Picked up a couple of drill bits from cl today 20 bucks. I had to see if i could chuck one of them up in the old allen press... it fits sort of :p

Hopefully i will be getting a grinder for another 15 later today as some of them have some weird grinds on them :headscrat

I think I can help you pin down the date of this anvil a little closer....

Thanks for posting all that i passed on one like it from that cast looking bottom. I was worried about it being a weaker anvil shaped object. It is good to know for future reference

CL grab, showed up for $50. Guy held it for me and turned down higher offers so I gave him $70, he's supposed to call me when he goes through some more stuff.

Then went back today on a sale I'd gone to the other day and picked up a few more things. (Pics 4-7)

I know this thread is about great purchases, but I wanted to report my first sale from a pick. I bought this wrench with a couple dozen others in a metal box for $10 at an estate sale last summer. I just sold this one wrench for $16 on Ebay. Woohoo! This new hobby is already addicting - it helps that it could be self supporting too.

Yeah, I know many of you have been doing this for years and some are even making a living at it, but this was my first.

Blue,

I'm new to this too and I know the feeling.....a few months ago I bought a small "lot" for $15.00 at an estate sale and sold one items to a pawn shop for $30.00. I'm sure I could have sold it for more, maybe $50,00 on CL but I didn't want the hassle. Also bought a small vise for $25.00 and flipped it to a friend for $65.00.

I'm sure others here have much grander flips but congrats to you.

A nice way to pick up a few greenbacks.

Was the one you passed on an Arm & Hammer anvil? The reason I ask is because there was another anvil brand ("Vulcan" anvils made by Illinois Iron & Bolt Co.) that used a similar looking arm and hammer logo, but that logo was raised because all Vulcan anvils were cast iron (and a lesser quality) than wrought-iron or cast steel anvils.

Yes good call. That was the brand i completely forgot/messed up the name of the brand until you mentioned it.

Ben Buck:

It looks like you not only got the double crossing lights, but also the hardware as well.

Have to ask, does yours also have ability to make the sound and does those lights work in staggered sequence on both front and back?

I picked up just one RR crossing light, but no additional hardware or sound, but when asked previous owner if it lit up, he said he never got around to it but thought it did and that it ran on something like 6 or 12 volt. Was able to get light to work with 6 volt battery, but it worked much better when I hooked it up to a 12 volt battery charger.

Great find!!!

That changeable die is pretty cool! All these years and I've never seen one of those.

msgtsmithret:

That die is about the width of a hockey puck but thicker. Made by S. W. Card Mfg Co. of Mansfield Mass. It's a Paragon No. 14.

It's also the first one I've found as well.

It seems as though that is most of what I see here in the pawn shops is the changeable dies.

found this indestro at a thrift store today, $8. it's so clean I don't think it was ever used. any idea how old or new it is?
indestro_zpspvhqqt2m.jpg

Mine may be older, or just looks that way. ... and this is after the e-tank treatment. I found it lying under a garage workbench amid miscellaneous trash and mud 15 years ago - no telling how long it had been there.

Probably early 60's or older; from AA on Duro/Indestro:

I like their tools generally; of the two Indestro seems to have the better finish in my experience.

Duro and Indestro continued to prosper during the 1940s and '50s, but by the 1960s appeared to be losing ground to other competitors. Sometime during the '60s the Indestro operations were formally merged into Duro Metal Products, and the tools began appearing with dual brands "Duro-Indestro". The tool lines were "harmonized", which unfortunately meant that some of the special higher-end features of the Duro-Chrome tools were dropped. The company continued operating through the 1970s and 1980s, and was finally closed in 1990.

Picked up an old Craftsman box and the usual pile of various sockets. (How come I never find sets?)

It has everything from a Snap On Midget 9/32 ratchet to Plomb to a broken Gator Grip socket. Of course it was the normal pile of no name China/Taiwan **** mixed in. $21.20 for everything.

Mike, I don't know if this unit has any type of sound, I doubt it.
The previous owner said he had it working! I managed to get a lense open and the bulbs are 10 volt, # 72.

Ben Buck:

My RR light isn't as complete or impressive as your RR signal light, but I'm still glad to have it.

Here is it lit with using a 12v battery charger to run it's light.

Like my friend Mike, I didn't see many sales today - only two, but here's what I got.

The prize in this pile is the 24" Starrett rule in pristine condition. I bought everything for less than 1/2 what a new one of these costs from Starrett.

The other interesting item is an automatic nut driver by Craftsman. It automatically tightens onto a nut when either tightening or loosening the nut.

Here is one big item from this morning that might be making a permanent stay in the garage and uprooting the craftsman I bought a few weeks ago:lol_hitti

We hit 3 stops and I loaded up but not everything was tool related. Lots of gun stuff and other great items. I'll post more later this afternoon

The ones that got away...

Craigslist ad for "6 cool old (heavy) vises, taking up room in basement, $30 each"

The picture was a.......WILTON!!!!!!

The ad was less than three hours old. I lunged for the Gmail account and fired off a response, saying I had cash and could be there tonight. She answered pretty quickly that one guy was in front of me but that if he didn't respond to her email asking when he could come by, they were mine. :willy_nil:willy_nil

I checked the phone at every stop sign and red light on the way home and right before my driveway, I see this:

"He has not responded so they are yours. The address is...you can come by tonight or tomorrow" and then she texts this:

I get inside and tell SWMBO the good news. When I sit down to look up the address on the map, I get this (8 minutes later):
"Ugh sorry my husband sold them to a coworker they just came and grabbed them sorry!"

:sad::sad::sad:

Arrrrgghh!! So close to major league suckage......

So I finally scored a Baldor! Saw an ad on craigslist for a grinder, with a picture of a neglected baldor grinder for $40. The ad was up for about 6 days, figured it was long gone, but I decided to call anyway. It was still available, but about 40 minutes from my house, and the guy offered to deliver it for a small fee. He told me it ran good. Well when he finally showed up it had some serious vibration, but I decided to pick it up anyway. Glad I did, once I got it home I removed the grinding wheel and wire brush that was on it, and it ran vibration free. What a relief!
Here is a pic; I know it needs paint, but that's part of the reason I bought it, and definitely part of the fun. I''m actually surprised how fast it gets up to speed. Nothing like that $29 Ryobi I have.
