I picked up a snap on precision screwdriver and two pairs of yaktrax in mine and my wife's sizes for $2.50. Also picked up a hart 21 framer. I don't have photo of the hammer yet.

i think i did pretty good. TONS of name brand stuff in here. proto, wright, gearwrench husky usa cman usa sk, klein vise grip channellock, you name it. 2 nice size boxes to carry it all. prob 100-120 pounds worth. i got all the tools for 60 and worked the box in for only 50. kra 3017a friction slides, but they slide great. the sides of the box are painted with big government numbers, but not an issue for the price. this pic was straight off the truck. ive gave it a good bath and greased the slides, it cleaned up really good. the paint is faded, but i think wax will bring a shine to it.

I needed a bigger planer - love my W&H, but its 7" width won't do for the upcoming project. It's going to be a while I decided to watch and wait until a good deal came along. What looked to be an ok deal came up for an old ('50s or so) Craftsman unit, but on Craigs List. CL ain't been good to me. Ever. Still, I called the phone number. Eight PM, but answered on 2nd ring. Chatted for a minute or two, seemed like a nice guy, said what luck I'm only 5 miles away. When can I come take a look at it. How about now, he said. Fifteen minutes, sez I.
Sooo... after dark, headed for rendezvous with Craigs List stranger carrying cash, what's the worst that could happen?
As it happens, the worst was that I couldn't talk him down as far as I wanted, ended up paying $350.:D
This thing is a BEAST for a 12 incher! I took it off the stand to get it into the car, and only managed that by tipping it off into the back, then kind of walking it in the rest of the way. The seller came back out and helped me lift the stand in, which saved me having to take the motor off.
Back home, no way was I going to try any of this on just muscle power!
I got it all back together, and as you can see, it does throw chips. The knives are in better shape than they looked. The only thing that really needs attention is the rust on the table, and it's much more superficial than it looks.
It shows up in the 1950 Craftsman catalog, but of course could be several years older or newer than that. Maybe one of you could chime in with a clue, such as when the change from the globe to crowntop logo happened.
According to the catalog, shipping weight is 290 pounds - without stand or motor! My motor is a Craftsman, but the stand is home brew with some strong pointers to bedframe heritage. It's well done, though, and does its job.
I'm stoked, but still have to wait a few more months for all that timber to dry. Air drying is not for the impatient ... maybe my next machine should be a kiln.:lol_hitti

Maybe some Craftsman expert can help me pin down the date a little closer. I know it was available in 1950, but that's all.
Thanks!

Nice find.

I couldn't take it anymore, and finally submitted to the inevitable. I answered a CL add that had been haunting me all week. A 4" Columbian #804 plate steel vise. He was asking $50 (hence my avoidance), I was only able to get him to come down to $40 (which is still too high for a $25 vise) but I can live with it.

More on the vise thread when I can get to it.

Stage, if you want the spray bomb stencil off, spray some paper towel in place with Simple green and cover it with saran wrap; test every hour or so till it lifts. It shouldn't hurt the better original paint at all. (At least I've always gotten away with it...)

And you still ****. Maybe even more!

Some free stuff I got a while ago. Cast iron flag stand was used by my old Boy Scout troop. Found the Chicago sign base in an alley. Got the bottle jack, aprons, and Wilton wood vise from work. They were just throwing all that away. Weird.

I just scored this today for $100. Powermatic 1200 20" variable speed drill press with Baldor motor. Just needs a new chuck and some rust removal on the table. This thing is a beast.

That was right down the road from me! Are you planning on going to the Gas and Steam Engine Show at the little red school house? Plenty of tools there!

Bigcaddy,

I'm jealous, those are really hard to come in such great shape and looks complete with both tool rests. The two lighted eye shields are the best part and the biggest score. I bet that grinder will look stunning when restored.

Between you and Striper, I'm getting really jealous

It even has the water cup and I found the original manual/parts diagram on Saturday afternoon on my second visit. It should come out very nice looking when done

Wow, that's a hell of a deal for 100 dollars. That has to be one of the top scores of the season so far.

No, I wasn't aware of the show. I'm a member of NHGRS, but haven't been to a meeting or show in years. Getting out of the house isn't easy for me (family obligations 24/7), Lowell is just outside my range unless I make prior arrangements. Things just kind of fell into place this afternoon.

Went to the Portland Oregon P.I.R swap meet. Saw a lot there that I wanted to buy but didn't  like a Hemi mopar k member, various mopar parts, 32 Plymouth 5 window coupe, etc. Did find this stuff that did fit into the budget/needs. It is almost all proto/plvmb/sk/craftsman. Did get a nice 1/4 hp craftsman block grinder that has a 1958 date on it. It just needs a new cord as it is all cracked. It sounds smoother and quieter than my 4 year old 8" grinder that I am currently using. Best part about it was I only paid $25. The big plvmb ratchet is a 3/4 drive and needs a new drive selector and gear. If someone has one I would buy it.

My whole lot-little less than $200 so no suckage but it was fun and I cherry picked everything so I will lay off the tool buying for a while.

Proto tools

Misc brands

P&C tools

Plvmb lot

Sk sockets

Craftsman stuff

The block grinder sounds great and looks to be completely intact including wheel guards and shields. Can't wait to start using it :)

Craftsman pipe threader- I bought one of these at the meet last year that is nearly mint condition but it was missing the handle. I have been looking for but have never found one until the meet this year. I will have to hit this handle with some evaporust ********* but at least now I have my handle.

Nothing Sunday; I even missed out on a nice heavy duty cabinet sitting on a corner for free. went home to drop off SWMBO, and come back with just me and my daughter, and it was gone...

BC PM'ed me for more pics of the watch:

BC, the "purity" number is not 0,925, it is 0,935.

Other markings:

AB in an oval

1060

All the above was repeated inside the second dust cover.

very tiny: H 2196 (numerals were scribed)

Also Scribed: 32 over 99, and 6626886 (man this was hard to read..)

More pics:

I forgot the back cover decorations:

The watch could be an Arthur Baum but the hallmarks don't look that close. Thousands of watches poured out of Switzerland at the turn of the last century.

Either way, it's a good find and it has a beautiful multicolored, gold accented enamel face in perfect condition.

The Heritage Logo was in use from about 1945 -1958. The date code on the motor sez 1948, so, if it's the original motor then '48-'50 would be a good guess on the date for the planer.

Nice find.

Thanks! I didn't know about the date code on the motor, (nor whether it's original) but I did find a wealth of Craftsman catalogs here:

http://www.blackburntools.com/articles/rose-tools-catalog-archives/sears/index.html

I found that link in the Vintage Tools thread.

My planer first shows up in the 1938 catalog, with the globe logo on a small tag, just like mine. (Heritage?)
In 1942, instead it has a large - 10-12" wide Long C logo painted on. In 1959 it's back to the globe tag (probably - a little hard to see), and then in 1960 the planer is gone, replaced by a different one that looks like Foley Belsaw. So, it's likely older than me, but certainly old enough to drink.

Amazing the stuff you can find out just cruising around the Garage Journal!

that Powermatic is a definite USUCK! Well done!

Thanks guys but not sure how much of a deal it is just yet.

Couldn't get the money out fast enough but here's the rub, it's 3 phase and I wasn't able to power it up at location and check to see if everything works, chuck is missing (no biggie) and hopefully the variable speed clutch works not to mention possible run out or motor issues. I do plan using a phase convertor with it.

If all is good then yes it was the deal of the season. If it's in bad shape then I could take the head off and turn it into a vise pedestal on wheels with an overhead lamp and will still be a good deal.

I thought your new grinder find was so nice that I turned down today a 1/2hp Craftsman 297.xxxx Block Grinder with all the trimmings in perfect shape for $40 because I now want a Delta Grinder like yours.

I think you live close by to me so I hoping there's more lurking in the area.

I'm not sure I should be saying thank you to you for posting the pic of it.

Some of you guys had an awesome weekend!
I had a couple small sale and flea finds Saturday. Took a drive Sun. with the GF to catch the tail end of lousy estate sale and checked out a cool antique co-op. Unfamiliar turf so I wanted to keep driving. Within a minute she spotted a sign garage sale with tools (gosh, I love her). We got there after 4pm and they were packing up but welcomed me in. Mostly hardware but ended up with a bin full of body tools for $50 and a nice free and clean toaster oven! Toaster oven pics coming soon :lol_hitti
