Dayton 8” bench grinder sluggish start?

Was given an 8” Dayton bench grinder that wasn’t working. Turning it on and giving a wheel a spin would get it going so it seemed like a bad starter cap. Replaced the cap with the same UF and the problem is still there. Grinder is wired for 110 currently. Thoughts?

Big @ss direct drive fan question

Looking at the 12’ model and wondering if anyone has one and their thoughts on it. It requires 110v 10 amps. The 14’ gear drive fan I’m looking at requires 220v 25amps. Price is within $150 . Space I’ll be using it in is 40’x60’, 14’ walls, 20’ peak. It’s a big spend and something I’d like to...

    Heat pumps and cold weather

In North Texas this week, we’ve had a run of cold days, lows around 10-12* and some days not getting above freezing. Our heat pump is an American Standard 5ton unit, 18seer I believe. We recently had the inside unit replaced as a whole as there was a leak in the evaporator coil. When the tech...

Help identifying and sourcing 4 pin connector.

We are in the process of prototyping a new lock system for work and need to make some adapters. We will need both the male and female portions either with a pigtail, as a complete cord which we can cut and use both ends or the bare unloaded connector with the accompanying metals inserts. Our...

GFCI and high any LED UFO lights

Somewhere in my browsing of the forum, I read a post where it was mentioned that having a GFCI outlet was a good idea for high bay lights. I will be running 3 circuits of lights between 16-20’ . It’s impractical to put a GFCI outlet way up there and I came across these that could be mounted in a...

Magnetic starter switch for 4hp compressor

The sticker on a new to me compressor says a mag starter switch is necessary. I turned to Amazon and there is quite a variety and price range and the reviews are all over the place. Can anyone recommend a decent one that won’t break the bank? Compressor will see very occasional use, probably...

    M18 nailer score

Was doing work at a pawn shop today and saw this nailer out of the corner of my eye. Tag said $160, manager made it mine for $120 tax included. Was satisfied with just the tool and ended up with the tool, a charger and a 2.0 battery. Now to find something to nail

    220v wiring, right or wrong?

And if wrong, what is the right way. History: When we moved in, there was a 4 prong outlet. I had an electrician out to do a few other things and asked him to swap the 4 prong for a 3 prong which is what all my welders have. The wiring at the outlet is what he did. The wiring at the panel was...

    Understanding 4 way switches

Because the confuse the hell out of me. I’m in the process of replacing all the toggle wall switches with rockers. The electrician must have been getting paid by the switch, the master bed/bath has 10 switches alone. The living room light is controlled by 3 switches. Replacing the switches one...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Finally getting a seat at the grown up table

I’ve been a member of GJ for a bit, lurking and reading mostly, posting on the handful of things where I have knowledge of, never had a shop/garage to share. Until yesterday. Some backstory, I’ve lived in an apartment for most of the past 23 years, traveling a ton for work. I started a side...

    Aerobic Septic System

First off, I apologize if this is in the wrong spot, a septic system feels a bit like an ancillary system of a shop much like AC. That being said, barring a locust swarm, Armageddon or the like, I will be closing on a house and shop at the end of the month. It’s a bit out in the country and I’ve...

    Drill press recommendations wanted

14 years or so ago I bought a Grizzly G7943 14” 3/4hp drill press used. It fit the budget at the time and other than replacing the belts a few times, the return spring and chuck once, I’ve done nothing else and it has served me well, easily 100,000+ holes in various steel. I learned early on the...

    Tubing notcher recommendation

I have a need to cope some 1” sch40. No crazy angles and I could probably get by with just clamping in a vise but this seems like a good opportunity to get a new tool which is never a bad thing. What brands have y’all had good luck with? Thanks in advance Scott Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Fabtech 2018 Atlanta

Was last week. Made a road trip and was able to check it out. Amazing to see the technology that is out there. Admittedly a lot of things were not practical for a home shop ( a twin robot fully automatic CNC pressbrake as an example) but was able to test drive a few welders and get some great...

    Band Saw Stock Holder Widget

Was cutting some stock today and happened on this widget for holding small lengths. I don’t claim the design, a gentleman on the PM site offered them around Christmas and I was fortunate to receive a set. Wouldn’t be to difficult to replicate Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Miller Maxstar 161 opinions

Been thinking about getting one for some light stick welding where 110v is a lot more accessible than 220v. Typical material would be 16ga with 10-12 2” long welds at a time then fitting up the next panel, tacking in place then repeating. Does anyone have experience with this machine and how...

    Steel furniture build

In the thread about what was done in one's garage today I posted some pics of the work in progress. Here it is from start to end I had been leasing a small commercial shop since I live in an apartment. As much as it pained me, I decided to give up the shop and put things in storage. It made zero...

    Dryer wiring assistance

So while not exactly garage related but knowing y'all will be able to help, here it is. At my previous apartment, the dryer plug was 4 prong wired as pictured. New apartment has a 3 prong plug which is the same configuration as the dryer had when new. I have the old plug ( pictured). No markings...
