Weather has been bad all weekend so only hit 2 garage sales. Neither had tools but I did score this.

T4 it's unanimus; yousuck...

Original, that is a nice find! I have those (no box) from back in the day, but mine is very well read. ( I read the whole thing many times before I ever got out of High School...)

Huge fan, I Have the Red leather-bound edition and read it to the kids in the evenings when they were in grade school. All of us love the books and the movies. (Youngest Daughter LOVES the Hobbit movies and the one elf loving dwarf...)

Little time at the flea market today, but managed to save a few dollars more of stuff I don't need, too.

pics 1-3: all for $11
Bell System tools, a heavy duty screwdriver and a hammer
pair of Craftsman punches
lonely Craftsman socket
Xcelite nutdriver
no-name DOE wrench
really neat 4-in-1 screwdriver and bottle opener, marked "WELFARE FUND DONOR, GOOD LUCK, VFW", with a clover leaf. Cool!

pic 4: 6 small bottles of US military gun grease, usually stored in the buttstocks of the M1 Garand and M1 carbine, all for 75 cents.

pic 5: $4
pair of classic VW maintenance books, always a welcome addition to the bookshelf

Love that screwdriver beatcad. Possibly a test or practice for an apprentice blacksmith.

Well back at it again with another load.
Lots of snap-on and other quality brands. Paid $700 for everything. There are 3 more boxes of lesser quality stuff as well.

Thanks. I already have a set, but I've never seen a set this old so I had to grab it. I too remember reading these many times back in school.

I went to an estate sale yesterday with $10 in my pockets - poor planning I know!

I saw a set of Proto 3/8 drive metrics sockets in a nice tray/carrier thingie and grabbed it. There were lots of little things that I might have grabbed if I was flush with cash but wasn't.

I found the guy doing prices and he looks at them - I say they are Proto - he has a blank look and say $5.00. Sold!

I went back for the 2# O.H.I. Mannen hammer - is this a drilling hammer? - for $2 (was priced $3.00).

I used the hammer within the hour to pull 2 cap stones that were deteriorating in my driveway steps.

Cheers

Jim

Outlaw and Jake: thanks so much. I am really looking forward to the after as well.

I am going to have to replace every bolt and shaft I think but all the irreplaceable bits are there. So what are the recommended soaks to free stuff up. Diesel, kerosene, ATF,????

Many swear by an ATF/Acetone mix; only it doesn't really ever stay mixed. So shake well before using. The theory is the solvent helps carry the ATV to where it's needed.

Over the counter, Kroil seems to be the best, but it's pricey.

I've had better luck with PB blaster that liquid wrench.

If its all cast/iron steel can you soak it in an Etank?

Jeremy - Soak the parts in a bucket of Simple Green for a few days to a week, and periodically scrub them with a nylon laundry brush. It will degrease the parts and soften the paint so that it nearly falls off on it's own.

Then soak the parts in a bucket of EvapoRust or Vinegar to clean them down to bare metal. After that, a quick light wire wheeling will get them ready for paint.

It will take more time than standing at a wire wheel for hours, but it will require a lot less elbow grease.

SG will sometimes attack aluminum... Not sure what it's reaction might be to Pot metal.
It IS a reactive to some things, so some testing might be in order...

Not exactly a garage sale, but a friend/relative works for a metallurgical think tank type business and he's been busy cleaning out some of their storage units. I posted a week or two about some steel he brought me, and he's brought me about 500# of 12" x 12" steel plate hunks, two milk crates of steel bar pieces, even some heavy copper plate pieces, which have already made great heat sinks for welding sheet metal.

Well today, he called and said they had priced all of the stuff in the storage units, so I met him over there.

Here is what I came home with:
Miller Filtair 130 welding fume extractor/filter. In excellent condition, no hose or hood, but I got it for only $200
i-D7HGDZR-M.jpg

Portable, folding welding table ($20):
i-TjPGgc2-M.jpg

Two 4' x 7' welding screens, with steel tube frames - one on wheels ($10 each):
i-PgG8Zp3-M.jpg

Parallel plate screw lift - about 12" square ($20):
i-CZHtXBR-M.jpg

A box of pieces of UniStrut, lengths vary from 24" to 30" with some brackets and spring nuts included ($10):
i-k9KG3St-M.jpg

And a couple of 1" thick 8" x 6" copper plates.

I may sell the fume extractor, or I may rig up a hanging hose/small hood setup to use on my main welding table.
I plan to modify the welding screens by cutting up the frames and making a four-section folding screen frame that the screens will attach to.

It IS a mild acid so some testing might be in order...

It's actually a mild alkaline which is why some of the formulas are not recommend for extended aluminum contact as alkalines will attack aluminum and

Thanks outlaw. I have sprayed it down quite a bit with PB blaster. I don't think an e-tank will work there is too much pot metal on what's there.

Put your favorite penetrating oil on the threads and let it soak for a few days. Then use an impact to gently remove the threaded fasteners. After you get each part broken down you can then attack the individual pieces as suitable for their respective material.

Wow. Thanks Jake, Outlaw, and Z. It's great how a cool old tool brings out everyone's help. I am going to try and break it all down to individual parts first. Unfortunately it sat outside for possible years. I sprayed it all down with PB blaster for now. I will lay a few rags soaked in the stuff probably tomorrow and once it is been there for a few days maybe I can get a few things apart. The idler wheel is free and spins but it's tension assembly is seized. The drive shaft is seized in its bearings but I was already able to break a few fasteners loose and the drive pulley spins on the shaft. It is just getting that shaft out that will be the trick.

It is becoming apparent that I will have to start a thread on this tool. Thanks as always for the help and advice everyone.

Hmmm, your right. I can't recall where I got the acidic idea, but that's wrong...

Post corrected, and thanks for the correction.

Picked up this Nye Bench and post vise made in 1942 (I think) for $0.75 USD the other day. Seems to have been lightly used and mostly surface rust.
Picture is halfway through disassembly.

I'm currently on vacation so I've been really busy doing nothing:lol: but I had a chance to duck out in the rain on Saturday for a small farm house garage sale

It's not a huge haul but for the 4 dollars I spent, I'm not gonna complain

Proto 1312-P ball peen hammer in exc condition
2 P&C drift/taper punches
Forgecraft carbon steel knife

For those that have to ask, the 2 stones are Petosky stones and came from the bay in front of our house. That should give an idea as to where I am in Michigan

Finally did a little picking today ;) Stop number... 3 or 4 got some quality tools...

$80. total. for everything. plus a Bonney crowsfoot set that I left behind... luckily this is the second time I've picked there and know them fairly well, they're aware I left it and I'll pick it up some point this week.

son of a retired contractor, who was a second generation contractor in the same location, and great grandpa had a business there first. So, 3 generations of guys who broke one socket and said screw it, and went out and bought another set have been there. Son hit me up last week saying the property is pending sale and they need to clean out, told him I'd be over today. Probably going to buy the mother load of sockets off them this week... there's a pile in every corner, literally, in this 3 story barn.

Also if anyone needs a stationary belt / disc sander, they have 8... maybe more.

That buff is way too large for a 1/2hp machine. What belt / disk sanders did they have?

Well, it must have been Plomb/Proto LA day at a flea market I found today. Also found a snap on box cutter and a big Vlcheck BP hammer head. I've never seen any of their tools spelled "Velcheck" instead of "Vlcheck," thought it was kind of interesting. $8 for everything.
