I've been planning on building a small one on my new patio. Everything I've read says to use fire clay for mortar as it expands and contracts at the same rate as the fire brick. Also leave an air gap between your fire brick and other building materials to allow for different rates of expansion.

Make sure you don't buy a lighted doorbell switch. The light bulb in it puts a partial short on the line all the time.

Don't use Plenum rated cable in an underground conduit. Plenum rated cable breaks down when it get wet. Get outdoor rated cable. Cat 6 does not give you more distance, it only handles higher frequencies. (I'd use cat 5e. Cat 6 is hard as hell to put connectors on and takes special connectors...
