After a ton of research, careful consideration of options and 2 months of waiting, I finally got my Lista boxes today. I can now officially say, "I have more space than I know what to do with", though I'm sure that won't last...

I also bought a bunch of drawer dividers that I haven't really figured out how I'm going to use just yet:

Before, all my sockets were crammed into one drawer, with the 1/4" sockets spilled over in a second drawer. Now, I have more room than I know what to do with: (I will likely re-organize them -- just wanted to see what they looked like in the drawers)

A huge thank you to Joe from Motorhead Extrodinaire who sold me the cabinets. He helped me dial in the exact configuration I wanted and was a pleasure to work with.

Also, some random thoughts based on my initial impression of the cabinets:
  • The build quality is just as great as everyone on here has always claimed. Very high quality cabinets, casters, rollers, etc. Everything is top of the line. (and it better be, given their cost)
  • I ordered the double-wide cabinets (DW) and am surprised that Lista doesn't seem to sell drawer liners cut to fit. They appear to want you to use 2 liners per drawer, which I find surprising and mildly disappointing.
  • If you buy new, make sure to use Lista's shipping option. It's expensive, but any damage is covered. One of my cabinets arrived with some minor damage and, at least so far, it appears to be a very painless process to get things fixed.

Of course, now I have to figure out how to organize everything. (a nice problem to have) But wow, I love these cabinets!

We hear that all the time but there is a world of difference between a LISTA box and one from Harbor Freight

One is made like a battleship in an American factory with American workers who are feeding and caring for their families. It is also recognized world wide as the best of its class.

The HF toolbox, on the other hand, is also recognized world wide as a piece of Chinese **** that has probably displaced someone you know out of their American job and maybe closed down their American factory. The quality does not even come close to a LISTA.

There are reasons why we will never sell a toolbox that is made in China; American jobs, product quality, human rights. I could go on and on but the bottom line is that we just happen to like America way to much to do otherwise.

IMHO

Lol... HF and SO KRL box are both on saparate leagues from Lista and alike brands. I only have two small Lista boxes but I understand how valuable modular cabinets are when compare to roll-cab styles of HF or SO.

IMO, HF and KRL are made for auto techs, a small niche of tool/material storage cabinets industry. They're not made as stationary cabinets and they're not the best for extreme meticulous material/tool organizing. I don't want to side-track this thread but Lista cabinets are just for a unique need and mindset.

No they do not but we do. We have special education discounts for qualified schools, community education programs, and students.

Tell us about your education, goals, aspirations and what you need in Lista equipment. I can't promise the moon but we will surely see what we can do to help out.

Regards,
Joe

This is not a factual statement. My Lista box is on casters and came that way from the factory. Joe and his team have been helpful to me for several years. The Mac guy thought it was a Mac box as they are owned by the same company. The one drawer opening at a time with their drawer detent are exceptional.

I bought it from their Junk Yard section and the 54" box with 400# drawers and electronic lock cost less than $1500 delivered.

Just my 2 cents.

The last (2) 59" x 30" x 27 Vidmars I picked up on CL were never used, basically new, both for <$525. Two small 33" x 30" x 27" units, $410 each, again basically new units. Lista and Vidmar are basically the same box.

"Could have bought 6 harbor freight and saved money"

In the short run, possibly....
but I actually have some pride in owning Vidmars (used) which could last multiple lifetimes, and provide really high density storage; I am happy with the units every time I open a draw. I do not have to worry about draw breakages, or obtaining obsolete parts as the units are indestructible. I do not need to spend so much time figuring out how I will need to layout the large tools sets I have as the units are very deep, and the drawers come in so many heights. How much weight can the draws take?, I do not have to give it a thought.
Every previous chest I had purchased is not sufficient in at least one dimension. Every previous chest I needed to handle like a baby or damage would occur.
One of my best purchases... tell me, are you as satisfied with your HF units.

But figured it would be long gone in nothing flat. I might just have to rethink my priorities tomorrow, this is too good a deal to pass up.....damn it man!!

I started out with the ever popular HF44 box and it's a great starter box for a homeowner and that was 10yrs ago.

Then I got a set of husky boxes as seen in the first photo and it came from my previous home. I was satisfied with my husky setup (10' workbench +52" roller cabinet) for my last garage but for the new garage, it didn't work out so well, it was too long. So I opted for narrow Vidmar setup (30"+6'+30") which eats into my garage work space but I was able to place the air compressor inline with the cabinets. It's a huge improvement for me in term of organization, no so much of loading capacity bc I only have two drawers that hold all of my air tools.

So it really depends on various criteria from personal need to garage space arrangement. I believe people out can be satisfied with their HF boxes now and many years to come.

I have been looking for a cabinet for my metalworking and welding tools and supplies for about 9 months, not coming up with much I liked. Grabbed this scratch and dent unit from Motorhead Extraordinaire, I think it was the best deal overall. I think it was dropped or involved in a collision. The majority of noticeable damage was 3 drawers were pushed in. I took them out and placed some strategic wood blocks on the floor, and was able to walk them back out with my shoes/body weight pretty darn straight in about 10 mins. I think I dig it. Now that I filled it up and have an idea what I need, I have to order some dividers and partitions from Joe. It's about 48 tall and 56 wide. Sorry for the crappy phone pic, I added a Ram 2500 for scale :).

That's a real nice Lista toolbox. You will really like the stainless steel work top. I've got those in my own shop and they are fantastic.

Some of our Junkyard Specials have blemishes as we carefully describe. Quite often, as you found out, a little bit of work and they are back to perfect. You will like it even better with the right drawer accessories. Let Isabelle or I know if we can help you select the right pieces.

Lista is indeed awesome gear! Unfortunately I do not have pictures, but at my work, there is Lista everywhere....workbenches galore, and they even have Lista for the computer cabinets!

Although that is the one gripe I have with the Lista stuff I have experience with - I am not super tall, just under 6', but even for me the Lista computer cabinet puts the computer screen way too low. I have to either step back or hunch down to have a decent view of the monitor while standing. The other thing is the pull out keyboard drawer - it is the perfect height for me while standing. But, when you pull out the drawer (which works very smoothly btw), when the drawer is all the way out, it slams! down into the "lock open" position. It is just VERY loud, and it took like 2 weeks for me to get used to it to the point where it didn't make me jump, even when I knew it was going to happen, lol.

The workbenches however, are absolutely fabulous!

Is that computer cabinet on wheels? If not, that is basically a SC1350 housing at ~57". Adding 6" casters brings it up 8" to ~65". Would that help?

That drawer latch should not slam. I assume that is a Lock In / Lock Out latch. It will latch when all the way out but just with a click. Is that causing the issue? We can help you change up the latching to something different. Just let me know....

Joe,

What kind of leveling can I get out of a lista setup? My garage floor slopes down pretty well the farther you get from the front. Are there adjustable feet on them?

Maybe I will give you a call tomorrow I am really keen on that orange cabinet you have and maybe another to take the place of my current workbench.

Picked this up from CL end of summer, first pic is from the CL ad, second is from my garage today.
Please ignore the blue tape, hopefully it's temporary, I had the same tool storage lay-out for many years, now I can't remember what drawer I put everything in.:headscrat

We have several options but first how much of a slope are you trying to compensate for?

There are leveling bases, wet clean bases that are adjustable and we have used leveling feet also. Let me know the slope you need to correct for. I'll post the various options later in the day along with some pictures. Just have to pull the info together.

Joe: Do you have any scratch-and-dent SS top for 22" by 28" Lista box?

No we do not have any of those. I was at Lista yesterday and saw some SS tops but I did not inventory them. That size is not very common so I highly doubt that there were any. I'll be there he week after next and I'll look closer.

I've had time to dig up some images to help explain the options...

1) LISTA has a new leveling base that has jacks on the inside. This is not a retrofit situation since it required a cabinet housing design change. We have used this in several installations and it works our real well because you can level all four corners from inside the cabinet. I've attached some pics of tht design.

2) They have a wet-clean base that is 4-1/2' to 6" of elevation. Easy to adjust. There is a small picture of that attached.

3) We have also field modified fork truck bases to install a 1/2" x 2" leveling glide. While I have not use this directly into the base of a cabinet I think you could do that easily enough. This is the cheapest way to solve leveling issues. I've attached picture of a job we installed with a 1-1/2" slope as well as a picture of the base with the glide installed.

Nice looking cabinets. We often marry two cabinets together like that. My own toolbox uses a HS (40-1/4"W) and a ST (28-1/4"W) to make a bigger box. It opens up a lot of options.

Joe,
I forgot to measure it this morning before leaving, luckily I had mentioned it in a post on my garage thread. It slopes down 4 inches over about 35 feet.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=219582

I like the idea of a wet clean base ( I am assuming that is the 4 seperate legs) that way when I hose out the garage, its almost weekly during the winter, it will air dry under it and no rust or anything.

I checked out your shop and can definitely the see big slope. You should able to level about an 8-10' cabinet run.

I've attached a picture of the wet clean bases, one turned in and the other turned out. My dimensions were wrong before they are 6-1/4" to 7-1/4" so you have 1" to play with. One on each corner and a nice open wash out area below. They are stainless steel so no worry about rusting from water.

List $149.42, GJ price $123.27 for a set of four.

They also make a Stainless Steel skirt to hide the opening but personally I don't like it as much as the open bottom.
