    Mechanics get screwed

"By owning the tools, there is a much greater incentive for the mechanic to take care and keep track of them. And the mechanic can often decide how much they want to spend on their particular tool set, from HF basics to every specialized tool in the SO catalog." ^X2 I did my wrenching as a...

    tool box INSIDE the house?!?!

No SWOMBO? Go for it! I had my c'man stack next to my dresser in my apartment all thru college. Across the room was my machinist box on a base, sitting on a small table. I had more tool boxes than furniture back then. It's your place and your stuff.

    it's garage sale season!!

Outlaw, I hear ya! One of my co-workers and fellow GJ guy (sits about 50ft from me) is a collector / local tool dealer. We sometimes meet up at the local car shows. He's spent the last 2 weekends rebuilding his smashed garage roof which houses a machine shop and his collection. Believe me...

    Open end wrenches

At the shop my dad worked at (metal stamping /machinery co) they issued you a complete set of Williams DOE and double box end wrenches 1/4" thru 1". I worked there in the 1970's and don't remember seeing many combos in the shop. I still have and use his set from the 1950's, though I've added...

New York Times areticle about generators and Sandy

"Everyone's cutting back..... Even Verizon." Yes, Verizon has competition. However I could be wrong, but the last time I checked, I have no choice for electric service.

New York Times areticle about generators and Sandy

I have several friends who work for LIPA and National Grid, some of who's parents actually worked for LIPA's predicessor, LILCO. According to them, it has been decades of systematically trimming back of routine maintainence, and working down spare parts inventory, all in the name of saving a...

    Portable generator sizing question (sorry)

I run a 12+ year old 5Kw Generac for my house. It runs 2 fridges, an oil hot water boiler with 3 zones for heat, CFL lamps, tv, and cable modem all at the same time with no problems. Ran it for 5 days last year after Irene blew thru Long Island, and again last week for another 5 days after Sandy.

Please School Me on Standby Generators

Sorry I'm late to the party, but we just got our power back (and internet)... My 5Kw, 12+ (?) year old (bought used) Generac saved the day for the 3rd year in a row! As far as loads go, it will run all my essentials, 2 fridges, a hot water boiler with 3 zones, a few CFL lights, cable modem and...

    What's my box worth?

Firefighter75, That 537 box is WAY nicer than mine or the one on C/L around here! I'd keep it.

    What's my box worth?

I'll give you 1 data point. I bought a KR-537-? a few years ago off of Craigslist for $275. It's in good condition, but was missing the whole lock assy. I made one myself instead of buying a replacement from S/O. Currently, there's "Rick Mears" edition KR-537 box on the local C/L for $225...

    Mill work

Typical drill chucks are not designed for side loads. Even in a real mill, you hold milling cutters either in a collet or end mill holder. YMMV

    Who's got lathes?

I had one of those Enco 4 way tool posts on my 10" South Bend when I first got the lathe. It was a PITA shimming everything. I finally bought a Phase II AXA wedge style from Enco when they had a sale. It was a night and day difference, as I was used to the Aloris we had at work on a Hardinge...

Tell us how you got into tools and such

Dad was a tool & die maker who also was trained in cabinet making. He did everything around the house as well as basic auto repairs. Dad had a shop with some small machines (lathe, drill press, table saw, etc.) in the basement, and was the go-to guy in the family. He did everything from...

    New to me KR557 KR537

I have the same top box, and left the dividers as they came from the factory. I was able to organize the box to fit my needs with the dividers just the way they are. I especially like the 7 narrow drawers for all the small stuff. Now if I could just find a matching KR557 roller locally.........
