MK3, that Americanax is my favorite hatchet head pattern. That (should) have a hardened steel insert on the flat side. and the rest is forged steel. It's harder to sharpen, but holds an edge much better.

If you replace the handle get the longest one you can with the curved handle. It makes it 3X better cutter, and a lot more useful. I have one with a 30" handle for camping, and it's all I need, as it's ax and hatchet (and stake hammer) all in one...

Nice find on the Winchester head! Those are worth $$

It definitely has a hardened bit inset into softer steel. Have to really "work" to get a file to cut. The handle is cross pinned and it is the original 1930's handle so I will leave it, just clean it up. Nice and heavy so it will make a great kindling hatchet.

Unexpectedly stopped at a sale on the way to my parents. CL ad listed tools. It was pretty well picked over but I saw a tool box in a corner. Walked away with this for $20.

Looks like a KRa-57. It will look great on top of my $50 KRA 380.

To top it all off, Mom and Dad were just putting lunch on the table when I walked in.

The CL gods smiled today:

Got this 1/3 HP 6" 3450 RPM Wissota today. It came with a Chicom Stand (with a cooling trough) and when I went to pick it up, another guy was picking up some wood working tools as well (the seller was in the midst of a /garage sale), and commented "That's a nice stand!" I asked if he wanted to buy it, since all I really wanted was the grinder, and he asked how much and I said $20, and he said deal! So I'm into the Wissota for only $30!

It needs the obligatory power cord replacement, and I need to fix/replace one eye shield mounting bar, and the safety glass (Is Tap Plastics open on Sunday? ), and some general cleanup (like de-rusting that cooling tray... Need to come up with a non rusting cooling medium.), but other than that, its good to go!

I'l mount it on a plate, and do the Workmate thing as usual.

And the "Family" gods smiled last week; SWMBO and my oldest daughter went antiquing, and brought me these:

An old Scale with 15-16 KG capacity "Seca" brand and has these folding arms to hold, I assume, either a basket or deep tray? Just looked up "Seca" and apparently they are focused on medical scales so this may be an infant scale with the tray in place... :dunno:

They also brought me a Stanley "England" hand drill, and a "whatzit"

Whatzit is a dibbler for planting bulbs. Garden tool, but still a tool.

Checked collectingsnapon.com.. What is the difference btwn the 56 and 57? Wasn't obvious but only glanced.

KR(A) 57 was designed as a true road chest, not a top box like so many mistakenly call road chests. It is heaver built and slightly larger with different structural folds. The tell tale is the lock location on the KR(A)56 is below the handle where as on the KR(A) 57 the lock is towards the top of the front cover just like on the larger superchest.

If you are thinking the pointy end with the hole in it, I don't agree, that end got a handle or some other wood piece on it. I'm certain the "golf club" end is the business, end.

So after getting the Wilton C1 I posted yesterday, I get up today not planning to go anywhere. I was sitting there looking at CL and see a garage sale five minutes away. Says mancave stuff. Starts at 9:00. So I get in the car at 9:05 and head over. It tuns out to be the whole house. So I head down to the basement and find the craftsman grinder and the Wilton 4" Cadet. I bring them up to get a price and the guy says $30.00 bucks for the grinder and $5.00 for the vise. OK thanks, bye. :bounce:

Went to a friend's yard sale on Sunday and snagged the following stuff:

pics 1-2: pair of wood items, an oak box labeled "Consolidated Aircraft Products", looks like it previously held a measurement or calibration tool, and a pine block with 60 holes drilled in it for reloading, to hold shells while you go through the steps to reload ammo. I don't really have an immediate use for either, though I think I can use the reloading block as a router bit holder in the shop. Also a JH Williams spanner wrench, model 457, parkerized. $3 for everything.

pic 3: 3 lb. box of 6d finishing nails, $1

pic 4-5: pair of what used to be Weller soldering kits, now stripped out but still useful metal boxes. $5 for the pair. Dimensions are 13 x 4.25 x 2.25 inches. Great for holding drill or brace bits, or other skinny things.

Picked up this Foley F16 Filer and Jointer for sharpening saw blades Friday. I plan on repurposing the stand for a buffer but will have to cut it down. I will put the filer itself on OWWM since it's missing a few parts already. $30 also picked up some old Motor books for $1 each and a working Kenmore vintage fan for $8.

finally, some scores! So, I used to be a manager with Sears Hardware, and one of my old stores closed... so I got these for free, picking up more tonight:

Made a few stops today, got a box, then filled it up...

This rust bucket is/was a Kennedy! Any idea on the model number?

70 some odd pieces, including...

This! The smallest cutest little plane I've ever seen! But, has a real blade on it!

Picked up these tool boxes for $25 total on half price day at an estate sale 2 weeks ago.
It even had some tools in it, mostly junk, but at least $25 worth of drill bits, allen wrenches etc. And it had 2 radar detectors in it and a Walter Payton football card!
I'm surprised nobody bought them for $50. I wish I could have been there before all the tools were picked through. Kennedy 526.

Picked these ratchets up at a local pawn/gun shop. They look like a really nice snapon copy but they are USA made. Any Idea on a brand or who hade them? No make just a model number and USA. I would guess is they walked out of the CAT plant in Morton at some point in their life:shocking:

The bottom ratchet looks like the same type of handle as Walden made--I was always under the impression that CAT specified that ALL consumable tools were to be engraved with "CAT MORTON" to keep losses down to a minimum?

That was the case long ago for Pneumatic Tools!
Don't really know who the mfgr. is??? Cranky:beer:

Jwsia,

Those stampings look an awful lot like Snap On date codes. I'm guessing 1967 and 1970. It's entirely possible Snap On made them for a 3rd party.

Slim pickings for yard sales in the NE. I hit a couple of second hand stores that I have hit before. I paid $40 for the CMAN vise (USA) with a 5"+ wide jaw. It works well, I am happy with it. I paid $15 for the consumables and small amount of tools (USA and Taiwan). An 8" Ridgid adjustable is about the only thing notable.

I went all out today so I won't be posting here anytime soon lol.
First CL sale is 50's Sawmaster 3100 power hacksaw. The saw is in great working condition with all original parts. The stand is not original since these were sold as benchtop models.
Second CL sale is a whole lot of machinists tools. My intention was to get jut few that I needed and I ended up getting everything the guy had. Way too many to list them all. Now I have more then I need so if anyone wants something let me know.
All in all I feel good about it.
Welcome to the Sawmaster club! Your saw is in great shape! It appears to be missing the belt guard and the bar has been replaced, I think... mine is jeweled. I envy your auto-cutoff doodad... missing mine. Here's a link to the manual: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/91893/Sawmaster_Power_Hacksaw.pdf
