The only visible difference between the 1940 ratchet and the ratchet New Britain would patent and, oddly, start making only a year later is the length (got shorter) of the selector switch. For that reason, and because they are relatively rare, most WWII collectors will put the 1940 design for New Britain, NONE BETTER, Husky, and Craftsman BE in their kits without any qualms.
What is the finish on the sockets and handles? And are the sockets marked like this?
Or do they say 'CHROME' on them?

On this side of the pond this is whats called either a surface gauge or a scribing block. Its a machinists tool to be used with a surface plate to mark layout lines on a work piece which is tradionally covered with marking blue and now often felt tip pen. The diagonal rod (the scriber ) is set against a rule using either the clamp on the verticle rod or the large pivot at the bottom and the other screw at the base gives some fine adjustment. Useful for marking out parallel line to place screw holes etc Can also be used with some adaption to hold a dial indicator. I've either two or three made by Moore & Wright including one about 18" tall.

Thanks for the extra info on the ratchets. I've been trying to find out more history on these via the web.
I've cleaned off the outside of one socket to take pics and the finish seems like chrome plating but does not have the word "Chrome" on it anywhere.
The sockets are marked similar to yours except the number is T1240 as seen in the attached pics.
Anyone that has pics of what the original set should look like and the original box paint color that would be greatly appreciated.

Picked this up today after work. It was a CL ad I stumbled on last night and immediately responded to the owner. A nice young lady cleaning out the garage of this rusty old socket set. The box is pretty rusty outside but metal is solid so it can be saved. A little original paint is left on the inside but the New Britain decal is long gone.
This is a None Better brand 1/2" socket set made by New Britain. The original leather handle on the box is still there and mostly intact. It's the S-40 model ratchet that was patented in 1940 and from the look of everything it likely dates back to that pre-WWII era.
Most of the original sockets are there, the ratchet still rotates well and the breaker bar and speed wrench are there. A few other pieces were added over the years. A couple Cornwell universals and other odds and ends.
$25 for the whole set. I am happy and can't wait to clean it all up.
