    The VISES of Garage Journal

Looks like that Charley Parker Vise has some potential. Don't worry if you got a good deal or not as there will always be someone who got a better deal or a worse deal. I think the important thing is to make that old vise the best it can be. Enjoy the journey of restoring it. :3gears:

Outdoor storage shed. Build or buy prefab?

I have built my own shed and bought a Lifetime Plastic Unit. Whichever type you get pour a 4" slab first. It will pay big dividends later. Building a shed was alot of fun and alot of work. I installed a 6' garage door so I would not have to contend with a sagging door. I had about $2k in a 10'...

Northern Tool Lathe, mill, drill combo. Any good?

My experience with combination Lathe/Mill/Drills is that they can do several operations but none of them well. You would be better off purchasing a separate lathe and mill.

    The Hand Plane Thread

Regarding the restoration of a Stanley Hand Plane. I prefer to restore one to as close to new condition as I can. I really do not care about the Patina as I care more about the performance and looks of the tool. Or course, if it is some kind of historical antique I would take exception. But all...

20" butcher block top or laminate countertop?

Woodcrafters has some pretty good deals on Maple Tops. I got a nice one a few years ago. I have also purchased some from companies on the net when I wanted different wood like Ash, but the shipping can be expensive. Also IKEA has some good deals on Maple Tops too. The manufactured solid wood...

Do you own a HAND impact driver

I do not use mine much but when you need it, it will do the job. I recently used mine extracting a stubborn rusted screw out of an old vise jaw. Otherwise I would have had to drill it out.

Garage organization? Is it worth hiring a company to help?

You should find your own way to organize your garage. That is the 'Zen' of the Garage. It is also the path of enlightenment weedhopper. Practice the principle of the '5S' and you will attain 'enlightenment'.

What do you guys use to sharpen your cutting blades, chisels, gouges?

I use Diamond Sharpening Stones (for lack of a better term). I have five sizes up 6000 grit. This is what I use on my Planes and Chisels. For my Knives I use my Baldor with a 1000 grit on one side and strop on the other. Also have a ceramic Vee for touch up. Would like to get some Japanese...

    The E-bay culture

Before you buy anything on the Bay you need to do research to find out the true value of what you are looking to buy. I have been caught in the same situation before.

    Copper pipe through foundation

I would run the copper through a lPVC pipe for protection. The only problem with copper is that sharp rocks in a foundation can cause penetration over time. Copper kills bacteria naturally and is the way to go for a water supply.
