Hobart 187 - My First Mig Welder!

Scored a barely used Hobart 187 yesterday. Seller said he used it to fix bleachers for a local marching band. Included an 80 cuft bottle (mostly full), cart, auto-dark Hobart helmet, welding jacket, gloves, clamp and 3 spools of wire for $425. I'm a weekend warrior without farm equipment and...

    Which Heavy Duty Come-Along?

I'm looking for a heavy duty come-along...perhaps 4-ton. Have a 12" pine stump to pull out and would also keep it in my Trailblazer for those unfortunate moments when off-road  While a relatively simple device, I know all are not created equal after a reading online reviews. Do you guys...

The Reed 2C I picked up recently had a short stay at my house. Many of you know Zoomieport and that he's been wanting to add the 2C to complete his Reed "C" collection. He stopped by this evening and brought a very sweet Wilton 600S to trade. Super nice guy and a vise nut! It's funny...we...

    Jacobs 633C Chuck Rebuild Question

Hi guys. I'm trying to free up my 633C chuck by taking it apart and cleaning it. I was able to remove the outer shroud as seen in the picture (The two C sections were removed also but not shown). Upon disassembly, I could feel what seemed like tiny metal chips in the gunk. I washed...

Good source for electric motor bearings?

Where's an economical place to find decent bearings online? I'm in need of two that are 16mm ID x 35mm OD x 11mm thick for an AO Smith 1/2 hp motor. A search for this exact size on Ebay brings one hit for $15 each. $30 a pair is really more than I'd like to spend for this motor. Any...

Do I Really Need a VFD?

Hey guys; I'm looking at an old drill press for my home workshop that needs a new motor. The simplest solution of course is to pick up a used single-phase motor. However, a 3-phase motor with a Teco (or similar) VFD has me intrigued. Had to read up on 3-phase and watch Youtube videos as well...

My Dad doesn't have use for his Rockwell 1" Sander Grinder anymore so he passed it along to me. I remember using it as a kid and found it to be a handy tool  Anyway, I need to repair the wheels somehow as the pics show. Can the outer elastomer (or whatever it is) just be removed? I...

    Help with Drilling Perpendicular Holes.

Hard as I try, drilling perpendicular holes free-handed through a 4x4 is difficult. I'm going to be tapping two holes into the end of a 2x4 so the holes through the 4x4 need to come out accurate (perpendicular) on the back side. What type and brand do you guys use? What do you like or dislike...

Vice Finish Preference - Original, Repainted or Bare?

I've seen some beautifully restored vintage vices on this forum. Obviously plenty of originals and some bare ones too (paint removed). At this moment, there's an Ebay auction about to end for a beautifully restored Littlestown 112 and no bids yet. The price seems right...not sure why I don't...

Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

I've seen some really nice vice restoration pics on this forum. How is the paint you used held up over time? Did you just use standard spray paint or something fancy like powdercoat? I understand alot depends on prep work. However, vices can see alot of harsh physical and even chemical...

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

A few of you know I've been looking for a relatively heavy-duty U.S.-made vice. Came across a CL listing today for a storage facility sale from 3-5 today only. One of the pics was a top view of a large vise sitting in the corner. Hmmm. Called the guy and he said it was U.S. made. Double...
