Fixing a bad chuck with a 3D printer and a $0.70 needle file

I recently ordered a Dayton 1F612 drill chuck while going down a rabbit hole on pin vises. It arrived defective, with improperly ground jaws that grabbed at the back and then canted over as it was tightened down. I didn't worry too much about it as I had already found a better option, but I...

    Making the battery Makita won't.

This is long-winded. For the payoff, scroll down to the red arrow. I like my Makita tools. They're dead reliable, have excellent ergonomics and build quality and are consistently the best of the big brands when it comes to NVH. Unfortunately, I also like watching Torque Test Channel...

Best bang for the buck digital calipers

I picked up a few Shahe digital calipers the other day out of curiosity after I saw Mr. Pete mentioned they operated very smoothly in one of his videos. They make several types, but in my opinion their absolute origin model is the way to go. You can usually pick them up for under $30 shipped to...

    Really, Milwaukee?

$38 for a hole saw and it doesn't even include the arbor? It's not even carbide, just plain jane bi-metal. The top-of-the-line drill I'm going to use to spin the damn thing only cost $150.

    Trash Demagnetizer

I was cleaning out the shed and came across an old EI core transformer. Since tinkering is more fun than cleaning I grabbed some scraps and made myself a demagnetizer. It's pretty potent; my Kill-a-Watt says it runs at 160W, which is more than units that sell for $100. To test it out I ran...

    Help identify this vise?

I've spent about an hour on Google image search looking for a match with no luck. The star/flower logo on the side is pretty distinctive. Any ideas?

    A Tool Refinishing Experiment

I have a RHFT ratchet I picked up at a yard sale. It works well but the finish on the anvil and selector switch had seen better days and I was sick of scrubbing rust off of them. I decided to try to blue them after watching this video from Abom79: I used the same product shown in the video...

Good video on the Astro 40SL light and a couple clones

A good video demonstrating how 3 seemingly identical lights can vary drastically in quality and longevity: The thing that annoys me the most is that the changes in the clone units (aside from the lower quality LED panel) probably save less than $0.25 per light and result in vastly inferior...

Harbor Freight 5 drawer cart vs 26 inch cabinet

I'm planning on consolidating my mechanic tools into one rolling box. I'm torn between the 5 drawer cart with the optional folding side tray and the 26 inch cabinet. With coupons the prices are within $30 of each other. I'm leaning towards the cabinet for the sturdy work surface and larger...

    Too many impact drivers?

Convert one to a 3/8 impact wrench! Yes, I know there are adapters, but where's the fun in that? Also, they reduce torque and increase the overall length of the tool. I bought the 3/8 anvil from eReplacementParts. It was a drop-in swap for the 1/4 hex part.
