So after a pretty long absence from these forums, I found myself at an estate auction today, comprising Classic car spares, Cars and lots of tools.

It wasn't a successful day, an awful lot of items escaped my price range, which makes the one item I did buy all the more surprising.

Are you ready?

I know I know it doesn't look too interesting right?

Wrong:

20150815_144639.jpg

That's just the tip of the iceberg chums, I haven't had time for a good rummage yet!

Total cost? £22.40 / $35

I've been striking out everywhere but got this Today. Little cheap flashlight. Didn't think much of it till I saw the engraving. Its made by Ash Flash. And marked Hong Kong British Empire. I've been trying to collect some British tools so figured this'll fit right in that collection. May not be made in England, but British empire is still pretty cool.

Still in the dog days here: 5 planned stops, half lied about tools...

I bought no tools but did get a dozen NOS 10 A switches for $3 and an Aluminum griddle for a buck. I don't see ANY sign the griddle was ever used; only marks from racking and stacking...

Hopefully something more/better tomorrow like last week...

lol... I think my favorite pic is the seabea uniform although the crown logo wrenches are nice. Jury is still out on the vise. I got questions about the model number.

Picked up a dunlap 3.5" vise for $5 as well as a jacobs 1/2" chuck. Can't tell what is up with the chuck, the stem doesn't look like any if seen... The vise is missing the base...

ok this vise has a model number of 5196 on the lead screw. But it's a fixed vise. So the lead screw must have been replaced at some point with one out of a swivelin *******... Guess any thing could have happened between now and 9-56

on the shears:spit:... didn't figure you to have a green thumb...lol

Flea market finds this morning. ..Whitney no.5....box of USA hacksaw blades....Ridgid tubing bender...Nicholson file...Snap On---- 3 screwdrivers, 1 wrench, 4 punches/ chisels....Proto impact swivel...Mac socket...Channel Lock needle nose....Blue Point, 8 box wrenches. .. $120, not a killer deal but more than fair

The Nicholson Handy file is a favorite of mine. Goes in the home repair Toolbox , requires no handle, and has 2 different cutting faces. Does most any home repair filing job.

Are those the Bonsai shears above the Seabee jacket? I found a pair that looked like that in an estate sale pile and thought nothing of them.

Which ones are the desirable ones?

As for me, no picks today. We spent the day dropping my oldest off at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for Orientation. It was poignant - my first one is out of the nest. On the plus side, now I get to drive her '65 Malibu as much as I want. :bounce:

Well as for the bonsai shears the ones I have are , I Think, US made. The TOP desirable ones are Japanese. Yes it's the set above the Seabee jacket.

:3gears: Happy driving... And remember to leave it on "E" when she gets home... :)

Got this flexible 6" stainless steel rule with pocket clip (not pictured) marked "Goodyear Industrial Rubber Goods" as well as stainless made in USA. I've never seen one before, thought it was interesting. These are my favorite type of rule for pocket carry.

Also a picked up an Allen Inch Handbook, when flipped over the back side is blue and says Allen Metric Handbook. Published 1979. Has all sorts of info about shcs as well as threads, hex keys, torque values, platings, tap drill sizes, etc. About 200 pgs.

Finally a Carr - Lane Handy Multipliers and Trigonometry Tables for Engineers which has a ton of cool info inside. This book came in a plastic case like a cheap checkbook, it came with all the other charts and tables pictured. There is a Starrett decimal chart, a Lufkin time saver wheel, a neat plastic sliding Allen chart that has info for hex set screws, shcs, and other fasteners.

$2.50 for all

Saw this when browsing for free stuff near me, and it seems as though the price is right, but I am not interested in taking out all that concrete..... Maybe one of you from here would like the job....I mean, it's half of a new building.....

http://mobile.craigslist.org/zip/5132002103.html

Building size is roughly 30' x 60-70 feet. 10' to 13' pitch roof. I plan on building a house where this old building is so you can have for free if you take the concrete with you too. Must go asap 2517519898

Only in geography.... other side of the planet in quality. How depressing was it to see the "c" work on those when you pulled them out?

Depressing would be buying them thinking they were something special. I got these when I bought an old guy's bench top tool holder, along with about two dozen other cheap little hand tools. I paid two dollars for the lot.

No, I'd say it's more of a letdown, after sprinting to the workshop thinking I might have gotten something special for two bucks, only to find a cheap pair of scissors.

Seems like too much effort for eight rusty beams and some sketchy steel trusses. Maybe if you already owned a backhoe, dump truck and a place to dump the concrete, it would be worth it.

I see this often on CL: "Please do several thousand dollars worth of work for me, to get a few hundred dollars worth of stuff for "free" :wtf: (substitute value range as needed...)

Bet he never gets a call, much less a taker.

And in this case you get a "building" (Yeah, right...) but what inspector would sign off on the re-use of that thing?

After walking a local flea market this morning (nothing worth buying today), we stopped at a "barn sale" on the way home... which was really a garage sale in a small barn. Not much to look at, but this old CM radial arm saw caught my eye. I was very tempted given the $20 price tag, but I really did not need it or have the right vehicle to haul it home. I may end up running back over there as it is only about 10 min. from the house :D

Not sure why these came out so blurry... using my wife's phone and I think the flash was turned off.

I think this was my first real garage sale. Tired of paying craigslist prices :) But the place was in complete disarray and more like a hoarder situation. Low on quality tools, likely previously picked by family. All for $25, probably could have gone lower, but I was good with it. Both vice grips are Peterson, Kromedge Craftsman tap and die set complete with case (looks untouched), and dewalt through 1/2 in drill bits, though they are the ones with the goofy tips on them, also a nicely functioning 1/4 proto (despite the appearance) and extension.

On Saturday (8/15/15) hit a few garage sales, but other than a small Stanley #110 block plane, the only other thing of interest that I got was a very small cast iron stove. Made by Auto Stove Works of New Athens, IL and No. 8A.

Just 20 inches tall and the stove top is 20 inches wide.

Not sure if made for coal, wood, display or yard art.

Wife likes it, so need to make room for it.

Mike

Got a box full of ratchet straps, bungee cords, extension cords, and some kid tools, spark plug gap no.164, and mini feeler gauge no.2062, all for free.

I got this also, anyone know what it would of come off of? Way thicker than a license plate, and I feel like I've seen one similar before

Mike, that is a real stove, but I'd be careful with coal, as it does burn hotter. Stoves that size are useful for small areas but most will just use them for decorations these days. If you had a "Tiny Cabin" it would be great on a raised hearth for light cooking even.

That Eprey link is a "Buy it now", and I think somewhat optimistic, but the right stove in front of the right buyer can go for $$.

Also those two stoves, while similar designs, are completely different in detail.

Going rate for flat work demo is $7.00 per square foot... 60x 30x 7=12,600
And that's not counting the piers and footings
repair and repaint the steel$$$

The 110 is a nice lil plane. I just sold one with the original box I picked a couple weeks ago. Sold fast.

Things seemed to have slowed down tools wise in my area. Just been picking up an occasional item here and there at general garage sales and estate sales. I do know that I am liking those moving sales where people are moving long distances and are just trying to get rid of stuff.

Craftsman 3/8" BE ratchet, S-K stubby ratchet, Mac Stubby driver and PS Stubs?needle files. $5
