Speaking of Estate sales, I didn't get there early but a few gems (in a mostly tool-less garage) were to be had. No tools were advertised so that may have helped. I also got to talking with the guy that was running this one and he may be able to get me into some early or even some non-public sales... :fingersx:

So I picked up a Stanley No. 18, A nice Tap holder, Xacto miniplane (not sure this would manage balsa wood, but I have a lot of other Xacto tools...), A "Dowel It" dowel jig clamp, and a set of Craftsman Router bits. $10 all!

The router set was an 18 piece set and has had a couple of things added. It also came with the paperwork and a neat little manual for routing with Copyright dates of 1973 76, 79 & 82.

What do you guys think is the time you should arrive at a estate sale if you see something you really want like the wilton vise?

If its a real good tool sale I have been known to show up 3 hours early and still be #3 on line, but usuall 1.5-2 hours will get you a 1-5 number. Like Oulawmws said Its will be picked over quick. Last 2 sales I went to were picked over VERY well in 30 min.
Last time I showed up 3 hours early to a sale it paid off big. And you can hear it in the grumbling and folks saying "all the good stuff is gone" walking past the 60 people on line when you leave.

Around here, it depends on what is advised AND who is running the sale. I've been to sales where the first one on the list showed up at midnight and slept in their car. Other sales I've showed up late and been the first one in.

Some sellers hand out numbers before the sale. Usually an hour before opening, so you need to read the ad carefully or know the sellers habits. Other sales, the first one there will start a list themselves and the seller will use it to start the numbers.

I try to pick the best looking sale and show up about an hour early (more for numbers), then go to the others. It's a gamble.

The early bird gets the worm, but you also need to know which estate sales are worth the time.

Around here some of the ones run by professionals are a joke. Their prices on Day 1 are insane. (like Ebay asking prices!!) If you waste a couple hours the opportunity cost is a whole lot of garage sales you will have missed during "prime time".

Some estate sales are better to hit Day 2 when they do half price day.

I keep a list of the professional estate sale companies that are worth it and those that price things up in the stratosphere and aren't worth the wasted time.

I can't count the number of times I decided to skip professional estate sales and hit the jackpot at g-sales.

IMHO the best estate sales are run by the immediate family.

That's a tough one. If you go to a lot of them and you know many of the regulars then you should have an idea what every one is after. If not then be early and make a bee line.

Slim pickens at the only sale for the weekend. 12 bucks
Small radio flyer wagon-grandkidlets
1/4" craftsman ratchet
File brush
automatic battery charger

There is one auction for tomorrow so we'll see how that goes.

This morning I went to 3 sales. The last two were worthless. One was a repeat that I checked out becase I was nearby, and the other was run by a company that I hate dealing with. Nothing at either.

The first stop this morning was back to yesterday's sale to see if they got the garage door to open yet. No. While I was there I did another tour of the basement. It was a lot quieter today, so I had a chance to do some digging and came up with a few more things.

another "Mechanic's Choice" parts box. (same as the one from yesterday)
3 broken plastic tip hammers (I'll toss the heads and use the handles for other hammers)
a drop light cage

He wanted $15 for the parts box and threw the other stuff in for free.

I'll be going back next weekend. There is another room in the basement that was closed. It will be open next weekend and hopefully they'll have the garage door issue fixed by then.

TBD if I did good or not today. My goal is always to sell enough to cover what I spent (meaning FREE tools for me!) Spent about $80 on below and other stuff, including some SO Octo-grips (P3 P4), Complete Billings OE wrench set, and some (what I think are) pretty rare Keen Kutter nail punches AND cold chisels:

Usually numbers are handed out an hour before, BUT that can vary by vendor. I'd say 15-30 mins before numbers go out (I usually do 15, but on a popular one there are people there at 30).

All the estate sales in my area do one hour before start time for numbers. My estate sales are a huge hit or miss some estate sales are home runs like the one i went to yesterday or really bad like ones trying to get $5 per wrench and $3 per socket which is insane! The one with the vise actually was way overpriced as well i don't know why they missed the mark on the wilton vise?

That's a cool set of Billings.

Yea, but I'd rather have the small handles for other heads. It's hard to find the right one sometimes. This would give me an option.

Good finds guys, nothing much going on around here for a couple weeks by the looks of it, maybe something will pop up soon.

Thanks for putting up pics of your cream separator. Could see it being used as grinder or even a vise stand.

A year ago I bought a DeLaval which I intended to sell, but still have and restored it back to working condition.

Mike

Beautiful job on the resto. It looks just right, not overdone. Mine has no nice brass nametag, in fact no identifying marks I could find at all. I have no plans to try to restore mine. It's been sitting out in the weather for decades, and I doubt any of its moving parts will ever move again. When I tipped it over on its side to get it in the car (With help! It must weigh 200 lbs!) a quart of rusty water poured out of the gearbox. Not a good sign.

Here's my first finds for the year.
From a auction today, 2 of the longer locking c clamps, made in Dewitt. Paid $32 after premium and taxes, but they don't come around much and they are in great shape.
First auction I've been to in a while, it was fun bidding against this guy.

The below is from a Estate sale yesterday, got there around 9:30 and it was wiped out.
aaf97df86f65aaa341d4bb667c2d58a6.jpg

A real old DeVibliss spray gun, don't look like it's been used, a Blackhawk ball pein, just can't pass them up. Three hex pipe thread dies, misc punches and files, old Milton blow gun. A Fluke 77 meter, chain wrench.
My favorite is a CM adjustable file handle. I never knew these existed. Trying to make out the number, but it's worn off. Has patent numbers.

Outlaw my dad had the exact same kit for his craftsman router I think when we split his tools up my brother got the router and bits that brings back some memorys.

This is my second one of these; The first is the same config, but in a metal box with the Crown Logo embossed in the metal. This freed up some space in my home made storage box (well the box was adapted, I added a drilled holder for the bits..) for the bits too large for these two.

I'm still not there, and I probably need to take the plates out of these and make a nice case for the bit so I have ONE stop to select from...

Hmmm I keep finding nice wooden boxes at yard sales.. maybe one of those...

Now that you mention that I think dads box was metal I remember it was like a router bit set that sears sold for there routers. I will have to look at my brothers to see if his box had the crown logo next time i go over to his place.

I have a few of the plastic ones too, I think I'll drill a nice slab of wood to fit one of my carry boxes or storage drawers. Good idea Outlaw!

Nice Billings set. I found the 1009 in my 1960 Billings # 50 catalog. Not the L-1009 just 1009 so yours may be newer but nice info none the less.

Here's a data point: I recently arrived at a estate sale with tools at 9:30 am for a 10:00 am opening. I was #13 in line. See my posts in this thread.

I did okay, but might have done a little better if I had gotten there at 9:00 am.

BFBOB:

The bottom base on your cream separator is definitely different. Did a quick look online of pictures of various brands and didn't find one that had that heft or shape.

Kind of reminds me of a visible gas pump bottom that was cut off/shortened and re-purposed for a base for the cream separator. In any event, good item to have grabbed, whatever you decide to do with it.

Thanks for sharing! I bet the "L" is for the "life-time" designation of the branding.

I'd guess "L" = long pattern vs the stubby wrenches. (not that those are long by today's standards...)

Edit: Hmm, catalog pic looks the same...

People must have been hella stronger back in the day, as short as so many wrenches were made back then...

Or maybe square head bolts into wood or partially wood things were just not tightened so much as we do today. A lot softer bolts/nuts compared to today also, so would not take as much tightening.

Thanks Outlaw, the catalog listing is interesting. At $.89, I'll order 30 of them!

I've been picking up the wood, plastic and even a few brass handles. I just need to install what handles have and use the adjustable for any odd balls. I can use it for a large pin vice.

Guys I'm at an auction and it's got a lot of John Deere socket sets. I wonder if anyone here knows who makes them for John Deere

Some of the vintage John Deere tools are Bonney IIRC. I'm not sure who makes the newer stuff.

Edit: Bonney would be 80s and before or maybe even older.
