What's wrong with Craftsman Hand Tools? They have served me very well over the years. I don't buy their other stuff, but Craftsman Hand Tools are a very good value.

Nice job on that craftsman Bigcaddy. I believe those are made by Columbian, for Sears but I am not 100% on that.

That is a cool vise with the spring loading. Who makes those contraptions? Also that Sheldon is neat too. I just did a refurb of one and posted it. I would imagine one could make a jaw insert of one had a Mill or a machine shop could make one or two. :3gears:

You could hand plane it. Thats how I refinished one of my Maple Tops. Turned out very well. I used Laquer instead of Poly.

Depends on want you want to do. I like a SS top for mechanical work and greasy work. I prefer hardwood for other chores. You can get some solid maple tops really reasonable. Masonite is good to have around, cheap, flat. When it gets too scared up, throw it away and put on another peice.

Make your own. Use Mueller or Pamona Lead Wire, Clips and Boots. They are top quality and last. Lead wire can be purchased in 100' Rolls

I would put the lead screw back in and close the vise. I assume it works (i.e. will operate back and forth). The Dynamic Jaw may have a few chips and burrs that contact the static portion as you try to remove it. Check the slide and file down any burrs or chips and try again. I would be careful...
