    Tyvek versus Zip Board

I used Zip's insulating panels on my house, and am now having our rental house resheathed (was just going to be new siding but the 1980s foam sheathing wasn't sound and hid a lot of mess >8-/ ). Ended up using 1/2" zip on the rental house. The cost wasn't much more than good quality sheathing...

Short on time & money for floor coating, sealing best option?

Densifier + ghostshield 8505 or 8510. If you're near Loudoun County you can check out my floor with the above treatment.

Insulating a floor / foundation tie in

Pretty much how my house and garage were built - foundation walls and an insulated slab poured afterwards, with a bevel. You can see the top of the beveled insulation in the garage, where I don't really care. Unlike yours, our walls were set to the inside of the foundation wall and the...

Tips & Techniques for everyday parking under a 4 post

^^^^ This. I just installed a 2 post lift and was trying to figure out the best way to align a car for lifting. Happened to.have a large convex mirror left over from the "let's not get killed coming out of the blind Lane" project. Works like a charm. Mine is overkill, something around 12" is...

Prewiring Network and Cable - Worth the Cost or DIY?

Hard wiring still has a place: wireless access point still need to connect to the network somewhere, cameras need power + network, media benefits, and there's still cable and broadcast TV/radio. I had the electricians run most of the network and cable, but ran a bunch of cat 6 to the soffits...

How many of you guys fix your own tires?

I do, and have had good luck with auto store repair kits for simple nail or screw pick-ups. If it looks like the tire took some abuse (big hit, run flat) I take it to a shop.

    Old 1880 Barn Shop Conundrum

I spent 20 years wrenching in a shed off a similar vintage corn crib, so I feel for you. But that's a beautiful barn. Count me in the leave it be & build camp. It's also way, way too nice to take down.

    2:12 pitch dormer

We used metal on the 2/12 portion of our roof. Shingles might work, but in the PNW do you want to take the risk?

Can mini-split line set be buried?

Sounds like you're all set, then.

Can mini-split line set be buried?

Climatecreator has a point, and maybe there is better than line hide. I lived 20 years in a 200+ y/o log house in NoVa, and think you have a few other options for running lines. First option: run the lines bare against the logs, inside or out. The copper will take on a nice patina that goes...

Why do so many garages north of Dallas use stub walls?

Ok, houses need to breathe :) It's all about context and design - my house is very tight and needs an ERV. We have knee walls, too, both house and garage. They're really just extended foundation walls rather than built atop the slab. The house's insulation envelope extends all the way...

    Garagemahal floor

We have colored and polished floors in the house and a plain hard troweled slab in the garage, here are some thoughts after living in the place for 9 months or so. The polished floors look and feel great. They are much smoother than the smoothly troweled garage, which itself is pretty slick...

    Lets see your workbench

First bench for the new garage is a rolling unit: ex-middle school rock maple bench top, on a 2x2x11ga steel trestle frame, all rolling on the base of a scrapped 47u server rack.

Propane tank size for radiant floor heat??

I assume you've had a heat loss calculation done? If so you know how many BTU will actually be consumed and your propane supplier should be able to model usage. If you're renting tanks you could start with the single 120 and then see how often the truck comes. Our well insulated house and...

    Ghostshield 8505 Vs. 8510

That might be right - I have 1100 feet of hard troweled floor and it barely took 5 gallons of 8505. The broomed outdoor may take more, so 15 gallons may be safe. Overbuying isn't bad, but then there are returns to consider. Pretty sure that the vendors here make that easy. I noticed no effect...

NEMA 6-50 plug and electric car

There are non-hardwired chargers, a quick look shows most are 14-50 but Clipper Creek's 40a charger is available in both 6-50 and 14-50. I just had a 14-50 outlet installed for my non-hardwired charger, but I don't have a 240v welder yet so 14-50 was an easy choice. IANAElectrician, so have...

Which concrete finish style for garage?

I have a power troweled floor that's had the densifier + ghostshield treatment. Nice & smooth, which I like but it but does get a bit slippery if you get it wet. Something you might want to consider for a commercial shop. It is more robust than epoxy, which is another consideration.

    Bolting Down A Safe

Nothing wrong with an RSC. My first one was installed into a space under the stairs where it slid *just* under a beam, so the bolts only had to keep it from being slid out. The new house has a 2nd floor closet built around an RSC. Either could be defeated by a thief with time and the brains to...

    Bolting Down A Safe

Assuming that if the safe on a second floor it's a gun safe vs a real safe-safe. IMO the mail reason you bolt it down is so the thief cant get it on to the floor or out of the house - either situation makes it very likely that he can physically overpower. So you want to make sure that the bolts...

    Oil Resistant Sealer

I've left very dirty oil on my 8505-coated floor for hours (drain pan leaked after I put it away) and it left no mark that a paper towel with some simple green couldn't completely pick up.
