i would remove one of the whip ends and go barbed with dbl Oetiker clamps if it was mine or hose clamp if i did not have or want an Oetiker tool

i use oetiker clamps when replacing fittings on those ( hot wire feed welder tips go right thru air hoses ) they have no sharp edges and you can usually slide the rubber boot back over them

Retract the tail stock all the way ( spin it into the housing ) it should eject the taper

There are online door spring calculators I have ordered from scratch before and got it perfect but you are right you need cables / track / maybe drums / maybe a heavier torsion bar/springs and door sections I think new may be best
