not intended to be confrontational, just curious. I know she caught some flak on the steel carport build for her folks from some viewers but as far as I know it's still standing. If I were to ding her on anything, it would be when she does structural projects like...

Best Way To Fix/Seal This Gap

If it's just trim, I'd go with PVC. A little more money than wood, but it will last forever. Jim

    Moving a mid-size lathe

This. Once saw a lathe topple and crush a guy's leg because these "pros" thought they knew what they were doing. Glad I wasn't the responsible party for hiring these guys. Jim

Telescoping Flag Poles w/ "Bayonet" Connections

+1. Aluminum telescoping pole. Been working just fine for the past 10 years or so. Also have a low voltage light on it for displaying at night. Jim

    Mice are killing me....

Another vote for the old school Victor metal pedal traps. I use peanut butter for bait. Never misses. The newer Victors with the plastic "cheese" pedals ain't worth a damn in my opinion. Jim

Joint Ownership of Tools & Shop Equipment -- Any Input/Experience?

Frankly, I don't see this ending well. I've seen too many families broken up over co-ownership of property and the division of "things" not directly covered in a will. However, if you still plan to move forward on this endeavor, formalize it in writing and above all, have an exit plan. Look...

EZ way to pull up attic decking held down by pneumatic nails?

With my luck, the flooring would be nailed and glued. Maybe consider going in the other way; pull down the existing sheetrock ceiling, insulate, and re-rock. How many sq ft are you talking about and how much stuff do you have to remove from the attic just to get to the floor? Pulling up the...

    Do my springs need tightening?

I suspect the spring with the horizontal stripe is either broken or lost its pre-tension and came unwound. I'm betting on broken. If that's the case, replace both. The other one is not far behind. Jim

Floor Jack will not pump up under a load

Start with the simple stuff first. Bleed it. Most manufactures have directions on their website on how to do this. Check YouTube as well. And yes, use a pump style oil can filled with jack oil to fill the reservoir. Jim
