I was getting my phone ready so I could put them on YouTube! My girl said she was ready to defend her self if needed. The lady was there with a sister or friend, they looked to be in their 60's or older, my girl is a couple decades younger and still spunky so my money is on her.

Hit an estate sale that opened on Sunday because the owners sold the place due to divorce. Husband had cleaned out the tools but I picked up this truck toolbox that had a new come-along in it for $30, working neon beer bottle light that will need some new "decoration" for $20 and an old metal traffic light for $60. Pictured under the toolbox is 6 of 7 Coca Cola plastic boxes I picked up for $20 earlier.

After that I swung by the flea market and found the elusive Craftsman grey/red mid box. In poor but restorable shape, $60 for top and bottom and sold the bottom for $45 right away.

I was helping a friend move stuff last week with my small trailer with the long ramp on back which made it easy to load up this Lista roller cabinet for $65 that popped up on Craigslist. I included my technique for cutting the NeverRust liner from Lowes, flip the drawer upside down, lay the liner on top and cut it on the edge.

I'm starting to get this. You get more stuff, then you need more cabinets. You have more cabinets ... then you can get more stuff.

Great finds.

Mattblast, you **** you **** you ****! WOW what a score!

Thanks Blue. The only issue is I now have 7 grinders/buffers. Have to sell a few. Hard to pick favorites. Do I keep the ones I overpaid for years ago or newly acquired bigger ones. I think I'll go with bigger.

Was able to get this set off of Craigslist for $100, minus the 17mm. I was able to get the 17mm off eBay for $17. So $117 for the set, they are Flank Drive Plus

Local machine shop lost the lease on their overflow building. They were motivated to sell because anything left gets scrapped on Tuesday. My office closed early so I headed over and had about an hour to browse.

Owner gave me a tour of the facility and let me dig around in the building. His dad started the business in the 60s. I'm heading back Friday to take another look while they pull things off the shelf.

By the time I got home it was dark but I got a photo at the Wegmans parking lot which was well lit.

Then two Baldors for $50 each. Both 3/4 HP single phase on stands. 8". Grinder is a 8100WD and buffer is a 333B. Missing left nut and flanges.

Then I got a 9x9x1/2" 13lb piece of 17-4 stainless and 6x6x1/2" 5 lb piece of copper. $5 and $10

Lufkin 4" square $5

And if you looked closely in the truck you'll see my $40 Wilton C1. My first bullet vise. I'm going to clean it up but leave it unpainted.

Turns out is is a 1945 model. Marked 1245

Even better! Here's one I had but sold a couple months ago. I liked it so much I had to pick up another, a C2 1952 I think. I don't have any pic's of it yet but I will soon. I seen in your pic of the vise there is a date stamped near the base... 1943 ?1948? This is not common. I wonder if it was done by the original owner. When you get time you might post it over on the Vise thread maybe some one over there may know something more about it .

Another $70 at machine shop.

fe36e7211dad0626dc7c8ae7c02cb6e8.jpg

Baldor stand was $10
Electrical box was free
5 lbs copper $10
Piece of delran
Baldor 500 diamond grinder $50

Almost got a darex sharpener for another $100 but then foreman mentioned they still use it occasionally and it was off the table. I can't be mad as he then loaded me up with he forklift. That made for an easy load.

I'm going to replace to reversible switch on the Baldor with a standard one.

Amazing deals! I'd love those copper bars. They would make some killer vise jaws for one I have in mind! Let me know if you want to move them.

I haven't checked in here in awhile.

A pretty pedestrian mixed bag of wartime take-home at the Early Bird today...

20151127_092232_resized_zpst8cfvhpb.jpg

Under the 12-point sockets, to the left of the 1930's era Plomb model 4410 5/8-18 thread axle whacker is the only thing worth mentioning. Bubba REALLY wanted a 19/32" double-hex opening and a 7/8" hex opening on both ends of a tool!! Unfortunately, Bubba ruined a really nice, correct, collectible wartime GMTK "-D-I-" marked 1219 Duro-Chrome socket when he spot welded it to the end of cut-down Mossberg spark plug wrench with a really nice old < M > logo!

Went to a flea market today and found this Simplex Slave lock for $5.00.

I HOPE it doesn't need a complex circuit to run it - it runs on 120V and seems fine when I tested it.

I see online that there are complex signals sent over the 4th RED wire that do the time synch magic.

For $5.00 it can hang on the wall without running and be right 2 times daily.

Cheers

Jim

Jim you should be able to get it going if I'm not mistaken, that is and "institutional" clock for schools, hospitals and the like so they can send a signal to reset the time globally; it should work without (but setting it might be entertaining...)

The one and only sale was a family run estate sale in a 1914 house; possibly the original family?

Pretty picked over by the time I got there 30 min after opening so the family must have staged a raid, or had "early birds" contact them for a "special sale"? :dunno:

A couple of clamps, I thought the silver Columbian was aluminum, but it's just paint... and a cast iron pull handle,

attachment.php

An antique floor lamp base, (a nice Marble piece on the base) and I found part of the top separately in the garage. I can replace the missing part easily enough. I already have it's spot picked out after refurbishing it. I have a casual goal of having most all of the lighting in the house older than I am, but updated to CFL or better still, LED lamps. (I just bought 8 LED Edison bulbs for two of the antique lamps plus a spare)

Thanks Matt, this will be the third Floor lamp, for me. I have one over my right shoulder next to my easy chair/"office" (I have my Laptop on a 32" 1X12 for the "desk") and another I just finished across the room next to a leather couch.

This doesn't count the table lamps... One My SIL gave me sits on my 1880's roll top, and two more are in my office at work, another in our Master Bedroom, two wall lamps on either side of the bed in there, and I just hung the day before Thanksgiving an antique chandelier over the kitchen table.

None of this counts my Antique oil lamp collection, mostly on top of two 5X5 Ikea Expedit "bookcase" that hold the vinyl record collection.

Only 3 iffy sales listed today. It was a wet and dreary day, few buyers were out. It's been quiet on CL because of the holiday. It turns out that the sales weren't too bad.

The first wasn't too far away. It was sparse for hand tools, but had an old open wheel Boice-Crane bandsaw that I had trouble leaving behind.

Pics 1-4 - $20
a bullet shaped body dolly
un-identified body spoon (remnants of a decal, but can't decipher - pic 2)
1/2-13 threaded handle
2 wood splitters (1 may have been a blacksmith's hot chisel, it will need to be re-ground)
Ladder hook
a large nut and bolt (I bought it because ------ IT'S A BIG FREAKIN' NUT AND BOLT - duh !)
_______ nut 3-3/4"AF
_______ bolt 13-1/4" long. 2-1/2-8 thread
_______ center hole on each end of bolt is 2-1/2" deep, 3/4=10 thread

Stop #2 was at a house with no power in the garage (good thing I carry a flashlight in my pocket). The city accidentally cut a wire and refused to repair it. The seller was in her 90's and was being helped by family. I helped run an extension cord for them and set up a lamp so they wouldn't trip. I was the only one that showed up for the sale. I kind of felt bad for her, so I paid up without haggling.

pics 5&6 - $31
a Vimco type worklight (off a battered 50's Cman scrollsaw and will go on a restored one. It's even painted Cman grey already)
Channellock #337 cutters
a roll of roofing rubber 80" wide x unknown length

The last stop was another sparse tool sale, but scraped up a few goodies.

pic 7 - $5
3 75w 130v lightbulbs (hard to find)
4-1/2" pulley - 5/8" arbor
Williams S-51 1/2dr ratchet (the handle was cracked (not seen in picture), but I needed the guts to rebuild one in my drawer)
Craftsman 12" adjustable wrench (circle Y)
#1221 awl ??? (unknown maker)

Had pretty good luck at the local habitat restore and goodwill. First pic is a lansky sharpening kit, older one and missing one stone, but put a nice edge on my knife, $4. The next are from the restore, was looking for a new fireplace grate and stopped at the tool section. Picked up the following:
Craftsman 16" adjustable wrench 44606, $10
Blackhawk 1/2" ratchet 49997, $3
USA Vise Grip, $4
Hanson number set, $5
4 piece made in USA DOE wrench set, no brand $4

Not killer prices but had a need for each tool aside from the Blackhawk. It is just cool.

$10 at estate sale and $25 at garage sale next door. Garage sale had only one table but some good deals. I got the hammer, pry bar, pliers, ratchet, and wrenches from garage sale.

0b3f8d37d99d741f1461827cac679c79.jpg

New electrical boxes and covers and connectors
Drywall anchors
Bosch trim bit
Scrap aluminum, brass and copper
Mini pry bar
1" and 2" bushings
Craftsman cross force combo wrench set missing 1/2" though. Probably will cost me more to buy missing that I paid for the set.
Tank wrench
Bell system sledge
Linesman pliers. No markings
Ratchet strap
2 more 6 gallon milk crates

b0faaf3e41101139991b790260ee15f8.jpg

3/4" pony clamp
Scuba weights on belt

The estate sale was in its 3rd day but held by a company that I try to avoid. I should have known it wouldn't go well when the house was still packed. They are way over priced and not too friendly. I went twice a few years back but avoided them until last month when I went to one accidentally and got a good deal. Well they were nasty again trying to guilt me into paying 3x more on anything. I had to pull a few things from my pile and put them away. In the end I got them from $45 to $10 by removing a box of strapping crimps and a old garage chair. Funny thing is garage sale guy mentioned to me that they were yelling at him saying he had no right to have sale next to their big estate sale.

Matt, that just goes to show what maroons they are... :headscrat :wtf:

I went to an Antique store yesterday with the family. They bought a ton more than I did, but I did find a couple of cool old books:

a 1961 book on American Guns, and a 1941 Brown and Sharp Catalog. the catalog is in mint condition (so acquired and set aside while the owner went to war?) :dunno; 512 pages!

attachment.php

Inside is this interesting piece: a list 8 pages long of items withdrawn from the catalog "Due to the present emergency"

attachment.php

It's dated nearly 9 months PRIOR to Pearl Harbor! So we were definitely on a war footing well before the bombs dropped.

The temporarily withdrawn list gives you a feel for the times doesn't it? In some of the British catalogues I have from just after the war they have a note that any purchase of American tooling has to be approved by The Ministry of Supply.

One auction yesterday. Didn't turn out as I had hoped. There was a big turnout despite the freezing rain. I only managed a few buys for 36 bucks.
Milwaukee 6507, 4 amp corded sawzall
Western auto all metal tool/tackle box full of odds and ends ball peen hammer, hatchet ,Vessel impact driver No. 5 vise grips, KD and Wizard brake tools. and mud dobbers.
Also picked up a box full of quilting books and patterns for my boss at home. Scored a few brownie points for that one!

picked up a scroll saw and drill press. The saw seems just fine, the DP trips circuit breaker when turned on, need to investigate that motor. And find some manuals on the DP too.

That's a cool looking dp. Do you know the brand? I think I see the date 1944 stamped into the motor.

Cool books Outlaw! I look for cool old literature like that at all the sales but only got lucky once or twice. I even stop in the local goodwill and thrift stores and have found plenty of old engineering books and things but nothing as cool as those, great find!

Paul and Topop, good stuff guys!
