    Gas Chamber for Mice

I've recently found out that I have a mouse problem in my (DETACHED) garage and my daughter suspects that she might have mice in her car. I came up with a simple idea to solve the problem but want to run it by you guys before I do something potentially stupid. My idea is to start my old truck...

    Under Cabinet Lighting

First, let me say Happy New Year to everyone at Garage Journal! So, I built a storage cabinet for above my workbench and I'd like to install under cabinet lights to help illuminate the work area. I would like ones that "daisy-chain" together (with one plug), are low profile and very bright. If...

Sticker Shock - Boiler for Radiant Heat

I bought my house about 2 years ago. It has a detached 24 x 48 garage with 10' ceiling height. You might say I bought the garage and the house came with it . The walls are insulated w. R-15 and the ceiling is R-30 (±). There is 1.5" thick rigid foam under the slab. The previous owner had...

    110 volts vs 220

I just purchased a new combination belt/disk sander with a 1 HP motor. It comes prewired for 110 but can be rewired for 220. I have both available in my shop. I've always wondered about this and now have the right place to ask the question: Are there any benefits from having a machine rewired...

    Tyvek Coveralls

My backhoe blew a hydraulic line on the steering this weekend. I'm going to have to go under the machine to do the repair and will have to lay in dirt saturated with hydraulic oil to work on it. I was looking at Tyvek coveralls to save my clothes from this. Before I buy them, does any one here...

    Stihl Power Sweep Advice

I have a gravel driveway and in the spring, I end with lots of gravel deposited on my lawn from the snowplow. It really raises hell with my lawnmower and looks like ****. I've seen videos of Stihl's Power Sweep doing a great job cleaning up this exact type of mess. Stihl makes two "multi-task"...

    Bug Proofing New Wood Shed

I just took delivery of a new wood shed. The understructure is all pressure treated but everything above the sill is basic pine. Before I start loading it with (dirty, nasty, buggy) firewood, does anyone have any ideas for a good way to prevent termites, carpenter ants, etc.? Thanks, Chuck

Electric Requirements for a New Compressor

I'm getting ready to by a new 230 volt, single phase 5 HP compressor. The specs say it requires a 60 amp dual pole breaker. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I'm looking at in my panel, but want confirmation from people who know for sure. Here's what I see: Thanks in advance!

    Question about transporting a compressor

Hi there. I'm hoping to get some expert advice here. I'm looking at a used compressor on craigslist. It's a 60 gallon vertical tank two stage. I have a pickup truck that I will use to move it if I buy it. It will be a long ride in below freezing weather. I'll have to turn it on its side to move...

    Opinions on this compressor...

I want to get set up so I can do some sandblasting. I know my current compressor isn't up to the job. I'm just a hobbyist so I don't want to spend a boat load of money. I saw this over the weekend at Home Depot and thought it was in the range I can afford. I'd like to hear whether the more...

Does anybody know what this is?

I found this in my basement and have no idea what it is or where it came from. Maybe a repairman for our boiler or something left it behind...?

    "New" Merrill Bros. Vise

I just picked up a rusty OLD Merrill Bros 6" vice over the weekend. I wanted a new project and came across this. It is a BEAR, weighing in at about 125 lbs. Just about killed my back moving it off my truck and setting it up for the "before" pictures. The main screw turns but the slide shaft is...

    Baldor Grinder Rehab

Hi guys. This is my first time posting here. I kept stumbling onto this site because I'm interested in tools (especially good old American tools) and every time I'd do some research, I'd end up on this site. Anyway, I found an old Baldor "Big Red" 812 RE Bench Grinder/Buffer for sale in a...
