Some light sprinkles passed through very early this morning. Nearly every sale cancelled even though by 9am the sun was coming out.
I picked up a oil filter socket, digital no name tire gauge, and a brand new fuel filter for a 95 Buick for a quarter each.
I have no idea what I'm going to do with the filter, but I own a 95 Pontiac so it might fit that?

This morning, I had to pass on a garage sale with lots of tools listed so I could go back to pick up that table saw from yesterday. So, no sales for me today. :(

Preview part 3 -

I GOT IT OUT !! :rocker:
As I was pushing the saw up the stairs, I kept hearing my sister (on the top end)
muttering "He's my brother, I love him. He's my brother, I love him." over and over.
I just know that I'm going to pay for asking her to help out sometime in the near future. :scared:

I got to use a previous estate sale find .....

100_1733.jpg

..... to lower the saw down the steps into my shop.

100_1734.jpg

Gravity is your friend, but she can be a cruel mistress if you get stupid.

Congratulations. Did the door need to come of in the end?

Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk

Yes it did. When I got there this morning, the owner was just finishing up taking the door off. I offered to put it back on when I was done. But he said to leave it so that the guy who bought the ShopSmith could take it out the same door.

This saw is causing me no end of consternation. There is no data plate on it to tell me the model number, and I've gone through all the catalogs from the Heritage Logo years and couldn't find a match.

I'll have to ask for help from the guru's once I have a chance to take pictures. It may be a while. All hell has broken loose on the homefront the last two days. Keeping on top of it while dealing with this saw has me pulling my hair out.

Blue, I'm not sure who was looking and what for, but that is one of the desireable earlier aluminum framed WMs

BC, Nice ave on those ratchets!

Scimonetti, those are indeed outboard motor fuel tanks. If not rusty inside, nice to have. I have a 3 gallon single line tank I keep white gas in and rigged a hose and valved spigot on as well as a Schrader valve, and us that a as "fueling station" for white gas lanterns and stoves.

Scimonetti, that warning on the pressurized tank is correct. So be sure to depressurize it when you are not actually using it.

OK, the day was good, if not great; the big annual block sale did not disappoint completely!

First stop was an early one, not at the Block sale; a larger Erie Tool Works Pipe vise and a Jar Carousel for the small stuff The vise pic is deceptive it stands 12" tall to the top of the screw in that pic.:

Some of the BS scores, (the first one is on the next post due to pic count)

A cool chime for SWMBO, (she loves this type of sound) for $3

The valves were Free at the place I bought the Chime at, all new and made in the USA!

The Pin Spanner was a buck.

And $5 for the See's Candy hammers, Snow Proof, and the little oil spout, which is marked "Bardahl" :pimpflash

I almost forgot: I also got a pristine Zeiss Ikon Contaflex 35 mm camera with a case, and a second lens (possibly wide Angle? 4:1 150mm? ) for SWMBO's collection; probably hold that one for Xmas.

No pics as I had to smuggle it into the workroom...

Great stuff as always Dave. What size is the Easco ratchet? I'm 1/3 the way to a complete set as long as that isn't 1/2" :lol_hitti

Rainy day, a number of sales but all spaced sporadically throughout the city.

Went to a sale that had a bunch of machinist items, nice stuff, but not so nice prices even if you needed it yesterday.

Number of "that sold earlier or yesterday".

Found this nice little stanley 1.5" clamp vise for $2. Will go as a desk ornament/business card holder. I can't remember ever seeing a 1.5" version before, thought it was cool, seller was real nice.

Great scores, that Kobalt ratchet is on my short list! It's one of the Williams made ones, the first tools I bought were a set with that ratchet from Lowes and I traded in the ratchet on a non-USA one before I knew better.

WOW! Lots of great finds today by everyone. I had to work today so no time for GS. Hopefully tomorrow. Lots of big community and Sub sales around here so I'll see what's left that I can scrounge up from final day.

Thanks Outlaw, I figured I could at least use it to store denatured alcohol or other things in. They are indeed pressurized tanks, I found some reading on them.
http://outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/Johnson/Pressureized Fuel Tanks.htm

''These motors use pressurized fuel tanks, known as Cruis-a-Day Tanks. Rather than sucking fuel from the tank, the dual line hose pumps air into the tank, pressurizing it to 4-7 PSI which forces fuel back to the motor. Basically these pressurized tanks are an extremely dangerous fire or explosion danger. OMC finally stopped using these tanks sometime in the 1960's.

You can tell if you have one of these tanks because the hose will have two lines, one to pump air into the fuel tank, and the other to deliver fuel to the motor. This type of tank was the first exterior fuel tank that OMC came out with wand was new technology in it's day. Once the problems were identified, boat motor manufacturers switched to a single line fuel suction system which is much safer."

Gasoline and Gas Vapor under pressure is nothing less than a bomb!

It is difficult to get these tanks to seal properly, even when new. If the tanks leaks, gas and oil will escape into your boat and into the air.

Leaky tanks also loose needed pressure to deliver fuel up the long hose back to the motor.

If you have a scored cylinder, these motors could sneeze (fire within the block) and force pressure down the fuel line and into the tank. This has been known to cause the caps to blow off the thank and shoot up 20 feet into the air! This sneezing can also ignite your fuel tank. This has also been known to cause fuel lines to rupture.

If you are out on the water and your tank fails to hold pressure, the only way to run your motor is to hold the tank up above the level of the tank and let fuel gravity feed to the motor.

These tanks were not simple to operate. You have to pressurize the tank with a hand pump before you can start your motor. You also have to depressurize the tank before taking the cap off."

People still are looking for them though, I might put them on craigslist for a bit and see if any boat restorers are interested, if not I can always adapt them for a future jon boat build.

I used those tanks for many years, and never had a problem with them. They're very heavy and durable. You just loosen the cap to depressurize and then remove it. If there's fuel in the carburetor, it'll pressurize without pumping the primer.

Lots of nice finds you guys.

JonDick- what a nice ratchet haul

Wnyflyer-I'm not sure about the Kent Moore part but that Palm grip clutch set is an unusual find. I've seen Palm Grip flat blade screwdrivers with the female drive end like those. The most common is the Palm Grip palm ratchet. I take it they are 3/8 drive?

I like that pocket screwdriver as well!

Some of my recent finds.

Pic 1: The little breaker bar is S-K. The top two ratchets were an unlikely find, two American Forge. The bottom ratchet is Upland Forge Taiwan, but it's a goofy Indestro knockoff so I grabbed it anyway. Screwdriver is SNAP oN.

The knife is a Puma made in Germany. It's rought but I paid about two or three bucks at a pawn shop. Less pawn shop complaints out of me from now on.

Pic 3: Just bought that today for about $25

Pic 4: Mixed socket set of S-K/Cornwell

Pic 5:The speeders are (top down) Craftsman, Giller, Williams, Duro.

I hate to be the triple poster but almost forgot something important.

Vulcan J.H. Williams working salesman sample pipe vise. Been wanting one to go with my miniature chain tongs.

I paid up a bit for it. About $30. They had it in the display case at an estate sale yesterday and I was very excited to find it, it's awesome!

3baygarage,

Yes the drivers have a 3/8" female square drive in the end.

You got some serious quality stuff recently, well done. And that miniature Vulcan/Williams pipe vice is way cool  ................:. I would pay $30 any day of the week for that, it is just too cool.....can't find those often I bet.

I have little to compare to the finds posted today. But I am excited by a couple of my finds. I went out early to pick up a vise. But on the way accidentally stopped at a sale, we have all done that I think, AND on the way back. well I am weak , what can I say.

So first the vise I went out for. A Yost 203 1/2 for a mere $15. My very first YOST. The seller did not really know what it was and I made my decision based on a bad CL photo. It has issues but nothing compared to the price.

Then to the estate sale. Not so good. The guy was a hoarder. Supposedly a flea market seller, but he bought badly and kept most of it. I did get a few hammers though along with a Thermometer and a brass backed saw. The saw blade is pretty bad but it was made by Spear and Jackson in my home town of Sheffield UK so I kinda had to have it. Fortunately the sellers were totally reasonable about pricing and I got out for $7 total. The Claw hammer is Plumb. The others are no name but marked with weight and USA. The thermometer is China. :dunno: but it works and is big enough for me to see the scale. Next stop was a "Wedding Sale".
Well it seems that Dad had told his daughter that he had no money for her upcoming wedding. So he had previously placed his deceased mothers home in her name and told her that she could/should sell off the house and contents to pay for the wedding. So she and her fiance along with dad and brother were there selling away like crazy. I was late to the sale but saw a block grinder with wire wheel and scotch brite wheel which I got for $15. Then I asked about the vise. A US made Columbian 5". Almost exactly the same as my import 5" Columbian that I use as a beater on my welding bench. It cost me $50 but I was very happy. By the time I was buying the vise I was sat drinking Rum with dad and talking about his old Cuban home. Then the Fiance brought me a beer. $50 was cheap after making new friends and seeing the delight on the daughters eyes. Last stop only brought me a 3 1/2" hole saw with Mandrel. A size I use on boats occasionally.

I appreciate the bargains I find at these sales but it seems more and more I find new friends and acquaintances more than bargains these days. I think that is fine by me as I really don't need more stuff, but it sure fills a day and is very satisfying. It was good Rum too.

Sorry first pic is not too good.

Not much luck around here, but I did find this guy at ReStore for $.50. Anyone know the maker? Has a Plomb feel, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

The Reveal -

So, with all the craziness going on around me right now, I thought I'd post my find from friday that I've been teasing. The pictures are crappy because I rushed, better ones will have to wait until things calm down. I'll try to post more in my projects thread (found in my sig.) when I can get back to this.

So, as I mentioned earlier, I found a Craftsman Cabinet Saw at an estate sale near my house on friday. I got there extra early to get a number (2-1/2 hours early) and still ended up with #13. Fortunately they let in the first 20, so the rush to the basement was on. The only picture I saw of the table saw was the one I posted on friday. It only showed the saw from the back, so I had no idea what I was really competing for. I ran to the basement and the 3 guys in front of me went straight to the bench. As soon as I got there I slapped my hand on the saw and yelled "MINE !". I still hadn't taken a look at it. One of the other guys gave me a sold sticker and I scratched his name out and put mine on it. I then went back upstairs to ask how much it was. When she told me the price, I didn't bother to haggle. I just started peeling Jackson's off my money roll.

Then, the real fun began, as posted previously it took me two days, three trips (good thing it was only 8mi away), and begging my sister to help to get it out of the basement. I got it off the trailer and into my basement shop by myself.

Now the hunt for a model number commenced. There was no data tag anywhere I looked. I knew it was a Craftsman from the Heritage Logo era, so I went through EVERY catalog from 1945 -1959. NOTHING.

Finally, this evening, GJ member Red Leader posted this info in another thread -

If that is a 'Craftsman' saw that you picked up in that picture, that is not the King Seeley/Emerson cabinet saw, but the 12" Darra James Craftsman-badged saw.

It is, in fact, a pretty rare bird and has been floating on and off my quest list for a few years. I would love to have the perfect trifecta of vintage Craftsman cabinet saws (Atlas 9", King Seeley 10" and Darra James 12") but I think I still struggle with where I'd put the 12". Still...if I came across a Craftsman-badged one at an estate sale I think my heart would skip a beat and I would be forced to, out of collector duty, make sure it made it into my garage:D

On that one, you can remove the aluminum side extensions and the back one too. However, I have not seen in hand how to get one apart more than that. You will have a bear of a time with that cabinet. That cabinet is solid 3/16" steel, I believe. It is a ******** saw. The elevation screw mechanisms are fairly often stripped from huge motors hanging off the back of the huge motor mounts.

However, I wish you luck! When you get some pictures of it, would you mind posting them on my thread (http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103099)? I have been trying to document these saws and have come across about 6-8 of them. On the large Craftsman logo on the front, there should be a 3 digit code, sometimes with an 'S' prefix. I'd love to know that number. I assume that they were hand numbered and I've never seen one above 1000, meaning that they were C-man badged in fairly low numbers. They never appeared in the Craftsman catalog. They might have been a test run that Craftsman did and it was either short lived or just didn't work out. Did the saw come with any literature? I'd LOVE to see what that looked like.

In any case, please tell the story of this one when you get a chance! :D

Yup, the stamped code on the badge is #S477. :bounce:

This beast feels like it weighs a couple hundred pounds. It nearly killed me pushing it up 9 steep stairs strapped to a 2-wheel handcart.

It looks like there is a missing lock knob on the front face and I couldn't find the blade wrench, but otherwise it's complete. The PO wired in a switch box to the front and then a cut extension cord was spliced in to plug it into an outlet. I'll be replacing the wiring and looking for a new switch with a panic button. Otherwise, I'll just do a good cleaning of the 32"deep x 42"wide table, and put on some leveling feet to deal with my uneven floor.

For the saw w/motor (Doerr 3/4hp 1725rpm dual voltage), the fence, the miter gage, and the clamping crosscut miter (which I think belongs to the ShopSmith that was also for sale) I only paid .......................

:rocker: $150 !!!!!! :rocker:

EDIT - After a little jaunt over to VM, it looks like this is a rebranded Darra James Model 95 from the early to mid 1950's. I still don't know what model number Sear/Craftsman gave to it.
