I really like the shelves with the cans on them! Looks cool. The new building is coming together nicely. Are you heating it for the winter?

Thanks for checking out the shop. No major heating for this winter. I do have an industrial type 220V heater that I'll likely use for spot warming but at my pace the goal for this year was to get the building built and then clean up and transfer all my tools, cabinets and stuff from my house garage for winter storage and start getting set up for use next spring. The building is not insulated and would "leak" enough air that would make it very hard to heat right now. Maybe in he future I can make it more cozy for winter work.

Wow, your new garage is coming along. It also seems to be filing quickly. LOL.

Oh ya it's filling up al right. First there's the stuff I remember having saved for this place that I've been tripping over the last few years and then there's all the stuff I saved for this and had squirreled away and forgotten about. SHEESH! I may have to thin the herd a bit before I'm done.

Ah the life of a "collector". :dunno:

Thanks for stopping in to see my progress Steve. It's a dream come true for me to finally have a separate building just for tools and projects. I am blessed.

Surprise Mail !!!

Got a nice little surprise in the mail the other day from Florida. A very nice little vintage Ford branded DOE wrench. Many thanks to Gerard (taumac) for this gift and thinking of me. I will find an appropriate use for this on the Roadster.

Thank you very much friend.

I've just caught up on the last couple of pages of your thread, and the new garage looks a treat. You're making me very envious.

Now you'll have to post a photo or 3 of how the house garage is looking with all this stuff out of it..... :dunno:

Can you put the cars in there yet? :3gears:

Thanks for the comments Lyndon and I had not thought about showing the state of the house garage until you asked. No cars in there yet except for my roadster which has a space but really the rest of that garage still looks a mess. True that I've moved a number of things out of there slowly but then I keep bringing in projects to clean or paint for the new garage. For example I've had a multi drawer cabinet all blown apart in there this past week while I sand and paint it. There were loose drawers everywhere until just yesterday. I'll get some pictures of that exercise posted. I guess I'll have to start showing the emptying progress soon in the house garage.

Thanks for stopping by.

Last weekend I got some additional items moved and hung up in the new garage. I'm trying to avoid taking an existing loose item from one garage and just depositing it in the other so, if I have something worthwhile to move and it needs to be hung up or put away I'm trying to follow through on that to completion as much as possible.

I figured it was past time to have a working fire extinguisher down there so I moved one from the house garage and put some blocking in-between the garage door posts to mount it with and for sure it needs an official sign above it right? That got a spot made for it too.
attachment.php

I also found some suitable bolts and drilled my heavy butcher block table top to mount the english wheel. I'm excited to give this a home and maybe take some time soon to experiment with some sheet metal.
And you see the sand blast cabinet underneath so my plan execution is not perfect as that does not have a final resting place yet.
attachment.php

For fun I mounted an old lighted exit sign over the service door but that may get raised higher to be more visible with the garage door open.
attachment.php

And part of last weekend involved a little art project. I've had this old tailgate for some time with intentions of doing some lettering and practice painting on it. I'd love to learn sign painting and pin striping but have to admit I'm not very good at it. I guess that's a good thing as it prevents the long lineup at my door of people wanting painted signs and, I have too many other projects anyway. But it was fun to try and be creative beyond drilling a hole, shooting a wood screw or turning a wrench.

One of my bigger clean up projects that started last weekend and carried all through this week to conclusion yesterday was to clean, sand and paint this 7 drawer cabinet. It's a pretty old unit from General Fireproofing and built like a tank. I've thought about selling it a number of times but it's very close to the strength and quality of the Lyon cabinet I also have. I figured this would make a great central storage unit for fasteners of all types. Lot of sturdy drawers and lots of storage space so hopefully I only have one place to go for all of my typical garage fasteners.
It was pretty rough on the outside and the tracks needed a good cleaning and oiling.
attachment.php

attachment.php

I started by removing a glued on piece of particle board from the one side, removed all the drawers and gave everything a good scrubbing with simple green. Then started sanding all the flat surfaces to remove surface rust, loose paint and other splatter from years of prior use.
attachment.php

At first I was going to keep it simple and just paint it black again because I had some available. But the original color was industrial gray and that would match to my other Lyon cabinet so color change it was back closer to original. All the bare metal spots got a coat of rust preventative and then it took two coats of Rustoleum gray enamel to cover the sides and the drawer fronts. I've had loose drawers scattered all over the house garage all week as I would paint a few at a time and then find safe drying spots for them to stand. It finally got put back together yesterday and moved down to the new building next to it's cousin. It also got a new stainless steel top. This was from a previous CL purchase and just needed a little trimming and some Gorilla Glue gel. The top is a little wider than the cabinet but had such a nice formed edge that I could not cut it up any further and will just benefit from a little wider work surface.
I've started to stock it with nuts, bolts, screws and nails. Now as I transfer other loose containers of fasteners down to the shop I have a ready made place to put them away and be organized.

Garage move update…

Up till now I've been moving things that were not part of daily used tools in the house garage. But the point of no return has come and I decided to move one of my roller cabinets containing many frequently used hand tools. The Waterloo cabinet with a hang on side cabinet has been in one corner of the house garage for years now so it needed a good cleaning. I took out every drawer and laid them on my little yard trailer for transport. Then gave the cabinet a good washing inside and out getting rid of all dirt and dust and a few dead bugs as well.

Rolled it down to the garage by hand through the back yard. Empty of drawers it was much easier to handle. Then I transported the drawers via my 4-wheeler and trailer and gave each drawer a good wipe down before reinserting them. It took a lot of time but nice to know its moved and clean. One of the future jobs will be to reorganize the drawer contents to be more useful.
attachment.php

The other Craftsman roller box is just storing motorcycle parts and a few tool items right now but that will get reorganized as well.

The next item moved in place is a nice steel cabinet book shelve unit. It is becoming my auto/motorcycle library for all repair manuals and literature. I especially saved this one for my use because it has the front sliding doors that can be closed up and keep everything neat and clean inside. The top is decorated with a couple vintage engine analyzers and that universal beer-o'clock thing. Gotta tell time when I get lost in a project someday.
attachment.php

Also cut the new grass for the first time this weekend. It's filling in fairly good on all sides and we just had good rain finally this weekend. Temps are still warm so it should perk up and get a good growth before winter finally comes.

Still gotta hang that tailgate later this week!! Lots to do. :eyecrazy:

That cabinet restore came up great. Perfect use for fasteners. I can see the effort that went into that

Just had an idea - could you mount the tailgate so it flipped down and became and extra work bench ?

Thank GB that's a good idea and one I had not thought of. That's what I love about GJ!
I'll have to do some thinking on that and see if there is a wall section that's open at a low enough level to allow it to fold down and be the right height. I had only intended it to be a visual effect but possibly in can be dual purpose.

Haha,
I'm tracking with you 100% Strouty. The gun and the ammunition are at the ready as soon as I decide what goes in each drawer. Then I'll spend some quality time with the label maker.

Making slow progress with the move of big items from one garage to another.

The house garage is getting a little more bare each day. This is where my main work bench used to reside.
attachment.php

And here is it's new home in the new garage. I'm setting up the north wall as the working side for work bench, machines like grinders and drill press will go along this wall when everything is arranged. I think this is approximately where the bench will stay.
attachment.php

And it was time to introduce the roadster to its new home finally. For now it will park in the south bay until I'm done working on the north side bay then it moves over there for winter so I can store one or two other vehicle projects on the south side. This now leaves lots of room in the house garage for my Mustang, Sportster and will also provide easy access parking for the winter tools like the snow blower, etc.

Lookin' on

Nice roadster!

Thanks for the comments guys and for looking in on my garage adventure.

Dangerous thing to get your self caught up in the cleaning mode. Now that I'm wound up to strip the house garage and clean everything that comes out or stays nothing is sacred and everything becomes fair game.
Maybe this is a little out of the ordinary but I started looking at my various gas cans and old oil storage cans and realized how filthy they had become so out came the Simple Green and scrub brush and even these things can look better.

Lol, RM I thought I was the only one that kept the tops of containers clean. Can't stand the oil crud that get on them.

You'll have to do some black and white pics of the roadster when you finish getting sorted, I think they will look cool in the new garage.

Cheers GB

Well I can't guarantee it won't be another 10 years before I clean them again but right now I'm in the mood to have things cleaned up and not oily/dirty.
I agree that little things like that bug me too.

Hmmmmm. Black and white pics eh…. interesting idea.

I continue to make steady progress at moving and setting up in the new garage. Unfortunately with work and other obligations during the week I only get small jobs done and try to get some major items accomplished on the weekend. And course that time on weekends also has to compete with yard work and other house chores.
This weekend I managed to get some larger items moved like my welding table, my drill press and a tall storage cabinet got emptied, washed and moved to the new garage.
All that with giving part of the house siding a wash while the weather is still warm enough to run the pressure washer and mowing the lawn one more time. Hopefully for the last time this year as it's getting colder so I expect the grass to stop growing.
Hopefully these pics will show that the new garage is getting filled and the house garage is becoming more and more empty.

Look, room to park a car now with plenty of walk around space and a corner to store the Harley.
attachment.php

I also did a little outside decorating by putting in a pad to move my Marathon gas pump over to a new home next to the man door of the new garage.

Hot find at HD.

I was at Homer's Depot the other day and of course I just have to stroll down the tool isle to see of there is anything I "need".
I came across this Milwaukee drill bit set on sale for $15! It's rated for metal cutting and has bits up to 1/2 inch diameter and best of all the shanks are hex to fit in an impact drill or tighten up securely in any cordless drill.
I think this will be a much better set than the comparable HF set I recently bought for $13.

Always love me some new tools.

Garage Decorations

I found a couple new signs this past week listed for sale on CL. The first is a 7 foot long Ford Motorcraft dealer sign. Gave it a good Simple Green bath and bought some aluminum channel edging for it to trim out the edges. It's wood base with a thick vinyl graphic applied.

attachment.php

Then yesterday I picked up this Napa store sign that's 40" x 40" square. It's a metal sign that's painted and pretty thin sheet stock so I'll likely make a simple frame for it to add some stiffness before hanging up in the garage.

Continuing the Theme

Continuing the Ford/Motorcraft theme I found these great parts cabinets advertised on Craig's List locally and bought two sets. The top cabinet nests into the bottom roller and they will work perfectly for me. I don't want a bunch of permanently placed cabinets in the new garage. I prefer to be able to roll things around as needed to make the work space more flexible. These fit the bill for that purpose, provide good storage and definitely work in my Ford themed space.

I went exploring inside an antique flea market place last night after work. I've never been in this one and finally decided to hit it on the way home. Lots of craft minutia but there were a few good merchants with tools or garage related items. I did manage to find a couple items of interest.

Speed limit sign to hang up after a slight improvement modification.
attachment.php

And this old Sun dwell meter. I've always wanted an example of a vintage piece of Sun equipment but the big stands are always more than I can spend whenever I see them. So this little guy is perfect to keep company with my Snap-On and Craftsman versions.

A Rocket??? No one has a rocket in their garage!!!

The new shed is filling up nicely with your new found treasures.
I really like your ford theme and the red cabinets will add great color too.

It's funny how the old stuff just pulls us in and emptys our pockets!!!

Great job

Don, you got that statement right and thanks for the compliments. I still have organizing to do but it's 99% all in there so that goal is accomplished. Had my electrician out on Saturday to size up the job if installing permanent power so I hope to get that done before winter really sets in here. Then I can really put things on a more permanent location for future use.
