    Real sorry to hear that. Best of luck in the fight to get rid of it!! another reason is to prevent the accumulation of metal pieces IN your skin. Makes an MRI (should you ever need one) look pretty crazy & harder to read. All these TV shows showing guys tack welding with mere closed eyelids...

    Did you add any reinforcements? I try to add small steel plate pieces when the workpiece allows (clearance issues, mostly) so that the crack does not reappear again. (that was where it broke the first time, plus now it has gotten more brittle in the HAZ) But, "ya got 'er done"!

    I too have omitted the rust converter step depending on what it is I am painting. However, when the question is about ultimate durability I always use it.
