So yesterday I was holding out. I went to an auction and bought. 2 lots. First was a bunch of loupes that will mostly become gifts. 2nd was a fowling piece from early 1800's. In truth this was my only reason for attending. I won't discuss what I paid but it was more than my usual budget. However it appraises at better than $2000 in current condition, and if I were to put it up for sale the profit would be substantial. The mechanism and possibly the whole gun was made by Henry Deringer. The barrel is 43.5" long.
So here are a couple of pics.

Thanks. It is primarily the barrel length that makes it a fowling piece. Keeping the shot tighter. The thickness of the barrel at the muzzle is also relatively thin. There's plenty of meat around the breach though. It could shoot a ball and should be relatively accurate for a smooth bore. I believe it was always a percussion cap.Cool piece!
What makes it a fowler? Lots of smoothbore muskets that shot ball back then.
if early 1800's, I'd guess its either a very early percussion cap gun, or possibly was converted from Flintlock?

The third photo, the green driver looks like it has a female square drive in the end? Any name on it ? it looks similiar to ones I picked up awhile back.

and walked away but he was doing that to everyone on everything! We went back an forth a minute while I looked it over and I said what's your bottom. $30 so I bought it. I don't think I could have left it for $50 though.
I didn't know it was 'post to look like that....but it's shiny now!

Thanks a bunch, BC!I acquired this bee-utiful 1940s Dunlap scroll saw tonight from Bobcat, who needed to make some room in his garage. Since I sold off my Craftsman bandsaw, I figured I could give it a home.
Check out how nice this saw is. I believe the paint is original, as is the Sunlight Motors 1/4 hp electric motor. Bobcat burnished up the cutting table until it shines. I don't have any immediate need for a scroll saw, but I'm proud to have this seasoned old tool in my garage. I may just sit out in the garage with a soda and look at it.
