I stopped by a estate sale that was just down the street from my house this morning and saw this waiting for me.

I never owned one and thought why not try it out.

Been hitting yard sales for the past few weekends with no luck till today. Old guy retiring and dumping off everything. .................. Got a 4 1/2" post vise for $25, ..............

DSC_6127.jpg

Around here, that would go for 3 to 4 times that amount. You ****, great score.

Short stop list this week, (no clue why... Maybe Schools out adn everybody went on VACA? :dunno:

Except for a bunk bed ladder for my youngest and her loft bed (No pic $5...) Absolutely NOTHING...

The only saving grace was this from a CL ad: $40 as it was frozen (screw wouldn't turn for them) but I got it to budge, and knew it shouldn't be too tough to get it apart. 3-1/2" jaws the jaws are in pretty good shape so should clean up nice.

As found other than I shot it with PB blaster

Outlaw:

Great pick up on that Vise.

Glad you were able to get that "unfrozen" fairly quickly.

Madison, that looks like it has the marine ply jaws instead of the particle board jaws; True? if the working face double thickness or single?

Great score in either case!

I know it's not particle board for sure, but it's a nice work surface for sure! What is the thickness of a single and double?

Well.......I may be too stupid to post pictures on here but I was smart enough to buy 4 Jorgensen 4" c clamps and a very nice 1/4" Snap On ratchet for $5 yesterday.

They just cut a 1" or so strip of the ply and glue/screw that to the underside where the jaws meet. if your asking then almost certainly its just the single thickness, of the ply.

Got this PLOMB WF38 (Wright field) ratchet today and when I found it I gave it a few clicks in one direction and then checked to see if it changed directions, which it did.....I didn't noticed any slippage.
I also think the reversing lever is backwards/flipped up instead of down

When I got home and took it apart to start cleaning it.....I found it had several broken teeth!

I'm sure with these WF series tools (1942-1945) that finding a repair kit is impossible.

Here are some pic anyways.....I was really lookin' forward to cleaning this one up.

Anyone need it for parts?

Went to an auction this morning and won this toolbox for 13 dollars. I took all the drawers out, but I could not find any markings or date stamp anywhere on the box. I'm thinking that it is a waterloo box, maybe from the eighties. Outside of the crappy paint job box is in great condition. A couple of very small dings in the back is all. Original color was orange. As a bonus, it had a Snap-On CT4C continuity tester in the bottom drawer.

Jim, I'd make a guess that the std Proto 5449 gear-1/2 drive would fit? If you have one its an easy test to make...

Went back to the honey hole from yesterday this morning. I wasn't sure they'd be open due to pouring rain and the ad was pulled from CL last night. I went anyway just to see if they would be open. I wanted to see if they'd sell me just the drawers from the Cman workstation that was stuck under a sagging bench.

Instead of selling just the drawers, the son came over and Hulked the bench up off the box so I could pull it out. I also grabbed a large pair of General dividers.

The drawers will get added to the workstation in my shop, and the rest will get parted out, or scrapped.

I offered $20 for both pieces, and the woman running things said "give me $10". Your wish is my command. :bounce:

So have to take the youngest back to College for summer session, (she's on track to finish 4 years in three...) and we plan to stop at that town's Flea market. I also found one estate sale, so we will see how that goes for a father's day...

I tried to buy a complete set up like that once. The seller was looking for 3k for it. I had to decline her (the widow) generous offer.

You did really really well. Thinking of going into clock repair now?

I hit the same honey hole JakeMac did, about 10 minutes after he left. SWMBO skimmed the entire house before I was even three steps into the garage. She retreated to the truck with a book, happy to wait on me while I spent another 45 minutes going through the piles (I love that woman!).

I piled up a variety of stuff I don't really need, but thought had value. As usual, I took many things I otherwise wouldn't have looked at twice, thanks to my ongoing GJ advanced degree in vintage tools.

Thanks to BJ42LX, I now twitch when I find forged C-clamps and gather them up. I found 20 today. The big ones are three Wiltons and one Williams. The smaller ones are all Cincinnati Tool Co Super Jrs.

I only had time for one GS stop Friday on the way home from work. No tools as such to be found but I did pick up a few other items. Army canteen pouch, a military gun cleaning kit, a pistol cleaning kit, a bunch of small Tootsietoy and one Buddy L toy trucks. And, a really cool Colt Law Enforcement Products hat. $20 for all.

Nice haul BBomber.
Yup, you've got a keeper there. (not talking about the tools)

Most of those clamps came out of the Cman drawers that I got earlier. They're not my style, but I was hoping you'd grab them. I missed the adjustable spud wrench, good eye. I had all those indicators and boom mounts in my hands on both days I was there, but waffled back and forth on them. In the end I left them behind. I'm not sure why. It must be that I knew you'd be batting clean-up.

Yup, for sure! Her only rules are 1) gotta have a caffeinated beverage before sale-ing, and 2) anything I buy stays in the garage. Oh and 3) anything she finds goes on my pile for the final negotiation.

Glad you got the drawers you were after. Not sure what I'll do with all these great finds. My kids are starting to wonder about me...

I got a call from a co-worker who was a garage sale who knew I was looking for an old vise. She picked up this nice craftsman vise for $20. It has no cracks, welds or large damage. The swivel pin is slightly bent but I will fix that when I repaint. Who made this vise and how old is it?

Wow you guys er just knocking it out of the park!

Mike/JM (Whoops!)

Today sucked, I went nowhere NEAR any sales: We started about 1 hour late to take my youngest to that collage summer session; (I was told she wasted to get there EARLY...) the Effing school as usual screwed a 20 min "unload and move into the dorms quick! into 2-1/2 hour waiting ordeal, so we missed the Yard sale, Estate sale and Fleamarket I had lined up- Happy Father's day. I was pissed.

The rest of the way seemed to follow suit. :dunno:

Smokes, that vise is probably about 1940-42 or so. Made either by Reed or Rock island, as both companies made identical vises according to samples that have been found.

I got a call from a co-worker who was a garage sale who knew I was looking for an old vise. She picked up this nice craftsman vise for $20. It has no cracks, welds or large damage. The swivel pin is slightly bent but I will fix that when I repaint. Who made this vise and how old is it?

Smoke that vise was made by rock island for craftsman. You will need to look at Outlaws craftsman vise thread for exact dates. But I think it was late 1930's-early 1940's.

Here is the link to outlaws thread for craftsman vise id.

Outlaw you are the expert so I differ to you, but I thought the reed ones had fixed jaws, my 5186 did, and the Rock Islands had removable jaws. :dunno:
