Is this the ad?

Plomb_Advert_Veterans_1946.jpg

Here's another pic I ran across that I've not seen before

plomb-visitors-badge-wayne-jpg.952773

That visitors badge is mine. It's the only one I've ever seen, and I paid dearly for it. It's about 4" in diameter. I also have MANY ads, but I've never scanned them.

To qualify this... Technically, there is a way we can be more empirical and precise than 11/46 (the acquisition date), and possibly back it up, if JPD was supplying tools as a subcontractor prior to the acquisition. The adjustable crescent type wrenches that JPD made for Plomb also had the date code. I have had several of them, none earlier than 1948, and irrelevant. I'm assuming that the pliers made for Plomb had the date codes too. It would require a search and/or a poll. From my notes, the earliest date code I have seen - on a 12" Plvmbvaloy, AA, is 12-46.

Lugz, where did you find that JPD was sold in '46? From what I've seen on AA and Twertsy's site, it was January '47.

That being said, I have an 8" Plombaloy adjustable date coded J-12-6, like the examples on AA. I had assumed it was contract made for Plomb before the sale.

I would assume that Lugz was using Twertsy's Plomb timeline posted here on his site.

That is correct.

I would've made the same assumption based on AA's information, Dave. AA's theory that JPD was supplying tools to Plomb prior to Plomb acquiring JPD seems to be based on them dating the acquisition to January 1947. If you back that up to November 1946, which Todd's research shows, it foils that theory, since there are no JPD-made Plomb-marked tools I know of with a date code earlier than 12-46.

Yet another example of AA being mistaken. I have a list. It pains me to see some of them. This one is not so bad, others are far less negligible. I still use it, but more and more with extreme care. It's a little like circumnavigating the globe in 2017 with a map drawn in 1491.

'Zackly! The problem is that I run into people that still quote AA, bible and verse. My last attempt to update AA was my wartime Pebble Plomb expose and Plomb No. 18, 19, 19-A, and 19-R catalog dating analysis. I have now given up. Being wrong is excusable, especially in this hobby, when so much depends on references. Being wrong when one refuses to accept and consider references one doesn't personally own, or substantiated research and analysis one has not personally conducted, is inexcusable.

Someone was rtalking about an extension they found that seemed to have a copper plating on it... was that in this thread?
I don't know, but Bethlehem Spark Plug Co. used copper plating on hex drive socket drive tools in the antique era. Otherwise, I would suspect either BeCu, or patina. I have a number of tools that look coppery. Something about 1940's Williams-era steel in particular seems to go coppery. Whatcha got?

ALL: speaking of BECU please don't hit that with a grinder or wire wheel cause the dust is TOXIC and maybe a reason i lost a few friends to CANCER over the years. yep they made golf clubs out of BECU and some of the better players would grind the edges on their wedges and irons to play better.

love the discussions going on in this thread so keep up the good work guys!!

Here is an early DBE wrench that I found today at an estate sale in Incline Village, NV. Does anybody have any thoughts on this wrench? The markings seem a little odd to me and the wrench seems quite early.

I was reading in a PLOMB catalog and noticed a section of Copper plated wrenches, for non sparking applications. Never seen one. But they are in the catalog.... SO figured its same with the extension. I have some Ampco breaker wrenches and even an adjustable wrench all made with brass I believe

Ampco makes sense, and Berylco. I can't recall seeing any socket sets in safety compositions (copper, brass, BeCu, etc) from any of the major mid-century mfgrs, but that could definitely just be a blind spot for me.

Calking irons (specifically yarning irons)
A lot of people mistake them for chisels.
Used to joint hubed cast iron pipe.
Thanks I have heard of the term yarning but never knew the purpose.

Picked up a Plomb 5449 1/2 ratchet last weekend. It has a drive plug, I dont find a pic of a 5449 that shows a plug.
I figured with all the pics I would see one missing the plug.
So... is this common or not. Looks like date code = oE

Here is my 14-3/4 yarning iron. I never got around to looking it up. I'm glad to finally know what it was made for. I think I may have one in Proto too.

If I recall correctly, it is a plumbing tool used for removing the packing out of faucet handles or out of car water pumps... Made for back when things where serviced not just replaced! That is such a killer haul mooreag47! I have been looking for one of those pullers! I found a bunch of plomb and p&c and will post pictures later!
