Cruised past an estate sale sign this morning. I head in with my almost two year old boy and witness a man holding a pair of wooden boxes and asked how much. The guy said $10. I had to find the tools.
I enter the basement and next to a beat chopsaw is a box bursting with machinist tools. I peak at a few to check condition and ask how much for the whole box.

Lots of Brown and Sharpe, James Motrola portable tach, Taft Pierce plate and square things, Gem Instrument MFG, Ametek mechanical force gage, DoAll optical flat.
All for $40. Now, how do I clean some of this stuff up?

No handwritten sigs or dates, on mine. It is numbered "476"; a few of the drawers are sequence numbered, but not the ones that only have one possible locations. two of the narrow drawers are NOT numbered 476, but different numbers... :dunno:

Well, I went back by the EPIC estate sale from Thursday and stopped at another on the way, nothing but the Yale lock at the new one and the EPIC sale was pretty much all but cleaned out. I did score two PLVMB t-bars, two Proto flare wrenches, Snap On and Proto hammer/clearance? wrenches and a Bells System marked red handle tool. The Rockwell miter saw was still there and marked $75, I offered $20 and was accepted so we walked with all this for $27 :willy_nil

The Yale is yours of course, Bell System as well if you want it as that was all that was left. All the B.S. Stanley screw drivers and other hand tools were gone...

Estate Sales 3 and 4 of today.
#3 - A MIS photo frame , Starter Pistol, and diecast Harley model for $17. Plus from the garage a folding keyboard frame for $2.
ES 3-1.jpg
ES 3-2.jpg

#4 - Not much to choose from in tools at this one but a few smalls found in the garage. Two full cans of spray paint, an SK 3/8 extension and small drill index box for a total of $2.
ES 4-1.jpg

It was 50% off at all four sales so the prices were ok. And I was surprised to see some decent tools at a couple of the sales. Maybe because deer hunting season opened today. All the other tool hunters were up north hunting other game this weekend.

U ****. The only way to properly clean those up is to ship them to my house in AZ. LOL. As a former long-term resident of MA, I'm just curious as to what town/city the estate sale was in. I grew up on the North Shore .... I'm still waiting to snag a deal like that out here. Maybe I should move back east.

That Kennedy stack looks like the PO hardly used it. Sweet.

:+1: I like that drop front.

I have a red Kennedy side box.

What drawer pull style does it have? Is it orange or red smooth finish. I have a modern red kennedy side box (20" deep) and it is alot newer than those orange boxes. Is that what you have?

Cool boxes, I found a lower box just like that at a barn sale last month. The bifold door setup is odd but I love the box. I'd never seen an orange Kennedy before.

I think they are from the late 80's up to the early 90's. :dunno: I have a rather strange middle box with that same color and drawer pull design.

I think I got my stuff I posted yesterday from that sale. Was the block grinder still there?

Yes actually it was but I passed to by pretty quickly since it was marked $75 I think and even at 1/2 off that's way more than I want to pay. They did have some things overpriced. I probably should have made a low offer, who knows.

Ok, I wasnt going to post this since it isn't a tool and thought that it wouldn't apply to the thread. Since I just scrolled past a cool little Harley toy I said screw it, so now you all get to see and read about it.

Scored it for $100 from a craigslist garage sale listing three weeks ago. Works perfect, makes all kinds of noise and pays out at 96%. The neighbors already have me $412 up and when the mailman saw it while delivering he offered me $750 for it.

Yeah I tried on the grinder and it was a no go. I really wanted to take a look at the parking meters but the guy said they sold the first day.

Are they all 11 inchers? What are the brands on the first, third, and fourth from top?

Actually they are all 9 inches. The top one is a "Lakeside" the 2nd and 3rd are "Auto" and the 4th does not reveal a name marking yet. I only see the number 5 on one side near the bottom of the handle.

You better have that puppy in your truck of shop by now...:withstupi:soapbox:

Jake, I think I just threw up in my mouth a lil :puke:

Wow! Wait, that's a 24" ruler and not a yardstick? Not so big. :lol_hitti

Yes, it's on my bench now. I didn't want to jinx it by posting early. BTDT
The guy had no idea what he had. He owns a plumbing company and didn't even know that it was supposed to have pipe jaws (they're missing).

At first, looking at the bad photo, I thought it was a Columbian 208. I emailed him last night 15min after he posted it, he got back to me 2hrs later. In the meantime, last night I did some googling for a 208 (all google roads lead to GJ), I finally figured out that Columbian never made a 208, it's a 206 (mushy casting). Still, the price was right. :D

We met this evening and I handed him the cash as soon as I inspected it (I'll be paying some bills late this month). No haggling. I wanted out of there before he got a clue.

It weighs 150 lbs, and the guy wouldn't lift a finger to help me load it. I made him wait while I unscrewed the jaw on the garage floor and took it out to my truck in 2 pieces.

:rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker:

i've been thinking about this most of the day and had to go back to my notes.
i missed one of the clues.
that chest could be early 70s, but i'm now leaning more toward the 60s.

So what is the Clue? Since I'm a Gerstner neophyte.

the drawer layout was changed in the 70s.
yours is the older layout.

theres so many things about those chests that changed over the years.
the hardware(hinges/latches/locks/drawer pulls) of course the emblems. mirrors, top handles to side handles. and more.

Outlaw, that thing is so nice, I'm extremely happy and jealous of you at the same time!! Be sure to post up in my "show your wood" thread when you can. Maybe beatcad would be so kind as to share some knowledge over there on dating these things too?
