Tips for Getting Better Prices at Local Parts Stores

I think to a degree, that's all of us. We have tools so we don't have to pay someone to do a job that we can do with a similar end result. I don't pay for maintenance on my car (to the extend I can as a non-professional), but I will accept that there are some jobs I'm not equipped for/educated...

Experience with Milwaukee Reps at Home Depot

You never have to deal with the cabinet folks? They're the reason I avoid HD at all cost now, I had one who simply would not leave me alone as we tried to find an appropriate bolt to put my engine mount back together. I love the toolboxes, but I'll only order them online from here on out...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Nick's Two-Car Detached Vdub Garage

Thanks Nick! This is good to know about the GTI, I'd definitely buy a manual and I may shy away from a tune if they're known to cause some headaches. I'm definitely going to have to look into the tire rack, I was going to build one but I'm iffy about my carpentry skills compared to my...

    Metric tools only?

This sounds like the smart move, especially for someone like me on a budget. If I had known earlier (and known the conversions), I probably could've saved a fair amount of money -- with that said, I think I'll invest in a few of the aforementioned SAE wrenches and sockets, to fill out my metric.

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Nick's Two-Car Detached Vdub Garage

Nick, this looks great! I'm jealous of your woodworking ability, and your attention to detail is incredible. I'm really interested in the mechanical end of things though -- How's the GTI been on maintenance, and how has work on it been ? I've got an '04 Jetta wagon up on jackstands right now...

Are they available for sale? How much? I'd love to get my pliers under control.

    Metric tools only?

I work on cars, I own VWs and a Mazda, everything 2000 or newer. Up until last week I owned exclusively metric, because that was all I ever ran into, and I didn't have money for much in the way of tools. I now own a set of SAEtan* ratcheting wrenches, because I needed something slimmer than my...

Harbor Freight 3 Ton Daytona Jack Versus Snap On FJ300 Jack

Welp, there's a $20 off coupon, and I've been eying the long reach, low profile Daytona for quite a while. I plan to use the cost savings of the coupon to offset the cost of the 3 year warranty, and since I have another, I've got options if one ceases to function. I'll report back with initial...

If you buy from harbor freight tools and have your receipts....

A buddy of mine had a few of them, we'd chase each other around with them. They're a bundle of fun until someone sprays the hose at you through one.

Those who organize and use labels tape

I got a label maker at Target, some clear packing tape, and a roll of magnetic material. I've been putting the labels on the magnetic roll, covering it with clear packing tape, and wrapping the excess behind the magnet in order to "seal" it against my dirty hands a little bit. It works out...

If you buy from harbor freight tools and have your receipts....

I filed ages ago, and I'm still waiting -- it's a shame, I'm about to buy one of the Daytona jacks ($20 off coupon!) and it'd be super helpful to have that gift card to take the bite off a little. I'm starting to reach a point where I'm not going to need too much more from them... Maybe that's...

    Harbor Freight Coupon Thread

Heads up to anyone who's interested, there's a $20 off Daytona coupon in the current email from HF. I believe it's good through the end of the month, I'm planning on picking up the long-reach low-profile Daytona jack on Friday with it.

    SDS mason drill bit extension

I bought a brand new Bosch SDS bit to start my project, though it seems like it's on the dull side now and they're cheap enough that I can purchase another one. My issue is more I feel the "standard" drill bit shanks are far easier to engage, where I've had issues with my FIL's drill not...

    SDS mason drill bit extension

Could someone explain to me the reason for the SDS design, vs a traditional bit shank (I think that's the correct term)? Using my soon-to-be father-in-law's hammer drill with SDS bits seems frustrating in comparison to my buddy's Dewalt hammer drill that takes standard shank bits. If it makes...

    HF Cherry Picker Hacks

Sort of an accidental hack, but my shop crane instructions appeared to want a pin in the arm's retaining holes, in lieu of the bolt in your picture. I got another pin from a display jack as I thought mine was missing a part, and now that's the part that holds my retainer in place. I still have...

    Nine's Garage

Hello everyone, I've been wanting to make a thread about my little slice of heaven, and finally got off of my lazy *** and took some pictures. I don't have much of the day my fianceé and I bought the house, but the garage was a pretty empty canvas. The earliest photo I have that I can find...
