Tools that are not used or seldom used can be stored much more compactly than the stuff you want easy access to. Pack your SAE stuff away in a sturdy box and see how long you go without needing SAE.

I've had a close call very similar to that. I use my pneumatic cut-off tools whenever possible. A little slower, but a lot more forgiving. Seems like it would be possible to make an electric cut-off tool that spins fast but less torque. The pneumatic ones bind and stop, vs. binding, kicking...

Mid boxes only add 2-3 drawers, not much space for the $$. If you want to add on, a new box or a HF side box is more cost effective, but more $$. I did not have more space, so I used a chest - 2 in my case to hold up my workbench. Lots more storage in the same space.

I'm a big makita fan too, but they are expensive. If the OP's dad also does yard work, the Ryobi line might be better than Milwaukee, makita, dewalt. Less expensive and they have a very broad line-up including yard tools.

Gasoline in one of those air-powered siphon cleaners works really well. I know gas is old school. As a kid my grandpa had gas in open metal wash tubs on each workbench in his tractor shop. Amazingly there was never an incident. Is brake cleaner in an aerosol can really safer than gas??

Do you have access to air? Pneumatic is cheaper.

I'm not a machinist, I've had good luck with the cheap ones. I have one that has an option to read-out in fractions which is nice when measuring for drill bits, bolts, screws, etc. Or when the print on the drill bit is too damn small.

Correct. The usable range on my motor was 2.5-12 volts. The extra resistor to set the minimum to 2.5 and only affects the low end. The max is still 12. This design keeps the motor in an operating range of about 100 to 7000 RPM. If yours is using the MC60 and a 5k pot, then a 1300 ohm...
