Stopped by an "estate sale" over the weekend and saw an item I let get away since I didn't have room to take it with me and didn't need it, and another big workshop tool some might remember from about 3 decades ago.

The first was an early-style Black and Decker Workmate fold-up work table that had to be older than my 1980's Workmate because it still had the diecast aluminum (?) supports. Someone bought it before I got to it but I wouldn't have bought it anyway because I was in my small car that day - the guy said he paid $15 for it. It was in very good shape - just a few cobwebs but no paint stains or signs of heavy use.

The other "find" that was in that junky garage was an old Shopsmith. I remember attending one of those in-person sales demos in the mid-80's when they used to sell for $800 (?). There was a little rust on the rails on this estate sale Shopsmith but the motor headstock (if that's the right term) still moved smoothly enough on the rails.

I didn't take an in-depth look at it to see if all of the parts were there, but I heard the guy who had bought the vintage Workmate talking to a buddy of his on his cellphone and saying, "I know how you're interested in old tools and such. You should know that they've got an old Shopsmith here in the garage that they're willing to let go for about $100..."

For the right guy, that Shopsmith might be a great find.

How small a car you got?...

I remember watching Shopsmith commercials on TV as a kid....wonder how long they sold those things. They're a tough sell today. If that Workmate was early enough, I'll bet you could get more for that than the Shopsmith.

I was going to say the same thing myself. They are used with a faceplate for jobs that do not fit in a chuck and are turned between centers.

Got a text from a buddy on Friday to let me know he was doing his first yard sale of the season this past weekend. He does cleanouts so he's always finding tools, which he admittedly doesn't know what a lot of them are even used for.

The Starrett bench level needs some serious love and the puller is a 2/3 jaw puller.



He had more sockets but I wanted to leave behind some good stuff for the sale. The ratchet at the bottom is unmarked.



The top are some Bell crimpers? I'm sure Jeff Moss will know their purpose. I was stoked to find the aircraft wire twister. I have a HF one that barely did the job. This one is branded MILBAR and works nicely. The unmarked crimper is missing the end die but I'll be able to use it for the other spots.

Some loose dies, what appear to be new impact tips and a dirty old vice grip.

I got all of the above for the tune of $20 and the agreement that I'd weld a winch mount onto his trailer whenever he got around to buying the winch.

Really hectic weekend here, but still managed to get a few good deals. No pictures this time. (I know, I know.. I promise to take pictures before getting everything put away next time)

Stop 1: Really wish I had seen this sale ad earlier and gotten out there Friday morning..
HF vice, Berz-O-Matic Socket (never seen one before), assorted hose clamps and some drill bits $5

--The ad showed a 3/4" socket set (looked to be SK) and an old grinder on it's original stand. He said he sold a ton of tools on Friday and that if I had offered him $5 for the grinder I could have had it. He gave it to the guy who bought the lot of tools.

Sale 2: Half gallon of driveway/deck cleaner for $1

Sale 3: Electric power washer for $20, perfect to use with the driveway cleaner!

So in my last post I mentioned I was at a sale I had been to before, and that I felt pretty good about that day, so here is the pile.

From the second friday in may
20+ mostly large, mostly impact sockets+adapters. most are proto, some williams and snapon.

small williams (IIRC) DOE but its like lobular or something, i will get better pic soon

I think his first price was 50$ but I walked away for 35!


Then after that place, I hit an estate sale, everyone went for the power tools and I was basically the only one at the hand tool table.

bell systems (is this a sheetmetal hammer?) got this because I have a bell systems pliers

and Roberts #5 which after some research is an upholstery type hammer i think?

I have no use for these hammers but they were too cool to not own
Best part I walked out for 6$, didnt even haggle.

All nice scores above. Hit some yard sales on Saturday with my wife and granddaughter. Nothing to right home about but picked up what you see below:

Some 3 1/2 in drive craftsman, some 3/8 drive craftsman and some 3/8 drive Husky. All USA all but 1 or 2 of the Craftsman are v series. Also, I'm happy anytime I can pick up a superwrench. The pliers are CeeTee Crescent USA. Used the evapo-rust for the first time. I would give it a B+. Probably higher but I don't have anything to compare it to. Paid $5.50 for everything including the 2 wrenches soaking.

One body hammer was a Pexto. None (that I could see) on the others.

Scored a nice set of Dorman parts drawers full of wheel studs from a local shop having a closing sale. Sad...another old school store gone.paid $50 and there were others for sale with different stock. These were the cheapest. Just wanted them to store hardware. Giving the wheel studs to a friends repair shop.

Glen, they are really nice. From the photo they look like brand new. Nice find and good price.

Your right there is two of them bolted together. They are built like tanks and I got an extra drawer and some threaded rod holders that I was too lazy to post. The threaded rod holders are pretty beat up, so they are perfect to organize lathe cutoffs/scrap.

Seems like others had some nice scores this weekend as well. Great thread, interesting finds.

I had to run an errand this afternoon that turned out to be a wasted trip. Since it was near the Habitat Restore, I stopped in to see if there was anything worth looking at.
Nope.

I did grab this stamped steel wrench because I thought it might fit the arbor nut on my table saw.
Nope.

The wrench is 1-3/16" - 1-1/2". The arbor nut is 1-1/4". "Missed it by that much !"

I figured that I'd grab it until I found something better for that saw.
No big loss, with 50% off I only paid 13¢.

It turns out that this is a wrench for adjusting the friction on LCN door closers.
Sometimes ya win, sometimes ya lose.

We inherited my wife's dads Coleman stove identical to yours, vintage 1974. We pumped it up and it lit off, with the 40 year old fuel that was in it.

That is one nice thing about naphtha (Coleman fuel) it really doesn't go bad,

The unmarked ratchet in the picture is a plomb for sure! It might be a grind off if it is unmarked. I would look at it closer and check and see if there are grind/smooth marks in the middle of the indentations on the handle. Most likely from when plvmb changed their name to proto.

Pic 1--Leviton on/off NOS switches (11), behind it is Emesco Junior Casting Machine # 34, Johnson 6 ft Bar, Lawson #18 Angled Pipe Wrench by USHCO Mfg Co Buffalo NY, Leviton NOS plug in outlets (10). Also got, but not pictured, was 2 sets of landscape lights by Malibu and a 12" Columbian Clamp.

Yup, I have a couple with no markings. Besides, I'm quite sure that model wasn't made in '49, it phased out in about '46-'47 based on what I've seen in catalogs.

OK Ill check it out, I went to the section from Clasville PA to around untiontown PA in mid 2013, but that wasright before l went in for my cancer operation, noe my blood test that chesks cancer, called CEA is High again, its not a good sigh. I was still taking stuff out of the car December 2013, cause a lot of it stayed in the car when I was in the hospital.
Maybe l better not buy no more stuff till I see, But, man, that was a great sale, all the way from claysville PA, through Washington PA, there was a big going on's festiable type of deal, in Claysville PA
I got a lot of neat stuff cheap that time, I got a rusted up old cornwell ratchat, and my little stubby 3.8 cornwell, was giving me trouble,I had brought that off the truck years ago, so for about $6.00 postage, cornwell warrantied both of them. I got another cornwell that time too, for a buck or two, but it was the kind you hip a hole with a bunch, or use a spanner wrench, and I cleaned it up, and oli-greased it, it was fine.

I am even leaving the typos, that is not me, I think they ,make *Me* look Dumb.
I had to take my disability, so i wasn't able to buy the new Road king I was wanting, or the House I was wantging to buy before I got sick, but I was starting to be happy, and enjoying my retirement fooling around with wood work, a little (Damm little .....LOL) metal work, and buying and restoring power and hand tools. And fooling with mt tread mill motors putting them on to power tools. *I just got another Tread mill at Good will ,said As Is,
but yesterday and the day before, i stripped it down, and tested the motor, Smooth as silk it is.
I will have to start a thread about the board, I have never seen it, before.
No, it's not your typical MC-60. not a little Merrimac either, I don't know.

I need to stay positive I know.

Today was an estate sale and a friday yard sale.

I got to the ES 30min early for numbers, which is usually late, and got #1. I'm begining to think that it's a cursed number for me. I was looking forward to digging elbow deep in the workbench to see what I could find, but we were told that the basement was closed due to the fact that the ceiling was too low for a crowd. They brought some of it up and put it out on the back porch, but that just made me wonder what was left behind. They planned on bringing the rest up a little at a time over the weekend. REALLY ?!? I'm not running back and forth all weekend. (alright, I might make one more trip if I'm in the area)

Today's Haul from two estate sales.

The 3/8" ratchet is a S&K with a 7/16" Snap-on socket. The 1/4" is a NOS True Test. The large plane is a #6 Stanley in very good condition, the smaller one is a Keen Kutter K3C, a Bedrock in disquise. Two of the hatchets are Plumb.
