Stopped at 2 garage sales today - first was a bust, there were some tools and a couple ammo cans there, but the prices WOW!! $3 a tool and socket, a lot of the prices on stuff was above retail for NEW things. I can't understand some people, they think their stuff is gold plated. 2nd sale was better, snagged the following items, all for $5

pic 1:
large 7/8" drill bit, 50 cents
small asst. of Craftsman ignition wrenches, all for 50 cents
Simplex No. 15 early slip wrench, very cool!, $1

pic 2:
closeup of the Simplex slip wrench, going in my collection of old oddities...

pic 3:
pair of Proto 3/8-drive flex drivers, 50 cents each
Wright 3/4-drive socket, $1
Proto 1/2-drive impact socket, $1

I went to a couple of sales this morning that had "tools" listed in their ad.

efe3480ec29d7cb11e730c9e4962d1b9_zpsd4fa6ad0.jpg

First one was kind of a bust. I had seen a large Parker vise on a bench in an online photo. It had a Post-it note on it that read, "Vintage Parker Vise". There was no price. In the other photos some pictures showed prices on items and they were very reasonable. Today was the second day of the sale. When I showed up the Parker was still there!:bounce: but it was priced at $200!:shocking: I was too polite to ask him where he came up with that number and simply bought some giant files for $1 each and an old Craftsman torque wrench for $5.

At the second sale there was better stuff. I bought three pre-war automotive jacks (because they look cool), for $5 each, an old milk can because I knew someone looking for one, and some big old wrenches. I also scored this sweet old military helmet for a fiver. (The mannequin I already had:eek:) After doing a little research I found out that it was a 1953 British military helmet.

9d4e644d794a3f7ae5c4c0a61152145e_zps972b1842.jpg

I hit a couple more sales in the afternoon. At one I found the little Dunlop vise for $3. It was an estate sale and they also had an old Heritage era Craftsman wall cabinet. As I was looking at it I managed to knock over a cabinet of small bolts, washers, nuts and other miscellaneous hardware. Probably 5000 items suddenly crashed to the ground and made an amazing racket! Turns out the cabinet WAS NOT for sale.:(

Lastly I picked up the vintage bowling ball, case, stand and pin for $5.

And if ANYONE reading this knows ANYTHING about this cabinet I picked up on Thursday PLEASE respond on my thread attempting to identify it!:)

Link to that thread...

Just looked a bit more closely at my Craftsman scratch awl, it has a circle F manufacturer mark. Does anyone have info on this? Alloy Artifacts just says unknown.

No chance for seeking out garage sales but while out for groceries I did hit a couple resale shops.
First was the local Salvation Army store and found this nice little single drawer Cole Steel card file cabinet. It's a mate to another two drawer version I already have. $7.99
small cab.jpg
And a couple complete model car kits. Ford race cars of course. $3.99 each
models.jpg

Cruised past the Habitat store but too late as it was closed.

Next resale shop always gets in used tools and they are not too expensive for retail pricing. Digging thru the socket bin I did manage to find these 6 SK sockets for $1 each. 1/2" drive and while not in the best cosmetic shape they are usable and a start to filling my SK tool box bought last week. Some day I hope to have complete 1/2 and 3/8 sockets sets in that box.

I certainly see some tremendous results from garage sales on this thread! I don't have anything quite that spectacular to report although my wife and I did go to a nearby small towm, Stirling City, CA; pap 295 I think; for their annual town garage sale. Not too many participated although at the Stirling City Museum we saw a super detailed model of the Stirling City Diamond Match Co. Lumber Mill; all to HO scale. Took years to make and is quite special. We also saw a D7 with an Arch in the yard. I believe to start the D7 you first started a small gas motor to spin the bid Diesel!
At Stirling City I picked up a nice long gun case $10 (not pictured as this is not a gun site) and a Miller Falls electric Impact Wrench, 1/2" drive for $5. I had not realized that Ingersol Rand took over Millers Falls in about 1962. I would love to know more about this piece.
In Paradise I got some more stuff; something I really needed, believe it or not; a small magnet! Priced at $5 with other items, jumper cables, small side cutters, a stainless measuring stick, a 25mm Craftsman 1/2" drive socket and a real tight spot oiler! Or maybe it was $6 for all that including a strange Bonney swiveling socket which I will have to post photos of separately; did not take it with the others.
I also got a decent sized 3 jaw puller, no name so maybe it's Chinese or something; who knows? One of those "someday maybe I'll need it" tools.

Seriously only $30??? What the heck. As a serious mopar guy I wonder what NOS was left behind at that sale?? Any '71 Duster NOS?? Your score is one of the best suckages of the summer due to the volume of NOS tools and parts. Major vacuum status.

Been a very long time since I've been able to get to a decent sale.
Saw an ad on Gumtree for 2 xNorbar torque wrenches (British made) for £10 :)
View media item 42377
Then stopped at a car boot sale and picked up 3 x Ideal (West Germany) C-clamps for £3 an a weird unmarked "wedge" adjustable wrench £1.
Anyone seen one before?

Pics? there are a lot of different camp heaters out there...

There sure are, I'd never seen one of these before but it looks like Coleman made a bunch of them. Evidently mine is a model 511a:

url

(hope the above image shows up, I'm a noob to this)

I followed the instructions on the fuel tank and managed to get it going without blowing myself up. It puts out a decent amount of heat but it takes a looong time to get going (30-40 minutes). It looks like the catalyst matting is pretty grungy but I'm reluctant to take it apart to try and clean it, this thing was made in the 60's so who knows what sort of nasty stuff they made the catalyst out of.

Edit: D'oh, no picture, I'll have to play with it some more later...

After seeing smoke's post I didn't even want to write. Damn that was a deal and a half. I found a few Craftsman items at an estate sale and was happy to part with a few bucks for it. The hunt is the best part anyway. And I'm always happy to relieve someone of their burdensome extra tools . . .

Funny thing, I was fixing to head to church and I saw the neighbor was having a estate sale across from my house. I knew the guy that passed so it was kind of strange to be in his house the first time after he had passed.

I will have to take pictures later as now I'm staying home and that means work in the garage and try to clean it up!

Outlaw, You know that tool box that you and someone else had that looked homemade but ya'lls look identical? Well I think i found their bigger brothers cause there was one there with a lift out tray in it but no marking or anything. I almost got it but I just couldn't bring myself to bring home another carry box.

DON"T clean the catalytic mat, you will destroy it. So this one is white gas fueled? I'm usually seeing the Prop powered ones. is this the one wit ha dome shaped element, about a foot or so across pointing straight up?

Madison: you mean this toolbox? still a mystery as to who made it.:dunno:

Outlaw: that "free" toolbox looks like the one you had shipped across the country a few months ago. very nice and one of my favorite Craftsman logos.

Oval: have fun organizing all the stuff new in the packages. did you say $300 or $30? dang you robbed the guy.

All: i saw an ad on Craigs for a big old compressor and since i now own that $10 sandblaster i'm on the hunt for one. it's a Binks Lo Boy and it runs but is probably too small at 1.5 HP to run my sandblaster, but for $40 with a few hoses and an impact gun probably an ok deal so bought it and dragged it home.

the orange compressor has my attention because only $300 and 5 HP. owner says rebuilt and if one of you guys said that i would buy it, but rebuilt to some people means a paint job. any tips on what i should check out or look for on a big compressor? I've read quite a bit and thought i'd turn to the experts.

Madison: if it's built like mine you should grab it because i might own 30 carry boxes and it's built better than all of them. good luck.

after you buy it then maybe you can help solve the mystery. i wonder if it was built for a tractor or model T so maybe i should post over there on those forums or if you are a member please do and see if those old guys know something.

cheers

Yes, it runs on white gas, I have an older propane Coleman catalytic heater but I'd never seen one that burns white gas like this. It has a tank that looks like a big version of a lantern tank. On top of that is a dome-shaped element that points straight up and there is a screen that snaps down over it to keep you from touching the element. When I first got it I was stumped because I expected to find a pump to pressurize the fuel but it evidently has a wick that pulls fuel from the well up into the catalyst. It seems to work well but takes forever to get going.

Thanks for the tip on the element Outlaw, I'll leave it alone, information on the 'net is conflicting (go figure) but a lot of people think it's asbestos. Mine is dated 1966 so it wouldn't surprise me.

I've started to get into the white gas stuff this summer ever since I picked up a free stove at a sale in June. I cleaned it up and used it on a camping trip on the July 4th weekend. It worked great but I found that two burners weren't enough to keep up with the appetite of 3 boys under the age of 5 so I've been on the lookout for a second stove. The fuel is easier to transport and store than propane is but I think it's more of a nostalgia thing for me.

These items were sitting in one vendor's booth. When I asked for prices on them, the seller said they were his buddy's, who was out wandering around. :wtf: I hung around for a few minutes, then asked him to set the stuff aside until the real owner came by. He agreed. I bet I walked by 5 or 6 more times before the right guy was there. Fortunately, his prices were very good! :3gears:

A complete SK Wayne 3/8" set. There are a couple substitutions, but filling the holes with my spares shouldn't be a problem.

An SK Wayne combo wrench set in the roll. Aside from the painted-on owner's initials and the substituted 11/16", a lot of these look barely used. :rocker:

Flatintoone,

Very nice pick-up on the S-K wrench set. It's especially good when you get the original roll also  I always like the advertising aspect of the original tool rolls.

I've been basically getting skunked the last few weekend what with the sales with "Tons of Tools" that in reality have squat ! :lol_hitti. Just going to have to keep at it.

Thanks Jeff. My very first you ****! I have been trying to reach that status for a couple of weeks now. I got all excited about it and now my girlfriend is laughing at me. I had not been to a garage sale in years before reading this thread. Now I have become addicted to going and finding good deals. I think I need an intervention and rehab. Thanks a lot GJ.

I;m pissed off at the world, but Sunday Fleas brought some goodies. But not many.

LOL.

USA C'man Electricians Multi-tool 45201 circa 2000 for $4.
Minty and works awesome.

The rest was two sellers and $8 for all.

C'man diamod grip t&g pliers
French made long needle nose
3/8" Wright USA BBB (baby breaker bar) #3438 W
S-K sockets and one Cornwell
Set of pocket Mi-Line USA pocket screwdrivers -flat and phillips

And 3 metric Stahlwille Made in Germany DOE's in 17/19, 10/14, 9/11 mm's.
And a German Saltus brand No. 50 10/14 doe.
Billings USA combo as well.

No love in my area for good German tools at 50 cents a combo I guess. Sad.
Their loss.

LOLZ.

And a big box of Ideal, USA made (many Brooklyn, NY stamped--Yo, yo, yo) new or very gently used hose clamps for $2 for the box.
Too good to pass up.
I think a few GJ folks can use what I don;t need.

There was an awesome 50's Snappy 26" (8 dwr I think) bottom roll cab that was set out yesterday I was told and then sold when I was there today.

Sold for $125. Lots of stickers but dwrs worked fine. it was a hoss. And red. And paint was a 7/10. Light surface rust only.
Local CL will tell the tale. Seller was asking $250 with a smattering of all level tools in it yesterday he said. Hella deal.

It was gone thru by pickers so the box was the best part today.
$125. I shoulda took a pic.

:)

Drive, I'd ask the owner EXACTLY what he means but I suspect that is a cut and paste job from several pieces. Nothing seems to match and worst of all, the tank looks like it was originally a vertical. (What ARE those "legs" on the far end for?)

Rarely will you see the plumbing hanging off the end like that one has for the regulator and what not.

Edit: The Box I got yesterday is 50's, the blue one I had shipped is early 40's.

It worked great but I found that two burners weren't enough to keep up with the appetite of 3 boys under the age of 5 so I've been on the lookout for a second stove. The fuel is easier to transport and store than propane is but I think it's more of a nostalgia thing for me.

I doubt the catalytic element has asbestos in it, since that is an insulator par excellence, and not a wick. (I could be wrong on that though.. :dunno: )

I've never used the old gas dome type, and really never paid them much attention. I've had a vertical panel propane unit for several decades, but it's also a pain to start and I think the "pilot sensor" died...

If you have a Prop stove, get a 20 lb bulk tank and a mast. (And a plastic base for the tank...

Prop lantern on top, stove jacked into one of the side taps on the mast and that's base camp cooking and lighting with instant start (nice after dark...). The gas stove does all the extra cooking (unless it's an overnighter, then I use a gas one burner) and the gas lanterns do most the "portable" and hanging lighting.

A trick: Go get a set of 4 or more of those Solar powered LED yard lights. I use those to mark the way to the privy (since I don't use public campgrounds, and rough camp...) with any trip hazards well marked.

you can also use one inside the tent as an easy light. toss something over it if it's too much light. It should last all night if the batteries are good and fully charged.

One just outside the privy can be brought inside for those emergency trips to the privy...

Only hit 1 today on the way to a family thing. It disappoints me when people advertise "Estate" sale and when you get there the inside of the house if off limits. What a bunch of posers.

Anyways.

$16, I couldn't get the old man to throw in the S.C.F. ammo box as a container, he really wanted a dollar for it. Nice can no rust, nothing stencil'ed and the seal is very intact.

SNIP The Box I got yesterday is 50's, the blue one I had shipped is early 40's.

SNIP.

But it is nearly that old! I had to go back to the '49 catalog to find a drip front top box; and there it was! By the '54 catalog they went away from the drop fronts... They HAD started with the 50's oval on the box too. They were also dong Machinery grey wrinkle in 49, and at least were still doing that finish in '54 even with a different box. That was the original finish before someone rattle canned the outside ivory,
