Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

I'm doing a couple vises right now (No.6 Records) that I plan on having for a very very long time, so I'm using POR15, and then painting a top-coat of Rustoleum Hammered finish (Dark Bronze). I figure if the paint ever starts looking like **** I can just take off the Rustoleum, scuff the POR15...

    Rebuilding a Series II Bridgeport

I'm glad this thread is back!! Can't wait to see how it goes. Mind if I ask why you took off half of the chuck jaws on the lathe?

Young Guy Garage Reno in Edmonton

Some new tools for the garage when it's finished! I traded the Kawasaki motorcycle you saw above for a 24" Mitutoyo Vernier Caliper and a 1 ton Arbor press (pictured below) yesterday, and then today I bought a Craftsman Block Grinder off of a guy for $60! 3/4 HP, running, in good shape with the...

    Compressor restoration

So I got this old compressor for free a couple years ago and haven't had a chance to do anything with it since, but I recently had a chance to tear it down. When I got it I turned it on, so I know it runs fine. The motor didn't have any noise that I recall, the pump seems to be practically...

    Another "What is it?" thread!

Alright, totally not sure on this one. A buddy of mine found this in his house when he bought it. Is it some kind of height guage, or meant to hold something at an angle? It seems to have angle increments marked at the pivot. Anyone know?

Repairing "The Oliver" My Cast Iron Shop Table

So I know next to nothing about fixing up cast iron, but I thought the trouble-zone for it was any temperature between 50 and 500, mind setting me straight? That is a nice job fixing that up, and an AWESOME table! It's amazing how quickly stupid people can break things. :P

I was in Vise Heaven today

Looks from the picture like the vise is actually supposed to be mounted sideways, to have that supported/extended part of the top as I assume a tool rest? ****** heavy-duty tool rest. :P

I was in Vise Heaven today

Probably just some big spikes driven in to add a little extra stability I would think?

What in the world is this tool?

Yeah, looks like it'd be a really old version of an inside micrometer. Something kind of like this old Starrett in a way. You can thread handles onto most inside mic's too so that you can get a measurment further down the bore or a measurement of a groove or whatever. EDIT: sorry, that picture...

Buying Machinery (Brand name specific) from the "older" days

So, Bubbles? What did you end up buying so far?? I'm a young guy who loves old iron too, so I'd love to see your finds! I'm personally in love with the old Hardinge lathes right now, but I'm still getting the garage renovated before I can look at getting much of anything.

    General home kit

Nope, these drivers are amazing. Almost every tradesman here will have at least one in his toolbox. Get yourself one if you order one for him, you'll buy another I guarantee. As for getting him garbage from HF (which in Canada would be the equivalent of Princess Auto) You said you aren't sure if...

    General home kit

Instead of a screwdriver set, maybe a Picquic screwdriver? I have had one since I was 18, and I won't let anyone else touch it. I have a couple full screwdriver sets, but use it more than anything. http://www.picquic.com/ As for the other tools, anything with a lifetime warranty. :P

    Black Hat Shop Works

    Sand-blaster?

I'll be doing an array of things eventually. To start with it'll be for stripping paint for restoring some old tools such as the Record vises (seen here) I'm doing right now, the Beaver benchtop drill-press, the compressor, etc. Air is a little bit of an issue for now, but once I get the old...

    Sand-blaster?

    Sand-blaster?

Alright, so I won't pretend to know anything about sandblasting, all I know is I just spent a few hours stripping paint off a couple projects and it's time to find one!! Anyways, I'm hoping you guys have some tips on what to look for, what to watch out for, and general price range for used...
