Replacing Garage Door Side Jambs Without Removing Door?

Just an update on this project... I did end up leaving the door in place when changing the jambs. It worked really well. I did one side at a time. I did end up disconnecting the garage door opener, and used a strap the middle of the door to hold the door in place. Most importantly for anyone...

Replacing Garage Door Side Jambs Without Removing Door?

I appreciate the feedback. Reason I've been wanting to keep the door up is so that I can work on things slowly, not have to worry about getting the door back up in the evening if I don't finish the project. It's a 230lb 4 panel 16' door. Not too easy to dismantle without help.

Replacing Garage Door Side Jambs Without Removing Door?

I need to replace the 60 year old side jambs with 2x6’s. These are the jambs I’m talking about https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/framing-question-for-garage-door-track-mounting.367805/ . I’m trying to do it without removing the door… The torsion springs are off at the moment so the...

Price check on 1/2" harbor fright earthquake impact wrench, WTF ?

I own this gun; I paid sticker price around $95 plus tax. I didn't have a coupon at the time, but I'm pretty sure it applies. Even though I no longer purchase power or air tools from HF, the gun is pretty good for the price. I mainly use it to knock off the lug nuts during tire rotations; saves...

Purchased HF "Earthquake" 1/2 Impact; Low Speed Setting Not Working...

Thank you all for the replies. Yeah, I was hoping to use the low speed setting to put the lug nuts back on (manual says low speed is about 50fl/lbs), and finish off with a torque wrench. I'll try spraying it a bit tonight with Seafoam Deep Creep, and see if it helps.

Purchased HF "Earthquake" 1/2 Impact; Low Speed Setting Not Working...

Well I've recently purchased a HF 1/2 Earthquake impact, but I've run into an issue. I can't seem to get the low speed forward setting to work. On the low setting, I can hear the air moving through the tool, but there's no movement. If I give the shaft a quick spin, it fires right up. I've...

    HF 3-Ton Aluminum Jack #68052

Same here; I have the steel version as well, and I recommend it. The aluminum jacks weighs around 55lbs, while the steel version is 70lbs. That's only a 15lb difference; not sure if 15lbs if worth the extra $100 dollars.

    Garage floor post-prep question (Epoxy-Coat)

I would wait a few more days for everything to dry out; maybe even add a fan to circular the air. I waited 7 days during the warm summer months for my concrete to dry after I powered-washed/etched it.

    pc/computer in the garage

Word of caution... If you take a desktop into the shop; keep it behind a UPS or a power/line conditioner. Most desktop computers consume about 200 to 500 watts of power (with monitor), and constant power sags from turning on power tools can degrade the pc's power supply. I keep a laptop in...

    Garage mat /snow mat

I'm in the same boat. I want something on my floor to absorb snow and rain; but everything is pretty expensive. I've been thinking about purchasing a commercial carpet, with a rubber backing. That should absorb well, and then I can powerwash it come spring time... hmmm

Calling all that have or not use Flakes in Epoxy

No flakes for me, just kept it simple. I figured if I ever needed to touch up any areas in the future, it would be easier with the flakes in the way. But IMHO both look great. Though if you plan on clear coating, I think flakes are a good choice.

How to get rid of Mice

For mice and spiders, cleanness is #1. I've started storing as much as I can in plastic tubs; so when I get bored, I take out the tubs, run the shop vac around my shelves, then the nook and crannies, and then put the tubs back. I store everything in tubs; I've got a tub for screws and bolts, a...

    Need something cheap

See how well you can clean the concrete. Grab a power washer (2500psi+), some concrete cleaner, and have a go at it. For spray paint removal, I've had great luck with TSP and citric acid (don't mix them together though). If your concrete looks great after cleaning, you could epoxy it, clear seal...

    Blown Fiberglass or Cellulose?

Cellulose hand down. It's a natural product (mostly newspaper / paper products mulched with a fire suppressant added), most bugs hate it, mold doesn't grow well on it, and it's safe/easy to work with. You still need to use a good respirator, as it's a very messy product to spray.

Dumpster Rental -- tips or tricks?

 I threw out my entire kitchen that way :-) . I tossed everything into the garage, and over the span of 2 months, I got rid of it all. A cheap harbor freight circular saw, and blades, made the process go by pretty quick. I put all the wood bits into cardboard boxes, duct taped them...

    What is your preferred PEX

When I did my kitchen plumbing repair / update, I went with PEX from Home Depot, and their copper ring crimp system. I used 1" PEX for the supply, which had the approximate inner diameter of 3/4" copper that I was replacing. I also picked up a cheap crimp tool from Home Depot, that handled all 4...

    Steel Shelf as a Workbench?

Lowes is currently having a sale on their steel shelving, and I was wondering how functional a steel shelved workbench would be. My plan is to get two units, put two of them side by side (12' worth of workspace), then slap on a counter top to stiffen up the top. For about the same price I could...
