Thanks to a heads up from Jakemac, I caught an estate sale in Stoneham, Mass today, along with another smaller one in Bedford on the way.

Here's what $20 got me in Bedford:

- An odd shaped mini-sledge with the handle rotated 90-degrees from "normal"
- Channellock side offset side cutters (No 447)
- Snap On 3/8" ratchet that doesn't ratchet
-Snap on swivel (may be impact wrench tool)
- Kawasaki vintage wrench set
- Handful of long and short Craftsman, Snap on and Bonney sockets
- 18" mortar spreader
- A beat up Wilton clamp on vise (missing parts, but my first Wilton in the wild so I had to buy it)

Next was the rich target environment in Stoneham. This place was amazing - Snap On, S-K, Craftsman galore. Also tools off every description, building supplies, auto parts. The former owner had also built a huge palatial garage along the side of his house that he never quite hour finished (I'll post some pictures of it over in the Garage Gallery).

Prices were high - they started at about Craigslist retail, but I still found some good deals:

- 5 mondo Snap On combo wrenches, sized 1-11/16" to 2"---$10 each
706d5bd979f9988efd190bc2c2cf91bd.jpg

- Oxy-acetylene welding kit with rusted old dolley, charged tanks and two torches---$100. I took a chance on this rig because the tanks are likely due for their hydro check, but I've been wanting a torch rig for a while, so I paid up.

The rest below I got for another $50:
- Two huge Milwaukee self-feeding drill bits
- Two 1-1/4" Crosby brand shackles
- 1" Craftsman combo wrench
- Bonney 8" adjustable wrench

- V. And M. bench-mounted hand grinder. Anyone know anything about this name. It "feels" pre-war.

ea6415cdd48fca28e7f8ad10e622cc6a.jpg

- Pair of Signode CU-30 strapping cutters (didn't know what these were til I got home)

34d22e015d4ba12a2e997348adbe1e4f.jpg
-Two Boston & Lockport double block pulleys

- 2 sticks of Snap On 3/8" deep sockets, metric and standard

- Articulating lamp with magnifying lens and fluorescent light
9e12e952853f3597ffa0e24202172e93.jpg

- Finally, this crusty S-K machinist tool box, minus front door. Inside is in pretty good shape, and full of S-K socketswith some Snap on and Craftsman throw in. The white pellets are packing foam skilled in by some previous shopper.

All in all, another good day. Plus, I'm pleased to report I am having success peddling some of my finds on Ebay, so this hobby is, if not yet paying for itself, at least making it cheaper. Plus, it helps to keep my garage from looking like some of the places I've picked.

Get a SK ratchet in the 1/4" set and watch it pay for most of today's purchase. Those little sets go wild with bidders on eBay. The lowest I've sold one for was 45.00

Could be! The 59 catalog shows an aluminum Clamp and the (Generic) Catalog No. for that series clamp is 9 M 6670; so a part No. of 9-66703 for a three incher makes sense.

I wonder if the MFG, had that number and Sears adopted it, or the MFG simply adopted the Sears No.? (it wouldn't be the first time)

Outlawmws and JakeMac:

Thanks for the info, as I ran into it when doing the searches.

Was out on Friday at Garage Sales and saw in person my first treadle/pedal jig or scroll saw. Although didn't buy, thought it was deserving of catching a couple of pics to share here. Pics 1-3 New Rogers

At same sale was a parts jig/scroll saw. Not sure if it was a treadle/pedal or driven by motor. Only markings are cast numbers that appear on various parts such as JS 1, JS 2, JS 4, JS 8 (i.e. see last pic and pulley wheel shows JS 8). Bought as thought someone might need some parts on a restoration project.

If anyone has info on Mfg or Type, would like to find out some info on it.

Mike

Went to go pick up the Cole vise and along the way, stopped by a Baltimore dealer (member here) and snagged some goodies from his "not snap-on" hoard.

Also pried this old Danaher "blank" ratchet out of his tight grip. It was just too cool to pass up!!

Thanks, BC, good to know. It's missing a few sockets, too, but not many.

Also, apparently the same is true of those Signode strapping cutters. Who knew you needed a special tool to cut metal strapping, or that it would cost so much?!

How much did you spend for that pile?

I'll never tell. :bounce:

But I could use some help identifying the things next to the mold ejection pins. Look like some kind of bore polishing tools.

I got this superratchet in early May for 50 cents. And I think I remember buying a deep socket with it to make it an even $1.

That same day I bought these 2 oil cans for crazy cheap. I think both for $10 or less. One is the eagle oil can and the other is the Richard oiler
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1435374063.460924.jpg

Another day I got this Boston pencil sharpener for $12

I picked up a similar set last week for $175 so I have to say you did well. The other way you do better than me is by selling stuff.. My shop is starting to look like the places you pick... :lol_hitti

Work got busy, so I haven't gotten on here in awhile. Thanks for the replies on my Snap On mid bx score.

Zlking: I have a kra 58c made in 1976. Picked it up about three years ago for $40 I think. My mid box has one divided drawer, the other two are wide open

Pfsard: I've been looking for one of these for years now. Good luck finding one!

Bubinga: it's about 14.5" deep, so a couple inches deeper than the top box.

I would be careful with those tanks, the oxygen tank is obviously a rental (raised lettering on the neck), so most likely nobody will touch it to fill/exchange. And the acetylene is most likely a rental too if it is paired with the oxygen. I know my local welding supply wont touch a rental tank, whether it is in hydro or not.

Although, for $100, that is the cost of the gas itself. So not bad at all. At least you get the torch and cart. :)

Nice KRA58. I thought the top two drawers each had a divider. Do yous have a spring loaded top drawer for the lock mechanism? Mine are all from the 80's, they may have changed a bit. :headscrat: I'd like to find a 70's version eventually.

If you start putting a caliper to the ejector pins, the hones will probably be the same or close to it.

I like to use old ejector pins for punches and every now and then, I'll grind a flat blade for a custom screw driver into one.

Guys I think I need to take a break for a bit. I hit 4 big tool sales in a tiny few block radius over 2 days. Fun finding everything but then it gets to the point where I get stuff home and it feels like work. Once in a while I go a bit overboard and get overwhelmed with this stuff. Not to mention my wallet took a hit.
Here are some of my new finds. I'm leaving out about 3/4 of what I brought home. Too much to go through and I just plain overdid it this time.

Here we go:

Got the Snap On top chest with all Snap On contents and two mini Snap On kit boxes for 100 + tax. Everything is excellent to like new. The owner took care of his stuff big time.

I vaguely remember that "overwhelmed" feeling. You've really hit the jackpot the past couple of days. U ****. Most of those finds are in great shape.

3bay: I certainly understand the thrill of the hunt and the tendency to devote too much time, money or both to this hobby. However, when it starts to affect you (or your family), then taking a pause/break is not at all a bad idea. Consider what you really want/need of everything you've accumulated and be willing to let go of what doesn't mesh. I for one don't want to leave my offspring to deal with a pile of wonderful, cool **** that they care nothing about. For me, the "honey hole" sales like that are places for wonderful bargains, but they are also a good "appetite suppressant" because they show me how bad it can get.

Cheers!

Yep, exactly my concern. But as you said, worth it for the gas and other parts.

I totally relate to your thoughts about taking a break. I'm doing the same thing and not targeting multiple sales each week for awhile. If something really useful becomes available fine, but I've just accumulated too much stuff and need to get busy sorting and selling off what I don't want/need.
It's the balance we need sometimes to keep this fun and not just accumulating stuff.
Time to get busy and list things on CL and eBay.

"zkling has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space."

I was going to point you to the ESTATE SALE FINDS thread below, there is an unidentified roller that I believe may be an old Proto/Plomb. I know either you or Outlaw can identify it, check it out:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=295417

I thought one of them might be but after some further looking they are neither plomb/proto. Don't know the manufacturer either?? Anyone else have ideas?

Yes it does have the spring loaded mechanism. Unfortunately it appears that one of the slides is bent slightly. It's just enough to make the drawer stick a little. Hopefully I can straighten it.

Somewhat same here. I've been selling more stuff than buying. Trying to buy easy flippers. Just sold my black and red craftsman tool cabinet on eBay. Just need the buyer to pay.

Gentlemen, I agree.
I slept in today because the last two weekends left me a bit overwhelmed ................. and broke. I've got a big pile of tools covering my bench that need to be gone over and I still haven't had the time to clean up or rebuild some of the tools that I picked up a year ago. I've got vises on the bench and on the floor in various states of disassembly that I haven't touched in months. Too many good sales, too many miles driven, and too much money spent too close together has my head spinning.

I need a little time off to sit and think.
Hmmmmmm, maybe perusing CraigsList or eBay will help me relax. :lol_hitti

It's apparently New In Box Season for me right now.

I just picked up this New In Box Coleman Dual Mantle Lantern with an unopened gallon of White Fuel AT THE CURB.

I opened it and the box is dry and the bottom of the lantern is perfect - not rusted from a wet box or anything.

Can you run these indoors - ie during a power failure?

Cheers

Jim

PS: It sat there at the curb for 1+ hour before we looped back and picked it up. No takers at free? WTF

We used one indoors during a two-week power failure back in 1996. That was the last time we got more than six inches of snow...

Keep it near an open window. They consume a ton of oxygen and exhaust carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

They also pump out a ton of heat, which is why we had it running indoors (albeit beside the 4'x3' open window!)

When camping, the lamp always stays outside. Too much risk when it's in a tent.

Jim, we ran our lantern inside for a few hours when our electricity went out recently due to a storm. Sat it on the table and had dinner, then let it run while we watched it storm for a while. Make sure you have adequate ventilation, we had windows cracked since the AC was off anyway.

3Bay, I feel you completely, besides me being busy as hell the last month, I too was broke and not able to hit the sales as usual. It was actually kind of pleasant, sleeping in and not having to hustle dirty old tools for a dollar....Take some time off, when you are ready, the sales will still be there.

I rode with the woman to drop off the kids at work this morning and stopped in at one sale, bought some stuff, then remembered Scimonetti picking up a Disston saw recently and decided down the road to go back and pick up the one at this sale. I ended up spending my last dollar the second trip so until I get some selling going on, I will be on break as well. Pics when the phone charges

Today was a waste of time even leaving the house. 3 advertised sales, the first 2 nobody was even home and at the third a lady said they had changed their minds. Yet they still left over a dozen signs up leading people to their house.
Saw one big sign that said "tools". Got there and asked where the tools were. Man pointed to a bunch of plastic kids toy tools. I yelled down the long driveway "the tools are a lie" and about 8 people just turned around and walked back to their cars. Yard sale operator called me an *******. I called him a liar for putting up "tool sale" signs when in reality there was not even one single real tool.

It's getting to the point that people know the word tools will bring in lots of customers so they just put tools on nearly every sign now.

We used one indoors during a two-week power failure back in 1996. That was the last time we got more than six inches of snow...

Thanks for the responses to my question - altersaddle and nine4gmc .

In the summer - when windows would be open anyway it wouldn't be an issue. In the winter it would be a different thing. A friend sets a propane version on a table on his deck outside and it glows thru the patio door for nighttime illumination when the power is out.

Cheers

The propane lanterns are quite safe to run indoors as long as your house is not 100% air tight. Just crack a window a tiny bit if you want to keep the heat in or if its summer, you'll end up with windows open anyways or the heat from the lanterns will make it unbearable inside.
The liquid fuel lanterns put off more fumes and require more ventilation. I try to avoid running liquid fuel lanterns in the house simply due to the smell alone.

The estate sale i thought would be great was mostly a bust. They had high prices on everything tool related but the funny thing is it was in a crappy neighborhood to so they shouldn't of been asking those high prices. Got some j.c. penny sockets and weight sockets 50 cents each and also a indestro ratchet for $4. I got a proto huge socket and extension for $5 pretty rusty should of called them out on that high price but i think it will clean up nice but the nicest thing i got was this sk tools small tool chest for $10 it is pretty rusty but i think it is all surface i plan on next weekend to sand blast it and repaint it i think it will turn out really nice.
