1 great old vise left for local pickup

I have 1 great old USA cast iron machinist vise for sale. (local pickup only, no shipping). They've all been in storage and are dirty and have light surface rust. They all operate fine. None of them have cracks, welds or damage. 1. Athol 324-1/2 X. Swivel base, 4.5" jaws, very nice condition...

Can anyone ID this old ring pull cabinet?

I know it's not a Union toolbox because Union had recessed ring pulls. I'm guessing it's only about 8" deep and almost all the drawers are very shallow. The lid compartment is also shallow. It might have had an outer cover since there's a slot on the bottom. I don't see any typical hardware...

Sandpaper - Are 3M Cubitron II and 3M Pro Grade discs the same?

3M Cubitron is the best sandpaper I've ever used but other than the 15 pc variety packs sold on Amazon you need to buy 50 pc packs to get specific sizes. I see that Lowes is carrying 3M Pro Grade discs in 10 packs of specific grits. Does anyone know if Pro Grade is just a retail version of...

$20 Delta 17" Drill Press Restoration

I saw this Delta Drill Press advertised at a garage sale for $100. Seller said "broken spindle don't want to try and find parts". After a few days I decided to go into the city to take a look. Other than the broken spindle it looked like a diamond in the rough so I bought it. It included the...

Sharpening files with vinegar - Before and After

I read about sharpening files with a vinegar soak and was very skeptical but tried it on a 16" Sandvik ******* file that would barely cut. I soaked the bottom 1/3 of the file in vinegar solution. I used 45% commercial grade vinegar cut about 50/50 with water. Prior to the soak I cleaned the...

Can you really sharpen a large ******* File?

I have couple dull 16" ******* files. New brand name replacements approach $60/ea. I stumbled onto a YT video showing a process of soaking in vinegar for a few days. Can you really get these big ones sharp again or is this just a short lived fix? Anyone try file sharpening methods?

    National/STAR Oak Machinist Tool Chest

I found this old machinist tool chest at a garage sale for $20 and couldn't resist. I believe it's a National/Star (Chicago). It was missing the lock, the front panel was a scrap of plywood, the leather handle was rotten, the felt was in bad shape and it was dirty. Fortunately the carcass was...

Stripped screw pliers - Engineer PZ58, Vamplier 6.25", Knipex Twin Grip 6"

I'd like to add a stripped screw gripping plier to my collection. (mainly for tightly gripping smaller screw heads in the tip of the jaws.) I don't care much about side gripping because I have other options. It seems like the options are Engineer PZ58, Vamplier 6.25" and the newer Knipex Twin...

    Delta DP600 Restoration Progress

So, I recently picked up this old Delta drill press for a "fun" restoration project. It's from 1946 and I believe it originally came with power feed based on the odd L shaped motor mount and a few other differences. It spend its most recent life as a dedicated tapping machine. Phase one...

    Really cool Delta DP600

I stumbled onto this machine for sale on CL. (not mine) It looks to be a tapping machine based on the DP600. I can't figure out what's in the "coffin" other than a motor. It looks like it could be converted back to a DP but it would nickel and dime you to death in sourcing parts.

    Delta DP 600 from WWII

I picked up this old girl and the serial number is from 1944. It's my oldest of five DP-600's. The price was great but boy was it ugly. Three layers of flaking paint, rust, stiff quill, dented hood, sluggish bearings. It's saving grace was it's completeness except for the chuck and it did...

FS: 12 pc Ratcheting Flare Wrench Set - SAE, Imperial Eastman

Anyone need a flare wrench set that ratchets? The tools in the roll look like new. There's an extra 1" that has a little surface rust.

    Free Pile (update: sold)

I started some tool box drawer organizing and came up with this pile of tools I have no use for. The three 0-1" dial indicators are NOS. The tools are free if you pay for a large flat rate USPS box. You have to take everything pictured. ($19.51 via Paypal family and friends)

Would you toss this Sawzall (Nicd)?

I'm about ready to toss this old Sawzall. It's only been used a few times and is in mint condition. However both Nicd batteries are dead. New aftermarket NiCd batteries are about $100 and they'll probably go bad in a couple years from sitting. My 18V Lithium platform is Makita. I assume...

    Another Delta Triple Duty Grinder

I just finished restoring this old girl. It was in great shape for it's age and the only parts needed were LED light bulbs for the eye shields, replaced glass lenses with polycarbonate, new cord and fresh grinding wheels. The name plates cleanup up like new. I cheated by deciding to paint the...

New Departure Bearings - How to restore tutorial

In the Delta vintage grinder thread some guys claimed New Departure double shielded bearings couldn't be restored. I told them they could and they asked for images. I have a new project with these bearings and here's how I restore them. IMHO they are among the finest USA bearings I cringe...

Recommend Bayphoto for real metal nameplates

I've used Bayphoto.com a couple times when I've needed a metal nameplate/badge for a vintage piece of machinery. Their process is ink infused on an aluminum plate and this is as good as it get's and superior to a decal or sticker. Just get the artwork (ex: vintagemachinery.org database) or...
