Got a $40 German made HEUER DRP 5" vise. It's a very unique design. The dynamic jaw is actually in the back and moves back when you open it. It kind of has 2 slides as the main screw is enclosed in the cylinder.



Got a free lawn mower on my way home from getting ice cream with the family. I saw into the side of the road on the way there, and it was still there so I grabbed it. The gas and oil caps are missing and the front wheel axle is half unattached. Hopefully the engine is fine and I can get into running.

The DRP means it's probably pre-WWII. Stands for Deutsches Reichs Patente.

Post war would be DBP, Deutsches Bundes Patente.

Went to an estate sale this past weekend and bumped into 2 fellow GJ members. We all had a great time! I got there a bit late and ended up with a few nice things but mostly sloppy seconds. The 2 pros were there early and I think I bumped into them on their second go around. They said a modest sized Craftsman toolbox was full of Snap-On, mostly unused. I found a few things in there but is was pretty much cleaned out, yet even later, on a 5th or 6th pass, one GJ guy still pulled out some gems that somehow we all missed! He pulled out a set of brand new vintage Snap-On ignition wrenches.

Here is my haul for $115. It included a big bucket of Oxi-Clean that my wife threw in.

First Pic: Left side all pretty new Snap-On and USA BluePoint some still in sealed bags. Dates are in the mid 80's. Clear handle mini screwdrivers, a tiny 4-5" Snap-On slip joint pliers at the top. The channel-lock type Snap-On pliers in the middle had an unbelieveable fine finish to them.

On the right, a ton of nice Kleins, Protos, and Xcelites, most in new condition.

Last pic: Hopefully I can make my money back selling the Ridgid pipe threaders. New rosewood Craftsman sliding T bevel, Japanese HIT cable cutter.

Went to buy a black and decker 74 bench grinder but it was not in good shape. It had bent left side guards and 1/4 of the right guard was cut off. So I passed and asked what else was for sale. He didn't mention it but I saw this palmgren on the bench and asked if it was for sale. He said yea. Then he asked if I also wanted a woodworker's vise. So I got both of these for $60
Palmgren AV-24-1 tilt vise with swivel base. 4" jaws. Has a few drill holes but this is a nice vise.

And a Wilton woodworkers vise.

Good finds all.
Saturday's flea finds here. Some nice older wrenches mostly, including a VERY heavy duty EASCO 1-3/8". Like new Wright and Plomb. Craftsman, Herbrand(Bonney made I assume), S-K, Blue Point. Some rusty gold as well, Snap On, New Britain, Cornwell,Plomb.Williams Pliers. A couple 1/2" x 1/2" extensions.

Wizard 1/2" ratchet to complete my set of three drive sizes. S-K 3/8 rat.

Also a strange wedge type tool, looks like a stud remover. Stamped Aberdeen Knock-Out. Anyone know more on this piece?

SHADOW I don't know who was making the C series but from what I know of it , it was started before sears tool line was called "CRAFTSMAN" Which was 1927. So some consider the BE series to be the first line labeled Craftsman and the same year within months the H series. The design was pat in 1930 and produced 30-31 and beyond . Both ratchets look very similar and it's thought that the BE was first , made by NB and because of high demand they had husky make the H to meet the demand. If it was a FAT H or rounded H then it would more likely have been Hinsdale made.

But without sears saying so or actual catalog info it's all just speculation and WAG's . Either way when I find them old ones I buy them . I hope I get to stick around and see what Craftsman puts out for the 100 year anniversary . Maybe I'll set my grandsons up with a set ! 2027

Nice wood vise. I'm working on 3 for a guy right now . I'll post them up when I get them done to give you some idea's. The one's I'm doing all have to be snap-on red though. It's what was ordered. Hopefully this weekend

Picked up a few things from an online auction today and to keep a posting within reason, I'm making two posts as I have a lot of pics.

First, the drills and screwdriver package.





That's a nice MF chest drill.





Push button and reposition the drive gear for change of speed - slick!





Then there was a small toolbox with a number of files, a few small vintage C clamps, and three ball peen hammers.





Files were wrapped in paper - protects the teeth but can hold moisture and cause rust, which was minor. All American made files in good condition.





Then several other containers of machinist tools.




















Finally, an old Scripto mechanical pencil. It's been decades since I've see one. Can anyone identify the clip?

yelp. read the same stuff. tons more out there as well. some contradicts others on dates and makers. But for sure there was an overlap of the "C" series. 27-30 most likely, maybe longer.

An old collector I visit with from time to time just says that since the C was already in production he didn't consider it the first one made as Craftsman. I tend to agree with his line of thought. The BE being the first made to order even thought they sold the same thing as a NB. It's all opinion until a catalog shows up.

I saw an ad on CL Monday for some tools and I could tell it was a bunch of stuff piled up in a garage. No prices listed but it said come take a look. I couldn't get there until tonight and a good deal of it had been picked through but I was mainly looking for some sockets and some hammers.

I always head out to these kinds of things with 1 or 2 of those 18 gallon totes with a lid. I feel them out with prices on a few bigger items and if they seem reasonable I ask if I can just fill up a tub and we work out a price when I'm done picking through. Today was no different.

I found the hammers and sockets I went for and a good amount of other stuff that I managed to fit in my tub. When we were all done I asked what the damage was and they asked me what I thought was fair. I said $100. They said $200. I told them to pick out however much they needed to get me back down to $100. Then I remembered I had 12 boxes of framing nails in my car that I picked up at HD for a penny each. I happened to see a gun for those nails in the garage while I was looking so I offered a trade on the nails. We went back and forth a bit and I ended up giving up 6 penny boxes of nails and $140 cash for everything.

The 1/2" ratchet is SO and the big combination wrench is a Proto. Almost all of the pliers are Vise Grip and the little red box is Mac Tools. The air tools are Blue Point, SO, and Mac. I separated the sockets into keep and sell and the first bag is all Craftsman USA, Williams, SK, or SO. The sell bag is unmarked or Stanley or stuff made in Taiwan.

It wasn't the best deal I've gotten but I left very happy.

False modesty - you **** for the air tools alone. Great deals - you could easily double your money with a few resales.

That stand looks just like the craftsman stand that my dad had his block grinder on. My brother got the grinder and stand when we went thru dads stuff. But I remember the stand.

Yes it's a craftsman grinder stand. I already have 2 of them. I also owned another one which I sold. For $25 I had to say yes.

Thanks. The grinder does look pretty cool. I'm going to give it a quick clean, de-rust the plate around the switch, and new cord. I think the bearings are ok. And then I will probably want to keep it instead of selling it. Lol. I only bought this for the stand.

I got stuck at the house this morning waiting for a contractor to come by to do an estimate. He was late, of course.

Once he left I was able to get to an estate sale just before they closed for the day. The prices were a little high and non-negotiable until tomorrow. The previous owner was a machinist at a boat yard. Almost all the tools that were left had inventory numbers etched in. A few had names. All were in "well used" condition. Name brands were SnapOn, Williams, Proto, BluePoint, Craftsman, and other lesser names. A few machinist tools were left, but the toolbox and tools was already gone. Everything else was a hodge-podge of tailings. There was a 5" swiveling Yost vise in rough shape (but easily salvageable) bolted to the bench that they wanted $50 for. Yost isn't my brand, so I left it behind (sorry guys ).

Well I had a rare Estate Sale Friday as I left a bit early (but worked a ton of extra hours this week and I was at work by 6 AM today, so not THAT early...)

(And I missed another that closed by 1... )

So ten bucks got me: A Circle H Craftsman Long C 1/2" Ratchet (Pat. Pend. Hmm going to have to see if any HAVE the patents...), 5" ext, 7/8 Duro chrome Deep socket, Old BlackHawk 31/32 socket, 2 Plvmb Combos, NOS Weller tips, Boker 4" ign pliers, and an antenna spring.

Left behind: (WAY OVER Priced but maybe tomorrow...) Craftsman Block grinder, a Wilton vise, but it's the Channel type slide do not a bullet, a Crastsman Vise, the common U slide type, and a lot of misc stuff...

The unmarked stuff was quite reasonable.

Well both my 1/2" drive long C ratchets and a "None Better" version say "Pat. Pend."

The two 3/8 drives don't and don't mention a patent at all.

That extension is unmarked except for "3216"

Slim pickings today.

First, a boatload of smaller files - a vinegar bath and scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush will yield some very good usable files - Nicholson, Grobet and others.





Found in the box of files, but contributing nothing whatsoever.





My estate sale dealer knows that I collect Blue Grass tools, so he sets those aside for me.

Finally, a 13 oz Blue Grass claw hammer in nice condition.

Six bucks actually seems a little high for a BPH to me, but I've never seen a Plumb logo with leader under it like that. Also, with the original handle? I probably would've done $6.

I've never heard of Blue Grass tools before this post of yours. I'm assuming they're an old manufacturer that's not around anymore. If so, that's a pretty sweet find for how nice the condition of that hammer is. I'm also a sucker for big stamps, so, nice find!

On Friday (8/21/15), hit a few yard sales and got the following.

Pic 1 & 2 Rolling tool cart that I believe is homemade and used by a worker at the Rockwell Axle Plant in Newark OH

Pic 3 & 4 Couple of C&O RY oiler cans used by the railroad during the time that journal boxes and journal bearings were used. Passed on to me by my Dad.

Pic 5 & 6 Small handled pick/mattock and when cleaned up, saw it said "US PLUMB 1944" Read that they were used by the Army & Marines during WW2 as a military landing tool. Info says they are pretty common, but first one that I've run into.

Pic 7 4 amp 6/12 volt battery charger by Schauer Model A7612, a small cleaver by Utica Superedge and draw knife by Greenlee of Rockford IL
