Hit up estate sales and garage sales today with very little to show for it. One estate sale in an older neighborhood was first on my list because it said " a garage full of items". It was full alright. Full of dollar store Christmas ****. Not even a screwdriver in sight. My wife scored on all kinds of art supplies and Pyrex dishes she collects. I got a pocket knife. Oh well, its a nice pocket knife and the wife is happy.

Thanks again Guys! it was an interesting day for sure; the book, not one but two Plvmb drivers (I think I had one or two before that...), the Saw was nice (straight too, but could use sharpening), the Marbles rod, steam engine and Telegraph key, not to mention the SK breaker/extension! Very diverse stuff!

Today looks like a clean up day; nothing on the books...

I'm seeing a lot of great stuff posted this weekend, good job guys.

I did 3 flea markets this morning. My hip is killing me from all the walking.
I only scored at 1 FM though, and not much. Between 3 vendors I ended up spending $8.

Williams Superrench #1173 1-1/4" combo wrench (some monkey used the edge as a hammer)
Bonney #1160 3/8" combo wrench (Bonaloy)
Gray RB222 #2 Robertson driver (stamped 1970) (My first Gray tool. :rocker: )
Stanley plywood carry handle (I swore I'd never buy one of these stupid gimmicky things, but last week I had to move 10 sheets of 3/4" plywood in the heat. I'm out of shape, it was cheap)

Pretty lean day, lots of rain and most of the sales I wanted to hit didn't even set up. I did manage a few deals.

A half box of 8D ring shank nails for my Hitachi air nailer. These are going to hold on the sheeting in my new shop next spring.

A nice lil hand dolly- for panel work

2 - 10" pipe wrench's ... stillson style

Justen impact driver

Sargent pliers. "Bernards Parallel Action Pliers Sold to jewelers. Also used to be use (LONG time ago) in surgery to push pins in with that slot in the center. Pins and plaster technique. Then the pin would be shortened after the plaster set over it with the cutter on the side." This is what a friend told me about them.

Irwin expandable bit for a brace but the brace chuck was cut off.

Frey Co. Brass nesting precision screw driver set

Smith & Hemenway Giant No. 1 nail puller. These worked very well on square nail... not so much on the round ones. But too cool to let go to scrap. She'll hang out on the wall of the new shop

$30.00 bucks for every thing. The nails cost more than that.

Topop101, what issues have you had using that nail puller on round nails? I have a couple of similar slide hammer pullers and they work great for me, sometimes they're the only thing I've got that will extract a stubborn nail. Just curious.

The garage sales around me just pure ****. Never tools only baby clothes and other junk.

They're all that way if you drive around aimlessly looking for random signs. They key is to target the ones you go to based on keyword searches in the ads and then form a "flight plan".

The neighborhood demographics also make a difference.

You can still strike out, but it's better then the alternative.

Garage sales:

After I got home I opened the Autobiography and noted something written inside. No big deal right? People often do that with a gift book: Only this is Eddie Rickenbacker's Inscription and dated Signature! I found ink on the inside of the cover from when it was closed, and I googled his signature and this appears to be the real deal! I actually gasped when I saw it was his signature initially.

My brother had that exact same engine. Brings back fond memories of when they still made toys that could kill a kid. :D

Yeah, pretty cool to be sure but it's hard to imagine a time when the corporate legal department would let a company sell a toy that involved fire and live steam. What could possibly go wrong? :D

My dad has one of those steam engines that he got as a boy. Every year or two we'd talk him into dragging it out and setting it up. I believe his took some kind of solid fuel pellets but he didn't have any so he made a little pan out of aluminum foil, filled it with denatured alcohol, and slid it into the firebox. It seemed to work ok that way. He had a variety of accessories for it including a little sawmill. What a great toy.

These apparently only go about 15 PSI, so not too bad. Yes the fuel is esbit tablets like the military used for "portable stoves" for the canteen cup and the like. this model takes 2 of the size Jensen sells, and the larger ones take 3. I need the fuel tray, some fuel, and a new relief valve for this one as the spring disintegrated. Also, the PO used regular water not distilled so it has deposits, built up...

That's pretty funny about the Esbit tablets, I'm pretty sure my dad has a bunch of those around from his Army C rations, he never throws anything away. Or maybe those are Trioxane, not sure. Ironic that he probably had a workable solid fuel all along...

Hit the flea market today.

Not much in the way of tools, 'cept one guy that must have thought all his stuff was made of gold. ;) Even with ALL the **** I've got....projects up the *** I need to complete...I really, really needed to buy these. It was about 75 degrees this morning so it must have been the chill in the air that drew me to them. :eyecrazy:

I really need to seek some professional help...:lol_hitti

Early searching leads me to think there are 40's or maybe a little earlier...:dunno: Apparently not that rare. The poles maybe a little more so. What the heck I'm going to do with them I have no clue. The bindings need some help as they are pretty rusty and the poles need some work in the basket area. Oh well, what's another 5 dollars.

You gotta be persistent, finding the good stuff is more luck than skill!

Actually, with some skill you can make your luck...

Sales can be hit or miss, no matter how much prep you do.
But your chances can be increased with some work. You don't hunt a deer by stepping into the trees and shooting in a random direction. You need to stalk it.

It's the same with sales. You need to scout the area. Determine where the quarry is likely to be. And then set up your ambush.

I check CL each day of the week to see if there are any sales coming up that might be interesting. Then I check the location, so I know if I can make it out there, and if the area is likely to have what I'm looking for (if it's a condo, it's much less likely). The night before, I print out the ads (with map) of all the sales I want to try, and sort them by location and start time. I plan out a route to maximize my chances of getting to the sales at the earliest time so I don't miss out on the interesting items.

It can be tricky, the ads can lie (or be misleading), leading to false trails, backtracking, and disappointment.

Just remember, it's the Hunt that's important, not the kill.

Maybe you should check out estate sales. That's where I find my best bargains.

In fact, there's one going on right in your town until 6 PM today. The best stuff is usually gone, but you can also get some outrageous deals on the leftovers.

Happy hunting!

Those are pre-WWII Nordic style skis. After the 1932 winter Olympics in Lake Placid NY, skiing became popular in the US. Those skis were used with low cut leather ski boots that had a square toe that fit the toe box and grooved heels that the cable binding engaged. It was possible to lift the heel, so they weren't very good for downhill or alpine skiing. The large baskets on the poles were for more support in deep snow. My parents had 2 pairs of these.

Same here, so I never go to garage sales. I started going to estate tag sales about ten year s ago and follow the professionals exclusively. I'm on each one's e-mail list so I know late Tuesday what's listed for Friday.

I had a very good last-day half-off venture on Friday. I would love to post pictures but my anti-virus software stops all action I take to try to upload pictures to Photobucket. I'll give two examples though - Very large Starrett calipers $6.00 and a NOS in-the-wooden-box tap & die set for $6.00 also.

Now, here's the good part - as a result of my working with the dealers for that long and establishing a a good relationship, I've been asked to help set up a very large sale, one with a large number of tools, tomorrow morning for the upcoming weekend. The procedure is to get everything displayed and priced for pictures Tuesday afternoon. I expect that there will be tools seen Monday that won't appear in the pictures Tuesday.:evil::evil:

I guess every area if different.

I've all but given up on estate sales if they're run by professionals. If I want to pay Ebay prices I'll stay at home and shop on Ebay.

However private estate sales run by the immediate family can be fantastic.

You just need to get to know your area and see what works best.

Pretty much this: some GS are great, some (most?) ****, same with Estate sales one of my "better" estate sale pros got a new guy in the garage. end of the second day most things were left... He was asking Eprey prices. Make them reasonable and the place gets empty... And that is the companies JOB is to empty the place... (Hence all the 1/2 off (or more) days on the last day...

One thing with the "pros" if they won't deal, set it down and tell them "you want this more than I do." Eventually they get it.

Even Privately run Estate sales are hit or miss, but generally they are there to clear it out...

The key is not to waste time & gas on junk, and cruising guarantees that. Research and plan a route, if something looks good along the way, well, that is a Target of opportunity... (TOO)

Once thing I've leaned however is to look PAST all the effing baby clothes and kids toys, are there tubs or boxes of "stuff" out? any "junk" hanging out? I'll stop and take a quick look. I've gotten some pretty good scores that way... :pimpflash

Hi Folks: This isn't exactly related to Garage Sales but I think you all have the most experience identifying tools. A fellow member posted requesting help identifying a screw driver and an old Power Craft box wrench. Please check out thread

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5002557#post5002557

to see if you can help to with ID. In regard to the Power Craft wrench he is looking for more like the one he has so he can complete a set. Thanks for your help.

I was able to move the picture with Outlaws help. Thanks Outlaw!

Anyone able to positively ID the screwdriver or have any like it. Some of the posters are leaning Proto; I think they are right.

Thanks for any/all help.

Hit up a few sales with some finds but nothing too spectacular to post about. But I did finally get a Lincoln SA200! Friend of a friend deal and got it for an excellent price. Needs a tune-up and a battery but otherwise it's a solid machine. Also came with a set of leads.

I'll put it this way: I'd put that in my Plvmb/Proto collection without hesitation.

Picked this Power Mig 215 up on CL for 500 dollars last weekend. I have been looking for an affordable welder to run 0.45 wire in for sometime. Welder is in really good condition. Doesn't look like it has been used very much at all.I have a smaller 175 welder that I will use just for sheet metal work.

My line most recently when negotiating has been "I like it but I don't really need it."

A few techniques I learned on American Pickers actually work well at some estate sales. One is bundling - make a pile then ask for a price. You can usually get a better deal than piece meal. Another is paying a higher price for an item up front and getting a better price on subsequent items.

Company-run sales where they tag prices on stuff usually won't bargain on the first day. But if you can find smalls without price tags, you can still get good deals on day one.

Good haul, you will like it. I have a Power Mig 255 that I got from a pawn shop and it is a great welder.
