Came across these tools recently where a guy was having to move and he was just going to get rid of them.. so I got all 3 for $40.

And an old Rockwell Porta-Band That seams to run nicely but is tossing its blade.
Not sure whats wrong with it but I would like to fix it
]

Good deal! Check the tracking adjustment, tires and blade guides.

Circumstances allowed me to get to a rare Thursday sale this morning. The best thing about the sale was that it got me out of the house :bounce: ......

........... and that was pretty much it.
I only spent $3.

- A 6" stillson type pipe wrench (6 guys in a 6x8 shed with no light) I thought it was a proto or plumb in the dark. I can't read the logo. (pic 2)

- a camera tripod w/brass telescoping legs. Extends to 40" (missing head) (pic 3)

- Craftsman Long-C sliding bevel gauge. All steel, missing washer-nut (or wingnut) (pics 4&5)

:fingersx: (I've got my fingers crossed, I may have something brewing for Saturday. Wish me luck.) :fingersx:

New tires and blade installed, did not see an adjustment but I didn't spend a lot of time fooling with it. Bearing guides look good. Maybe I will mess around with it more tomorrow and then ask for some help on here.

I was late for work this morning but see a garage sale sign on the way out of my neighborhood, so I decided to turn around and check it out. Walking up the drive way, I see a two piece Kennedy tool box, with key in it, on a large rolling workbench with a very nice butcher block top. I spend a few minutes looking the tool box over, checking each drawer, making sure the key works, making sure the two sections fit together (stacking / unstacking).

I then ask a gentleman how much it is, and he says "Oh, that? That's just a demo."

"A what?"

"A demo. You know, to show how the table works. That's what's for sale. None of the rest of those tools are for sale."

He then proceeds to tell me how his son in law found the box in the trash along with the workbench, and how he'd spent $50 on the casters it was on. Boy, was he proud of those casters and how he somehow magically attached them using a "special fastener" that he also got from his son in law. I didn't have the heart or patience to look closer, for fear that I might discover something so rare as a "bolt" or "screw".

In a daze after that exchange, I sulked back down the driveway. Now you have to keep in mind that this workbench / table was 25 feet from the guy's shop, in the middle of all of the rest of the for sale items. And he had watched me fiddle with the tool box for several minutes. I'm not sure who in the hell needs to know how a table "works", but it was certainly a disappointing start to the day. Got a little better during lunch when Sears happened to have the quick release rebuild kits I needed. But I have to admit I'm still a little butthurt about it. I must be if I'm posting it here.

Because I'm in the market to either buy one or make my own, Kennedy included, I'd have offered him $150.

sorry this happened to you and i can relate to your frustration. some of my potentially greatest swap meet finds turned out to be "not for sale." it always irks me when somebody puts something out with all the rest of their **** and uses it to lure you over, but not to sell. still, swap meet sellers have been very generous to me.

I was two hours late getting to the estate sale today, but was still able to find a few items for use in my shop.

Here’s a shot at the whole group of tools:

I’m always on the lookout for small oil cans, so when I saw this small container of graphite with the brass dispensing tube, I had to have it.

I bought a box of files and rasps, among which was this small rasp from occupied Germany.

In that same box of files and rasps were some half-round rasps,

some flat rasps,

some files,

And some round rasps.

All the rasps and files are in good condition – just need overnight soaking in vinegar and cleaning with a bristle brush.

There was a box with grommet tools and grommets.

And a Stanley 78 Rabbet plane – though I have several, I just couldn’t leave it there since it’s in such good condition.

Finally, some 1” and 2” C clamps – just can’t have too many clamps.

Got one in mind that I'm going to try to hit up early. Surely you saw it and were excited by the promise of tool boxes and great prices? With my luck I'm sure I'll end up calling BS on both of those counts.

Picked up a mobile base that I'll use for my band saw, $5, and I was just getting ready to order one. Wood dolly and a Dewalt power shop radial arm saw.

Even though it's almost 70° here in Jersey the flea market was pretty dead. Only thing worth grabbing was an old Torqometer wall hanger for $15.....actually just tested it, if I'm doing it correctly it's pretty damn close, just might put it in the rotation

Right angle drill was $5. Crowntop chisel was $.25. Were these old CM crowntop chisels any good?

Dremel kit was $5. (doesn't even look used)

I like the crescent folding "T" handle screw driver. If my memory serves me well , I think those were made between 1915 and 1925. Also made to be a small hammer. That's why they are so heavy and snap into position so strong!

Thanks for the info on this. I picked one up at an estate sale a while back. Very nice tool.

I didn't fair to well this weekend and I think it's over for the year. Earlier this fall I put an ad out on a radio station that I buy old rusty tools. Never heard any thing back until this week . An elderly lady in her 80's said she was selling her husbands and father's tool collection. She said her husband was in the VA nursing home(HELL) and that she needed the money to pay for it. I knew I would be over paying for this load...When I got there she took me down to the barn. Keep in mind that Sue is 88 and walks with 2 canes. Upon opening the door to the barn she was shocked. The tool collection had been pilfered. She had a list that her husband had made and priced and nothing on the list was there. She was in tears. I was so sad for her.

I dug through the remaining stuff , trying to find something, anything, to buy. All I could find was a Mitie tiny chain tightner , An old Reed No. 0 pipe vise and an odd Hampton machine and Tool co. Wrench. I paid $50.00 bucks for the stuff....

Hit a farm auction and only managed a few deals there as well. A Italian made bowl for the "BOSS" , and Iron bird that resembles Rock Chalk Jayhawk . Or it will once it's painted. Son No. 2 Is a huge fan. Then for me I got a Stanley SW No. 45 plow plane. The plane is complete but only has one blade. And finally 2 small US flags. The star formation caught my eye but no one else's at the auction :pimpflash. $32.00 for all.

In all I think it's been a good year

Good info there! I wouldn't have thought of the end as a hammer. There's some more info and an old ad for them on Alloy Artifacts too.

Ask him if he would take $500 for it. When he says yes, tell him that was just a demo of how everything is for sale.

Oooooo -- do I have some stories to tell you today.

So, my first stop today turned out to be at the same house as a barn sale I went to 2yrs ago (I didn't recognize the address until I pulled up to the house). Back then it was a free for all in freezing temps (single digit temps that morning with a wind) that almost came to blows because someone touched someone else's pile . It was a madhouse that made me question whether or not I wanted to continue going to estate sales.

So, who's first in line ? The same d---:monkey_pi---d that shoved me out of the way of the toolbox and then blocked everyone else out until he had cleaned it to the bones.

They opened the barn early, so I stayed to see what was left from 2013. Not many tools, but plenty of trash piles. The first thing I saw was a Greenlee Knockout set that was marked $130 but he lowered the price to $60. A good price, but still more than I wanted to pay for something I didn't really need. So I left it. Most of the prices were too high for what they had. The good stuff had sold at the first sale. In the end I only walked out with a few things.

Pic 1 - (wanted $10, but took ) $8
Copper billets - 2" cube and three 1/2x1-1/2x3-1/2
3 - 1" ball bearings

The second stop was the one I was really hot for. It was back to a sale from last week that had a basement full of tools that turned out to be almost all junk. This time the sale was run by the family and was advertised as a "TAKE IT ALL AWAY FOR FREE" sale. It was supposed to start at 10:30 so I got there an hour early so I could get in before the scrappers. There were only 4 of us there until about 10min before the house was supposed to open. 10:30-noone, 10:45-noone. 11am-the family shows, but they don't have the key to get in. It seems that the only person with the key, doesn't feel like coming out to the sale HE insisted on having. So while the family squabbles, we wait until they can drag his **** out there. The door finally opened at 11:38am. At that point, most people had left.

There wasn't really anything I wanted to drive all the way out there to get for myself, but at that point I was committed. I remembered that there were at least two craftsman tilt-table saws, so I went to see if they were still there to use as parts saws. While I was there I found a few more things that I grabbed.

Pics 2,3,4 - FREE
Dodge pulley block
unknown cast iron part (made in usa, no other markings)
a box of ILCO #1010 brass key blanks (attn. : Jeff Moss)
a base for a Craftsman 3-1/2" #5180 vise (someone bought the vise, but left the swivel base :dunno:)
Scrollsaw manual (turns out OWWM already has this one)
4-1/2" pulley, 5/8" arbor
SnapOn # SDD1 YELLOW stubby screwdriver
Fairmount 7/16" combo wrench (C)
Utica #23-4 needle nose pliers
Ardell utility knife

2X - Craftsman 103.0209 tilt-table 7" saws (will be parted out)
1960's/70's Craftsman 149.24121 8" tablesaw

a Fence for above Craftsman saw ( I was hoping it would fit my bandsaw but it's 2" too long. I'll use it until I find the proper fence)
(someone else walked out with the miter gauge before I could find it)

Then, on the way to the last stop, I had to go past stop #1. So, I stopped in to see if the knockout kit was still there. It was. Since it was nearly closing time for the sale, I was able to get him to drop the price further.

Pics 5 & 6 - $41
Greenlee Knockout Kit #7306 (broken clasp on box, but otherwise working and almost complete)
Soapstone and holder

Finally off to the last stop. I got there just before closing. Most of the tools were gone. I found a few stray wrenches, and lamented missing out on finding a full set.

Pic 7 - $1
SK-Wayne C-14 7/16" combo wrench
SK C-22 11/16" combo wrench
Williams #1162 1/2" combo superrench
unknown round needle nose 4" pliers

Jake, those Ilco 1010 blanks are for Sargent locks...I can use them :p

I'll try to get them in the mail this week, if I can get out of the house. If not, it may be next saturday.

I see him at sales often, Karma hasn't found him yet. :dunno:

Andover/Lawrence line. Not much else there to get.

Do you have much luck parting out table saws?

Never tried before, I'll have to let you know after I start. I'll start here, and then maybe post them over at OWWM later. :dunno:

Nothing local, but I had a couple of addresses in the collage town we had to take my youngest back to. No tools listed, but other interesting things so...

This stop had a HUGE 3 way Knight Speaker. 15" the Motor/Magnet assembly weighs a ton!. For those not into audio, 3 way means the woofer (big cone) Tweeter (center horn) and Mid (covered with that cloth like stuff around the mini horn) al are in one frame. these were expensive back in the day, and can be still!

It needs one spot on the cone patched but looks great otherwise. Hopefully it will also sound great.

I also got this box near full of old service manuals from the golden era of stereo.
Lots of Pioneer and JVC, I haven’t had time to sort through it.

And a few books. A history book on Greece from 1925, and two shakespears

I mentioned 2 stops, but we had a TOO and I got these for resale. First time I’ve ever found guardian service with the glass tops!

Thanks for the info. It came with an Atlas stand.

Nice! Mind sharing price? Just watch the tracking of the belt on the sander, if it gets too far to the left (facing machine) it will rather quickly eat into the frame.

40. I just wanted the stand for my CM blockhead. He had the money in his hands and was still trying to convince me it worked. Lol.

The last stop was the only place I found a usable tool... A champion clamp on wood vise. Very rusty, but both screws are free, so it should cleanup fine!

And about 9 lbs or so of fishing weights.

$2 for both vise and weights!

I picked up this bucket of taps and drill bits, and some misc stuff for $35 total. I unloaded more taps out of the bucket and I think there are at least 75 taps.

I had two stops this morning. I stayed up all light just to hit them, they were clear across town. I'm on the couch watching all girls garage waiting for time to leave, the time arrives and off I go. I get to the first stop about 10 til 7( opening time ) and there is already a crowd, nothing worth buying though and I walked it twice from both sides of the tables being sure there was nothing I missed. Finally decided to roll on to the next one, I get there and realize its one I went to before. The lady owns an antique store and once a year has a garage sale with all the junk she can't sell in her store. Last year or year before I got the jewelers lathe tools there. This year there is nothing, I leave empty handed and head home.
I decided to hit up Merc to let him know the stops both **** and he replies that he was at my first stop an hour before me and help the woman set up... :wtf:  although he did get a few things, it was nothing I would have been interested in so no loss anyways. Her prices were high too for what she had, $100 for a small plastic tool box of muzzle loading ****, $10 for an even smaller plastic empty tool box, etc. I'm sure the rest of the month will be slim pickins too... Better luck next year!!
