Ok. I waited in the cold this morning [ 5 degrees ] The add said workshop tools in the basement and tools in the garage. Well there was nothing there except a lot of low grade Chinese stuff. But under a bunch of rags I found this Erie vise still bolted to the bench. Not a great deal [$10 ] but I wanted something to show for standing in the cold.

Nice little vise you have there. Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Forest Green is a good match for the original paint on that vise if you plan on refinishing it.

Some pretty good finds for the slow season guys! you are doing better than me! It's still pretty bad here. but I did make it out the door... 4 planed stops, but two were DOA. the HS flea was not on today. no clue why, and one of the yard sales. my first (unplanned) stop did get me this however:

For $5 A NOS RainBird Water gauge, A brass repair fitting, 15 Single Edge razor blades, 3-1/2" drill wire wheel (Germany), a NOS Lantern Fluorescent tube (spare for one of the camp lanterns..) and not shown, a NOS Candle glass in a translucent Cobalt Blue for SWMBO;

attachment.php

A Lamp bail as I needed a short one for an antique floor stand lamp restore project, and this patina will match closer than a new one...; 3 diamond nail files that will land in various handy places, mostly not for fingernails, a set of knife edge tweezers, a tiny tripod for my day or fanny packs, and again not shown, a dozen or so Votive candles. Two bucks.

Found a good (but sad) garage sale today in Berkeley; a widow selling off her husband's tools. She sensibly had a knowledgable "low ball insurance" friend there to set fair prices on things, so I spent $180 in total, but I still ended up with some nice stuff.

It was a struggle, but I left a lot of Proto and Plvmb sockets and wrenches there. I was quite pleased with my self control.

The entire haul:

Plvmb mallet:

Brown & Sharpe:

Bits:

Proto level:

Plvmb 1/4" ratchet set:

Some adorable little Williams wrenches:

A Proto 4011 puller:

Plvmb wrenches:

Starrett and Union Tool Co. picks:

Proto and Plvmb pry bars:

Three Starrett, one Brown & Sharpe, and one Craftsman guages:

Starrett caliper:

An empty Plvmb box:

K-D reversible ratcheting box wrenches:

Some small Williams and Billings wrenches:

A Proto screwdriver, some misc pointy things, and a punch:

A 10" long Plvmb punch:

A Plvmb puller:

A 12" set of Starrett gauges, a 9" set of Mac gauges, and a misc ruler:

Three Proto screwdrivers, two Stanley Hurwoods, one Plvmb, and one unknown screwdriver:

Went to an auction today and got a few decent deals on some tools and other shop items. I paid 3 bucks per flat on these tools, probably 80 percent of them are Chinese, Taiwan or other out of state manufacture but there were a few proto wrenches, a craftsman or two, several Williams, PM and Stanley. Got the Milwaukee Hole Saw kit for 10 bucks complete, and the aluminum cart for 20 bucks. Gave a buck for the little oak box, I'm a sucker for quarter sawn oak stuff, and a whopping 25 dollars for the Snap-On cabinet.

Looks like everyone is off to a good start in the new year!

Hit my first estate sale today, late by about 20 min. and man was it crowded. The only one advertised near here and 20 odd miles away in Bellingham, the largest city near us. And it was being stripped of everything. Still, I think it was worth the drive.

Globe Master NC tap and die set. Unused but missing the die wrench (have spares). $3.00. $3.97 in 1968.
P&C 6" adjustable $1.
Unknown mfg and best built old, old, line mans pliers I've found $1.
Miller Falls chisel set $3. It's like a high end version of the ones China copies now. Someone wrote "Carving Tool Set" below the label on the lid that states "Carving Tool Set". There is something to be said about clarity. It avoids confusion.
Tiny all metal organizer box full of unorganized misc $5. It measures H6" W5.5" D8". Found a 1956 Oregon State mini license plate key ring fob in one of the trays from the Disabled Vets foundation plus a 1/8 NF die and a couple of Cman sockets.

A modest start for the year and didn't break the bank.

Beatcad,
you got a Kennedy and a Gert full of tools and I got their cousins the old wood craftsman and a Waterloo without any tools. i'm also looking forward to seeing what you find in your boxes even if you just take pics with the drawers open.

here's the wood Craftsman and the Waterloo with the slides that somebody wanted to check out. also the missing pictures of my 1/3 HP craftsman block grinder with a stand.

Cast iron, nice score! That looks like a Griswold waffle iron for over an open burner on a wood range.
You wouldn't think it, but I dropped a kettle similar to the ones you have a couple of years ago that belonged to my grandmother. It ran a crack down the side of it and almost split in two. My mother in law uses it as a planter now.

Everyone that found an oak machinist box: you ****.

Those Plumb and Proto "prybars" are....Brake spoons..

Are they? I found a set that looked very, very similar a year or so back. Searching the part number turned up that they were a particular kind of plumber's pry bars or chisels-the name escapes me at the moment. I traded them to another member, otherwise i'd dig them up and take a look.

...Never mind, I believe I was thinking of calking chisels, which appear to be a different animal altogether.

Another Craigslist purchase and with the help of one of our wiser members I finally pulled the trigger on a Peter Wright Anvil that weighs about 150 pounds. I can't see the # in the middle to say exactly how much it weighs, but it sings like a bird when I hit it with a little sledge. with the England patent it is 1880 to early 1900's is about all I know other than it came out of a barn on a farm in the country.

Now to find the cedar stump at the mill to mount it on.

i'm willing to hear comments on value or condition if you care to offer or just enjoy my new Anvil ****.

What are you going to use the anvil for? It looks decent, kinda pitted, hard to tell, no real good pics of the top.

The Anvil was less expensive than 150 pound dumbbell so i'll use it for exercise until I find an old cedar stump to mount it on. then i'm going to design and build pieces of gym equipment that you can buy and you don't have to use to stay in shape.

I did take an old square to check it out and it was very straight from front to back and side to side in front of the hardy hole. a little rounded back by the hardy holes. it does have some rough edges and i'm guessing the past owners beat on it with cold steel pieces instead of hot ones. I have a couple old RR track pieces for that. a couple pits in the middle of the face, but honestly I haven't seen too many better old anvils to have a choice and I didn't want to buy a new one.

Awesome anvil, Drivesitfar! I too have an old Peter Wright, which was handed down to me from my dad. As you may know, Peter Wrights are among the most desirable of all anvils, and yours looks great to me.

Congrats!

Oh! I've never heard of a brake spoon. I'll google it, thank you. (I could use them as small pry bars though, yes?)

Confirmed brake spoon or brake adjusting tool for drum brakes

These were technically purchased in 2013. But, the brake was finished in 2014. So, hope it still counts. Both purchased seperately from CL. Definately not on the "you ****" list. But both are not available often. So I thought I did well.

The Niagra I paid $350 for and just cleaned it up and re-painted. Made in 1948No before pics.

The Dies & Krump Brake was $250 and made in 1926. Had to weld a V shaped crack and fabricate a broken off ear. Pics show after the weld with a little epoxy to smooth out.

Both painted to match my Snap-On boxes and cart.

Scored these off cl last night for $250 for all of them (asking price)! They were listed under "furniture".

Wow, just wow. The smallest of those would retail for more than you paid. You'll have the safest garage in the neighborhood!

The comedy of it is I don't have remotely that much flammable stuff, but the matching cabinets deal is something I didn't think I would be able to financially justify.....so if my wrenches spontaneously combust, I'm good :)

You have quite a variety now and some I've never seen before. even if you only need one you can probably find willing buyers for the others and make a little or maybe get the one free.

I know how heavy the big one is because I had to load and unload one myself last year so i'm guessing you got your workout just picking them up and setting them in your garage.

Nice haul.

More craigslist than garage sales but I view cl as the modern day garage sale. Snap on side cabinet with drawers

Craftsmen side cabinet this one got for a steal at 25 bucks.
Pipe vise and threader set, record vise. No name threader set will work for what I need.
