It did come out looking like new.

Soft wire wheel on the bench grinder and a bath in Marvel Mystery Oil.

just curious which mystery oil product you used and did you put it in a small can or container? grinder's wire wheel before or after? they hardly look like the same tools. very nice:thumbup:

I picked up a flexible machine light at a indoor FM yesterday. It's too cold in the Northeast for outdoor FM's right now.

I replaced the cord, painted the inside of the head bright white and bought/modified the switch "nubby" (which was missing). Standard switch threads are 4-28 and this has a 6-28 so I drilled/tapped a 4-28 "nubby" into a 6-28 "nubby".

I didn't had a 6-28 tap/die so that cost more than the repair parts. Hell - it cost more than I paid for the light!

I need to figure our what I'm going to mount in to. Thinking bandsaw via a magnetic base. Making that will be my next little project . . .

I didn't have a lighting addiction until I started hanging around here.

Cheers

Jim

It was packed and everytime i went to grab something someone else grabbed it when my hand was just an inch away......:headscrat

Missed a carry toolbox full of sockets and rachets that looked to be craftsman and SO, it was $15 and I was trying to get to it and when my hand was by it, gone it went!!!

I swear it was like someone was watching me and grabbing anything i went for before I got it.

I will post pictures in a little bit, right now just got done with lunch and sitting in the chair for a few minutes. :bounce:

Vintage Craftsman 1/4" set bought Friday for $2. Included was a bonus Snappy MGMM10 magnetic socket.

Before and after cleanup pics:
Nice! That deserves a "Two Dolla Holla!" Came out beautiful.

Over the years I've found a lot of people have given the name "Tools" to all kinds of stuff.
I can relate to that post too. Stood in line years ago at a sale for the " lots of tools" advertised. Was one of the first customers in the door and there was literally a card table with one craftsman chisel, one small garden shovel, one ancient hex socket driver with no sockets, and I believe one allen wrench also. I immediately questioned the workers and they said "Oh, the family decided to remove the tools from the sale." Thanks for wasting my morning and gas. They did give me the chisel for $1 instead of $3 because I was so disgusted.

Just a small £6 haul today:

Nice find on the MAC in the UK. How much does 20 pence work out to?

£1 = $1.64
20p = 33cents

I keep my eyes out for USA tools as obviously they are a bit rarer in the UK.
Snap On is the most common but carries a ridiculous premium, I lucked on a couple of spanners buried in an auction lot, but single pieces at sales are always marked way up!
Proto, Mac, Plomb, etc are pretty damn rare.

Very nice. 33 cents, that's what I saw but I didn't think it was right. The Proto Plomb Mac stuff is pretty common by me. Funny though I'd like to find more cool older British made stuff. I don't see much of that at all. I've managed to find a few nice pieces.

First I cleaned/soaked them in dish soap and water; buffed with the wire wheel; then soaked for a while in a little tub of the regular MMO "Add to Gas & Oil" stuff. I just started using gun-cleaning brushes chucked into my cordless drill to clean the insides of the sockets. The phosphor bronze brushes are too soft - need to get some more aggressive brushes. Thanks. :)

How did you clean it up that nice??? The chrome looks really nice, it looks almost brand new!

Thanks! :)

If I'm not mistaken, those are not chromed.

Plain steel, I believe.

One is a Elvis that I'll probably give to my mom, and the other is a fishing elf that suppose to rise and lower a ornament in the end of the fishing pole.

Either way here is the other stuff from Saturday.

Garfield mug, a Dikta? hurricane lantern, bailing wire, solder stuff, snap on ratchet wrench, some Husky 1/2" drive tools, some random wrenches, fixed blade utility knife, speaker wires, needle nose vise grip pliers, C-Clamp, the hammer has Mac on the head and Snap On on the handle.

I can so relate to this. In our Metro Detroit area I have to contend with guys like Rickster,ShadowRulez ,FrankLee along with a full time job that starts at 7 am and still try to find a tool bargain every now and then. I love going to sales when half the items are sold at sunrise not at the listed opening 3 hours later, and I still have to wait in line to be disappointed.

Yep, I still have my 7-5or6 job to work every weekday. But the weekend I usually have free so I try to go to one or two garage sales here.

Problem is most good garage sales are 20-30miles away which isn't bad really but would be nice to be closer.

Don't group me with Rickster, he's in a league of his own. Half the sales I get to he's already cleaned out

I usually take an early lunch and only hit up sales in a fifteen minute radius. I've only ever managed to hit one sale when it opened on a Saturday. Haven't managed to get out at all so far this year.

Was driving down the street yesterday when I saw a "Tool Sale" sign. Took a quick look as I drove by and saw a band saw. Since I need one occaisionally, I turned around and stopped. He had a 14-inch Harbor Freight saw that looked hardly used and was asking $175 for it. I asked if he would take $150 and he at first said "Nope" but then asked if I would flip for it. Sure, I handed him a quarter, he said call and flipped it. I won and got it for the $150. The saw lists on the HF site for $354 and yes it's not a "top of the line" band saw, but I don't need one for daily use.

Only thing he didn't have was the manual but I found that on HF.com

Stumbled upon my first garage sale of the year, snow on the ground. Old craftsman combo square good vial and a pair of waldes internal bent nose snap ring. Ironically all of my snap ring pliers have been purchased used. They are all waldes and that was not from selection on my part.

That cart is awesome:thumbup:!! Let's see some more pics of it with the drawers open.

It took a while to trick my camera to use flash when it thought there was enough light. But these might do the job. The picture of a single drawer shows the the dual locks on it. I don't have the key for the drawers but they can also take a padlock, so that is what I may use, if I need to ever lock them.

Craptain that cabinet will outlast even the youngest here on GJ. nice find and whether you paint it or not is should do the job of holding your tools and providing a nice work surface if you need one.:thumbup::thumbup:

that's a nice option for the padlock or a good locksmith can probably make you a key, but it looks like maybe a home use so you probably never need to explore those options. I never lock my boxes, but when buying them I like if the key is with the box in case I ever need to sell it.

Well we had upper 50's temps today and nasty weather moving in tonight so I figured it was time to hit my favorite salvage yard while I had the day off. Sure am glad I made the trip. Here's what I drug home. First thing I found was a Craftsman 100 table saw that was missing the motor and someone cut a hole in the cast iron table but its got some good parts. Then I found a Wilton bullet vise laying in the mud amongst a lot of other stuff. Its got issues but hopefully it can be fixed. Its nice and smooth and seems to have very little slop.

Yep I hope I can fix the jaws, never worked on a vise before.

I think that might be too much of a challenge even for the best of the vise repair guys and for your first I would set it aside and find something a little less challenging. i'm not sure you can make that a good vise again without a lot of machining or welding. if you have that talent then you have at it.

it looks like its a pretty big Wilton. is it 5 inches across the top of the jaws? just an FYI the swivel base, pipe jaws, handle with screw and the little horseshoe piece and maybe the dust cover are parts that you or somebody else might need on their Wilton. if it is a 5 inch or bigger those parts alone might get you $50 from the right person or persons.

good luck

Not exactly a garage sale, but I picked these up at my local Habitat Restore. Usually their tool selection is store brand stuff at pretty high prices. I thought $16 for a brand new 6 pc set of Wera's was a pretty good deal.

Sure, I will get some for you when I get done with work.

Here are some pics. Hope this helps. I think it is maybe a box from the 40's but you guys will know. It has a wrinkle finish that is green. I just like it because it is old and had a cool logo.

smokeshow69,
I don't think that valve spring compressor is for a particular engine. I've seen them with several manufacturer's names on them. Likely that Lisle, Zim, or KD made them and sold them to all the other tool companies (I found 2 last summer-one unbranded, the other a Vlchek).

Outlaw,
Yes, I'm interested in the PK!
