damn! you guys are pulling some great stuff.

today i drove past a bunch of yard sales that were nothing but clothes and kids toys. booo.
and a community sale that was just lame.
i did stop at a yard sale on my way home(about 2 blocks from home).
guy had a row of 4 bicycles. 3 girl bikes and one boy bike.
his pricing was all wrong.
he wanted 20 bucks each for the 2 i was looking at. i didnt get the chance to talk him down. he said take the 2 for 30 clams.

Joe, looks like two bench grinders and one pedestal grinder with lighted eye shields, there is a 14" band saw back there too. Looks like a good pick, good luck!

I went out looking today. Found a Colombian vise but it's been repaired and might not be a great buy after all.

Can't really tell the number from the stamp. 604 or 504?

The parts that's welded seems fine. It's all solid. It's bigger than my current Reed vise so I snagged it. Paid $35

I also grabbed a couple of files both US Nicholson.

and a Plomb ball peen hammer.

There was a C-man crown 10" sander/polisher that looked pretty cool. Might go back tomorrow for it.

I hit 2 estates and 5 garage sales with little SuKcess . Then I went to the biggest auction in this area for 2 years or more. Running 2 rings and selling a massive collection it was a good day. Bids were high and deals were hard to come by because some real big spenders were on hand. I think at least 2 guys had to be in the 10K range...:wtf:. I on the other hand stayed well below that at 191.00 for the day.
Guys I just got way too much stuff to list each item so I'm gona keep it general and hit some high points.
Thorsen 1/2 set
S-K sae and metric 3/8 set
Broad axe
12 lb bad *** hammer
Heller file holder w/ all 5 files new in the box
A. Winterhagen bench clamp Vise that looks like a post vise but it has 2-1/4" jaws
several Stanley , Keen Kutter, Craftsman , Bernards tools. As well as Butcher bros. and Richards bros and sons from the 1800's Sheffield , England

More pictures of that bad *** hammer!

The Williams 1161 is a 7/16".
I know because it's one of the holes in my set.

Oh, I was just curious because I happened to have found a 3/4" today. Two down (1/2 and 3/4), how ever many more to go! Can you give me the respective list of item numbers and sizes?

Okay, I'll post today's acquisitions today and provide a little more detail about tomorrow. Have you noticed sometimes things repeat themselves, or come in threes? Today was like that as I made the rounds of a few Craigslist sales.

It started innocently enough. A yard sale just down the road with "tools" in the ad. The driveway was full of typical non-tool debris but yielded this gem next in the electronics section: a 3 Amp, 13.5V Radio Shack power supply with a 12V cigarette lighter adapter. It looks brand new. I asked for a price, got the "I don't even know what that is" answer and walked away with it for $2. I figured I'd have a backup for my new e-bath.

Next stop was unplanned - saw an estate sale sign on the way to another C-list sale and dropped in. No tool stuff here either ("it's all up at the house in Maine & too heavy to move") but I did get a Chinese-made Crosley record player in pristine condition for $7, a LamsonSharp stainless grill set for $5, and a Homelite gas leaf blower for $7. The guy said it needs a new fuel line.

At the next stop, I dug through a garage that had already been picked and came up with the following for $50.

Another 12V power supply - this one a vintage Electro with a roached power cord - this is things happening in threes

My last planned stop of the day was a multi-family sale with the usual stuff we don't want. I finally found the one small table with the "TOOLS!!!" There was a Craftsman 70ss/80s circular saw and a few other items along with some "Whole box for $5" boxes. I fished out a Cincinnati Tool Co butterfly c-clamp for a buck. I spotted another unusual clamp in a bundled box and decided to grab it. Here's what I got:

Sargent & Co "14" c-clamp, a bit tweaked but wicked-cool gull-wing screw
Weed digger
Xcelite nut driver (old, says "Orchard Park, NJ" instead of Made in USA)
Hyde scraper
M. Klein & Sons wire strippers
Plastic spring clamp
Plastic holster
Tube of bath & kitchen caulk
12 pounds of assorted framing, finishing and brad nails

After paying my $6 tab to the sweet old lady behind the table, I was turning to leave when she said "Oh, please take this little plastic parts organizer. I'm trying to move my husband's stuff along." I said no thanks but asked if she had many other tools to sell.

She said "Oh, yes. They're all down on those signs at the end of the driveway." Signs?!?! I walked down and beheld a dozen photos of large, serious shop equipment, like an oscillating sander, a Delta bandsaw, a scroll saw, a large metal lathe and *ding ding* a belt/disc sander! I've been looking for one of these for several weeks, so I bargained with the lady and SIL for a price of $45. The tools were at the lady's house a few miles away, so directions and phone call to the son at the house and off I went.

I realized this was going to be special - potentially access to an estate that was not open to the general public!! I was greeted by "Al" upon arrival and shown to the basement. There I found the pictured tools, and a basement mostly devoid of the small hand tools you'd normally expect in such a place. "Gone to the y-ah-d sales," Al said. Well, I found the sander--it turned out to be a Taiwan import from the late 80s.

2dc52403b5aa4808d4cd5329528ff9c7.jpg

I bought it anyway, because when I turned around, I saw this (cue the heavenly choir):

2b949e195932f94c1c0081f09cd0f65d.jpg
d33bd9521330d9255dec490982d08528.jpg

Just outside the frames are tons of tooling and extra chucks.

"Wow, that's gorgeous!" I said. Figuring the price would be ridiculous, I asked for it. "What do you think is fair?" he asked. I told him about my South Bend lathe I bought for $150 at an estate sale, but that that was a steal. I was still expecting to walk away with just the sander when he said "No, I was thinking more like $300."

:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

"I'll take it!" I said. I arranged to go get it tomorrow.

I poked around the garage, learning more about the guy who used to own all the stuff, and picked up four Pony corner clamps, a stack of Scotchbrite pads and a battery terminal cleaner for another $5.

I'm bringing a buddy, my son, and another wad of cash in case there's anything else going for such prices. I'll post more pictures of the pick-up tomorrow.

Ok that thing is badass! I didn't even know there was a craftsman commercial lathe made. Nice find!

Had a nice weekend of acquisition, so far at least!

Woke up to this "universal household motor" and breast drill outside my doorstep.

32 volts ac or dc, brushes are still usable and it is in perfect shape, the spring tension is nice and tight too. No idea what to do with it.
And the breast drill was a millers falls.

My neighbor saw them at the dump reuse zone and grabbed them.

Then yesterday I answered a cl ad for misc parts, turned out it was an old neighbor up the road. Gave myself extra time to pick it up as he is a very talkative guy with a jam packed garage, still goes out every weekend to sales. About an hour and a half later I left with 50ft of 6/3 building wire, a parts organizer, a bunch of much needed parts and a wallet $45 lighter

And then yesterday morning I decided to hit up a couple promising yard sales 15 min away. First one yielded another shopmsith 10er in good shape with all the knobs and everything and a military armorer's tool chest m1 full of tools for $80.

The box is huge though, 20 long 14 high!

The guy told me to come back with 3 friends and a truck to load the shopsmith, it was too heavy and big for me. Proved him wrong...

Glad I brought my dad's prius though, I fit it in my car later in the day and it was a squeeze...

As for the second sale, couldn't find it! Wasted 25 minutes getting there and trying to find it off of a main rd. No signs and not visible from the road.

My sunday exercise regime (walking around the local flea market) didn't yield much this week. I ended up gabbing with the reseller who bailed on friday's estate sale, he was the smart one. Then later, I spent $2 at another table just so I wouldn't go home empty handed.

We hit the local flea market this morning and I added a couple more CM =V= wrenches to a rack that I am slowing filling ($5) and 2 CM ratchets along with a Bonney RF45 wrench ($20). Not the best deals, but all the CM stuff filled voids in my collection.

I had no clue what the Bonney wrench was until I got home... looks like it is used for refrigeration repair.

Saturday's saves from the flea market:

pic 1: pair of European (I think German post-war but not sure) military shovels, $8 for pair

pic 2: odd looking hammer (perhaps it's a meat tenderizer?), plumb bob, red signal light, Slaymaker lock and key, pair of drill bits, torch sparker, 1970s Coke bottle, and a Craftsman socket all for $8

pic 3: pair of slip-joint pliers (Millers Falls and Craftsman), short-handled nippers (no name), and Craftsman 1/4-drive ratchet and socket, $5 for all

pic 4: pile of wrenches - left side: pair of Indestro auto-kit type wrenches, 3 European-style DOEs no name, and Craftsman ignition wrench. Right side: Indestro DBE, pair of Barcalo-Buffalo DOEs, and 3 no-name wrenches - all for $6.

Nice scores BB! That "No name" vise is most likely Pana-vise. Maybe check the underside of the base? I have that one and several others of different models. That one can be used to hold small printed circuit cards in the groove of those rubber jaws.

Ok, a few interesting things today;

I first got these 5 glass light shades for a staggering amount of $2!

attachment.php

Why? became a couple of years ago at an antique store we picked this hanging chandelier (Shown upside down, it hangs and this is the downward facing side), and the thing had no shades and it takes a bit of a substandard size shade where the three screws clamp the glass. So finding any shade that fit was problematical. SWMBO's taste for style glass also made some restricting (and expensive) choices...

attachment.php

For the quoted price I was all over these, even if they didn't fit; but they DID! Even better, SWMBO was OK with these! So I'll clean it up, and make sure any wiring issues are taken care of, and this is heading for our kitchen!

A bit later I found a small plastic Craftsman "truck box", and for $3 I'l find a use for it...

Latest still at another stop I spotted this Anvil case, and asked "how much?" And Its $3 box day! 24" long 9" wide 10 tall... I'll find a use for it!

At an Estate sale I found this little piece: Model Cannon? Maybe a telescope? its nickle plated brass, and the makings appear to be Japanese. The end has a (not deep) hole, leading me to lean to the cannon theory.

attachment.php

Same place; SWMBO liked this Yard shelf, and a clay pot (not shown) and we got all three for $10.

And at yet another place I picked up this Cast iron tired table for a tenner, I'll de-rust and paint and decide if this goes inside or outside...

attachment.php

Same place my youngest picked up (No pics) a lamp she fell in love with, and SWMBO for a framed picture for the frame four and 3 bucks respectively.

Nothing under the base, but it had "YE-60" or "YE-80" casting marks.

Blue bomber: I am very jealous of you and your lathe finds. I would like to have either of your steals in my garage but on my coast finding a lathe for under a grand means it is most likely scrap iron.

Maybe it was a pen holder meant to sit on a desk?

Ok that thing is badass! I didn't even know there was a craftsman commercial lathe made. Nice find!

Oh yeah BlueBomber, YOU ****!!!!

BlueBomber - the obligatory YOU ****! but even more so because we're in the same state.
Great score

y-o-u s-u-c-k

Bluebomber you ****. And congratulations.

While the guy was giving stuff away did he let you band his wife, too?

Man, you hit the jackpot this weekend!

Gentlemen, thank you. I chalk it up to good luck and a target rich environment around Boston. Well, that and going to sales every weekend.

That said, I will be taking one of those hypothetical breaks we occasionally hear folks talk about. I am officially calling "Uncle". I now own three band saws, two table saws, three drill presses, a dozen locking pliers of various manufacturers, a tool box drawer overflowing with DBE wrenches, a workbench full of things either listed on E-bay or that need to go on it, and as of today, I have only one car in my three car garage due to no places yet to put this weekend's acquisitions. Not to mention the hole it blew in my wallet. I have a heavy-duty 12" metal lathe that I really don't know how to use yet, as well as welding equipment I'm not very good with, and a long list of projects and home improvement ideas that are not getting done.

Like the boa constrictor, I need time to digest, rest and eliminate. I need time to actually use the cool tools I'm piling up in there. Hell, my Mustang's been sitting for three weeks, because it's easier to go buy stuff than it is to finish installing the top. This hobby of estate sale-ing is really fun and more than a little addicting. I may resume it again in the future. Maybe when I actually get my woodshop built. Or get retired.

Meanwhile, I'll live vicariously through the rest of you. As I said, it's a target rich environment out there. You all can and will find some pretty cool stuff.

Don't be too jealous - I liken it to getting strike twice by lightning. I don't think it will ever happen to me again. Plus, although I own it, I really don't know how to use it. I need to fix that.

I sold the South Bend to my buddy, who had been saving for years for one and couldn't believe I found one so cheap in the next town over. I doubled my money over my original purchase from him, which covered the purchase price of my new 12" Craftsman/Atlas, and got free labor to help get all that stuff home.

Keep your eyes peeled for non-company-run estate/moving sales. It'll happen.

Cheers!

So I have been on a pretty decent tool buying spree as of late because I know the sales are winding down and I keep finding items I can sell and still get some tools in the mean time.

My pawn shop find-the guys behind the counter always laugh when I walk in because they say I always come in right after they take in a big lot of tools:bounce: I can't help it if I can smell quality tools a mile away. Anyways I picked up this lot of sk screw drivers, Klein screw drivers, knipex pliers, klein pliers/strippers for the sum total of $20:thumb up:

At a garage sale scored this nearly complete craftsman kromedge tap and die set and the gerster box below for $30. The gerster is really old. The guy said it was his grandfathers and he was a pattern maker for casting molds. It is full of starret and athol measuring calipers, straight edges and a ton of wood carving tools. Anyone know how old this box is?

Stopped by my local habitat for humanity on friday and scored this sk starter kit, proto 1/2 drive breaker bar and also various proto sockets for $17

Also hit a local estate sale/garage clean out and scored this Reed 203 in original paint-3" jaws. I am not really attached to the vise so if someone is interested hit me up! Scored a mac tools 4 way metric wrench set from 9mm up to 19mm. Also scored a bunch of pairs of vise grips including the gift set pictured :) I think I will save that set to give to my son some day when he is older!
