Well I've been looking for a vintage Craftsman band saw for a long time now. I finally found one close enough to the house at the right price. When I got there, the guy turned the saw on and it made a grinding noise. He popped the case off and determined the top tensioning wheel was hitting the case - an easy fix. When he unplugged it from the extension cord, the plug came apart - another easy fix. The asking price was $50 but I got it for $40. It has a 1/2 horsepower Craftsman crown top motor and an original Craftsman stand. I am happy.

Saw a Clarke Weekend Warrior 48" Workbench Model WB1331-1 up on CL and picked it up yesterday evening.

Item and sellers were great.

Not a garage sale, but scored at the Salvation Army store yesterday. Picked up:

Stack of 3 file drawers, each about 15 inches deep, two drawers each. Two grey and one tan, all were nesting types that hook together, $6 for all of them.

Craftsman "40" magnetic jigsaw, circa 1950 or so. Missing the blade and needs a new cord (original is cracked). Model is 110.27500. Cost $2.00. Can't wait to play with this one....

I rolled by a garage sale with my youngest this past weekend, saw this guy and asked to see it run and for a price.

Ran strong and for $10 how could I pass it up. I do need to get a new Pipe handle for it though. Does anyone know the thread size off the top of their head?

The seller had a nice tool box that they wanted to hang on to for a few more weeks to help organize. Left my name and number and I am saving my pennies for a return trip soon. [emoji106]

I have a jig saw very similar to that which was a gift from my dad when I was pretty little. I wanted to make wood projects like he did on his big equipment so he got me started with the jig saw present and some valuable training.
Great memories created by a great dad. Have fun with it!

Wow what a day. Saw an ad for a bench sander and bandsaw, $50 each. Drove an hour and when I got there I met the seller. His dad, Lt Sobel, a WW II fighter pilot ace, had died earlier in the year. He was a machinist and engineer, and his machine shop was complete...and untouched...and for sale.

I bought everything on the table, box of endmills, palmgren vise, stanley vise, enro vise and a beautiful craftsman xy vise plus other assorted goodies, all for $250. Price includes a large 1940s Craftsman rolling caninet and a single door craftsman cabinet (not pictured).

Then I got this gorgeous craftsman metal lathe, with an OC White shop light, for $125. It included the gorgeous cart it is on.

Next I got this Darra-James 1940s bandsaw, setup for metal or wood (2 speeds ) for $50.

Then there was this 1960s Craftsman 4x36 plus 6" side sander with Leeson power for $50.

On the way home I found ANOTHER Baldor 1 hp grinder with brand new 10" wheels and a custom stand for $100 (not pictured as there was no room in the truck)

What a great day.

That's a lot of S-K goodness (as well as all the rest), and at You **** pricing.

What a great day.

That's almost exactly the sander I want for my shop. What good fortune you had to have a shot at all that equipment (and to have that many greenbacks in your wallet)!

Killer deal ($5) on a 1962 Porter Cable 1/2 sheet sander at the restore today. Got a set of Peterson Vice Grips too, but not worthy of a picture.

Jeremy, That hole hawg will hurt you and very quick. Be sure you have a good grip on it. all it takes is for it to get the drill bit hung up and it will break your wrist or worst. Many of people have been hurt by those. All the new ones now have a clutch in them so if they get hung up it will stop turning the bit, Instead of twisting you around...Best of luck. And yes on the 3/4 inch pipe size...Rich

those things are a fortune new. if it runs, likely you will never need to do anything with it other than use it. even commercially those things will keep running. new plug or cord, maybe some brushes.
10 bucks wont pay the tax on a used one at a pawn shop......
nice find.

That 1960s Craftsman 4x36 plus 6" side sander with Leeson power is an excellent buy, along with other items you got.

Hit just a few yard sales on Thurs (8/13/15) and got items seen in pic 1.

On right is a Samson chisel missing the handle. Above is a 3-1/2 Columbian clamp, Next to clamp is an old 3 lb dumbell hand weight found in old tool box, below it is a "What's It" as looks like a modified clamp that started out being a #39486 by W. & K., next is Petersen 10WR vise grip locking pliers, next is Kraeuter 1801-7 lineman pliers, a 1/4" bar stock that is 14-1/2 long and lastly a Craftsmanm Professional Hearing Protector up to 27 decibels and model #71-36604.

On the "What's It" took some additional pics 2-5 and so if anyone has an idea what it was used for, would appreciate hearing.

Mike

Stewed, Richard, and Stage: Thanks for all the advice and help. I have heard many a horror story about Hole Hawgs and that is why I want the pipe handle. I will be very careful and thanks again for the help.

Joe: The things you find and the prices you find them for nearly always make me weep with jealousy.

Sadly I saw the ad before you told me you were purchasing it and didn't buy it. :(

That's awesome. Are you keeping the stand for the grinder or going to use it for a vise?

I've got a 30 year old scar over my lip from one that caught the edge of a piece of sheetmetal. I forgot to stay back from the handle and leaned into it for "just a second" that sucker whipped around, wacked me upside the head, knocked me off a 6 ft ladder, spun around a few times till it unplugged itself. The boss almost puked when he saw the tip of my tongue sticking through the gash in my lip.
NEVER, EVER, NOT pay attention to what you are doing when using that drill.
Other than that, they are a hell of a good tool.

Yes Joe that is exactly what I mean. There is one of those listed near me as well. In slightly better shape but for $550. It may well be worth that but without selling a few things I actually use I barely have that to spend in a year on tools. [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

Just a couple items bought on 8/14/2015.

Pics 1-3

A waffle iron with long tongs. Probably used over campfire/fireplace. The two waffle plates are attached to a metal strap with pins. Unfortunately, the two pins on one plate broke off. Any suggestions for a good fix?

Pics 4 & 5

Old baseball mitt that is missing some webbing. Think it is a first baseman mitt. Hard to make out the mfg of mitt, but think I see a large "M" in the logo.

It's not something I'd probably use for my yard..nor something I'd spend 60+ for. :wtf: I agree you don't see many, if any mowing crews using them. But then again most of the "pros" in my area are all about one thing...speed. They couldn't care less what the final result looks like. That said, it could fill a niche between a trimmer and a dedicated edger, maybe something to use a couple of times a season. :dunno:

When I was the whacker/edger/blower guy for a buddys lawn service we took the time to do it right and neat. We went fast but always did a professional job. Just me and him and I got paid $15 an hour and he picked me up. We would get 4-5 large lawns done in about 3 hours. Unfortunately for me he started building houses and got out of lawn care.

Well I have been out of town for weeks so I had severe garage sale withdrawal pains!

Planned out some stops, got up late, grabbed the wrong piece of paper on the way out f the house so had to use my phone to look up the stops again LOL.

1st stop was private estate sale, they had started yesterday but I still found a few things. First pic from the bottom Billings wrench, BMC adjustable, Craftsman including a few V sockets, metric 3/8 6 pt sockets from 7 mm to 21 mm and others. Diamalloy pliers, Indestro stubby and socket, Proto chisel, 3 Snap On sockets, USA wire brush for drill, 3 Petersen vise grips and other small tools. Plus aircraft models of a F-16 and a F-5E. $24 total and a buddy is buying the models for $20 for both so I will only be in the tools $4.

2nd, 3rd and 4th stops were professional estate sales and although they had a lot of stuff I didn't find anything.

While eating lunch I checked Craigslist and another yard sale had pooped up with tools.
Picked up lawn chairs and table, 2 folding stadium chairs, Craftsman crow bar, Millers Falls eggbeater drill, bathtub tool I actually need and some plastic crates. From the free pile I got some muriatic acid, glass cleaner, broom, brake fluid, concrete repair and chalk lines. $64 total.

I'd pay $250 for a 130 pound Hay Budden in that shape any day...

I picked this item up at a sale several weeks ago and failed to mention it then. It's not often that one can get excited about a pair of slip-joint pliers as I'm disappointed in most because of my very large hands. This pair is an exception - 10 1/2" long, and vintage USA made - definitely a keeper.

I drove around to a few sales this morning, but nothing that was a MUST GO TO.

I found a few freebies at the first sale. (pic 1)
a Stihl file handle for a chainsaw file.
a lead hose for a pneumatic jack that will be used as the jumper on my compressor once I get it up and running. (minus the valve)

A few sales later I picked up a ladder for $15. (pic 2)
Warner fiberglass 4' type 1 stepladder.

The last stop didn't offer any tools worth buying, but I did pick up a new set of wheels for my mother for $100. (pick 3)
