It's nice to see so many new names posting their finds. I think this thread is going to be very very productive this year.

That's not my point, it's a hobby or "business" for you and others, fine, great, have at it. In my experience though, in my area most sales have ~20-40 year old hand tools that are often way behind in technology or condition yet the seller will often try and compare to modern pricing. If that guy can't see my issue of him comparing the old all bare metal air drill which he stated as equivalent to the modern $308 drill he quoted, then I am glad he is happy. Just like my older friction slide tool boxes. They work great for certain applications, but I am not foolish in thinking they are equivalent to modern kra/krl/etc boxes in features, performance or value.

As I've gotten a bit older, bit wiser and a bit richer, and tasted the quality and convinences of even off shore modern hand tools my opinion of used tools has greatly changed.

Just my 2cents

ZK Oh I see your point completely and mostly agree. I like the history of old tools and the evolution of them . I buy and sell a lot of brace and bit sets. A lot of folks still use them believe it or not. Does it mean they compare or are better than today's cordless ? Not a chance. Of course working with wood is much different than metal . Why heat and beat when you can CNC? but many still heat and beat .
I wish they would make a tool box with 1950's style with todays slides and conveniences. Now that would be worth what they cost today.... IMHO

Starting this year off nicely. Here's some goodies I have picked up.
Baldor 3/4 hp grinder 110v with stand for $90
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1452389353.648383.jpg
Victor torch gauges for $10 for all
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1452389363.961512.jpg

Stainless steel table with legs, and snap on toolbox filled with proto, snap on, wright, Mac sockets. $30 for that group buy. All of these were at the same place as the grinder
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1452389394.680647.jpg

New location..
Basically brand new dewalt 4 1/2 grinder and 7" grinder and Dayton 1 1/2 ton chain hoist all for $100.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1452389588.957657.jpg

Now a couple unmentionables..
Snap-on 68" Epiq in Arctic silver, not perfect but still great condition
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1452389615.591587.jpg

Then this Snap-on Krl7022, came from same location as the grinders. Also the trailer came with this box.. Combo deal galore.

Pawn shops and a craigslist deal today.

Profax carbon arc gouger (new), Carlyle 3/8 drive long handle ratchet, Mac 1" four way angle wrench, and 3 loose Mac sockets for $100 at the first stop

Loose wrenches and clamps at the next stop $35

and a Snap On 3/8 drive metric set from a craigslist deal. Was slightly upset, the package was new and unopened in the picture. When I get there the dude says sorry I had to open it and use one socket. I looked them all over and I couldn't tell which he had used. He was asking $300 but I talked him down to $200 since he had opened it. I was happy at that. Then upon closer inspection I notice that the shallow 19mm is a 6 point where all the others are 12 point. My guess is that he either lost or broke the 12 point and replaced it. Not a big deal, but I will swap it out with the correct one just to satisfy my OCD.

What kind of bags do you guys use for these sales? Ever had anyone hassle you for using one?

I have several canvas bags that I picked up at different sales, they're like larger reusable shopping bags. One is an old softball toting bag that a coach would use for equipment. Lot of guys like old newspaper delivery bags so they can have both hands free.

Far majority of sales don't mind a carry bag. Occasionally they'll say no bags in their on-line ad and then I've seen people with plastic buckets or boxes.

I'll give you a You **** on the gouging torch. I just bought the same one for $150 from my LWS. Definitely a nice torch. Which model is the one you picked up?

I hit a rare Sunday Estate Sale today and found the workbench in the corner of the basement. There were some pliers and I grabbed 2 pairs of Channellock pliers for $1.00.

They are a pair of #718 and a pair of #417's.

A quick clean and voila! I still need to clean the handles on the #718's.

Cheers

Jim

Answered a cl ad this morning. The guy had some electric tools and 2 old carpentry boxes he just wanted out of his way! He wanted some one to take all for one money but I had zero interest in the stuff with a cord. But the pair of carpentry boxes where right up my alley. I sorted through them , they had been cheery picked unfortunately so I offered the guy 20 bucks and he jumped on it. :lol_hitti I should have started lower.
Any way here's a list of the mentionable items besides the two boxes them selves.
Palmer 10" folding draw knife
8 and 12 " Girard money wrench's. Now Girard went out of business in 1902 and only started making this style of wrench about 1880 so .
8" auto wrench
Hand forged UPRR curved wrench !
A bayonet scabbard??? No markings - Last year I found a tool box with a WW1 MK1 inert Grenade in the bottom of a box... :shocking:
Frog gig
Schiltz bottle opener- pretty cool one.
old nippers. Can't read the maker but they are forged and have a nail puller on one handle end and a screw driver on the other.
Old wood chisel . Can't make out the logo yet. I can only see an arrow :headscrat
Tiger tool co. Stillson style 14" pipe wrench
Ford auger brace bits- made by Miller falls. They have both logos on them...
Set of Atlas brace bits.
Solar brace
Heller Horse logo file and rasp.
Old boxes of hardware still in the box. Walden Worchester 9/16- 3/4 Socket wrench

It's gona take a few listings to get all the photo's in.

Armstrong w/a Billings or Williams w/a Billings ?
Either way, good find. Those are some solid wrenches.

Good finds!!!

BTW, I was in PA on Saturday to celebrate son's birthday and while there, took in an All Tools sale in Pittsburgh PA.

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/gms/5390676396.html

Tools were vintage and more toward the machinist side, but I did find in the mix a vintage Wilton woodworking vise that I bought.

Mike

That was my second estate sale!! I was the third or forth guy in the line. So I was with the first group that got to go in. It was confusing on where we were to go in at cause the kid wasn't really talking to us. Then the guy with the jean jacket told us it was at the side door that we were to go in at.

I saw some nice stuff but he was on the high end of pricing and wanting to bid on everything in there. Did you see the lower grey and red drawer craftsman that he wanted $500 for it all? I opened the drawer and didn't see anything that struck me as $500 but maybe a few mics.

I didn't get to that sale till around 2 pm on Saturday and I just took a quick look, given family was waiting in car.

There was still enough folks looking when I was there, but once I got the Wilton woodworking vise and negotiated the price, I headed back out to the waiting family.

I don't remember the lower grey/red drawer Craftsman, but could have easily missed it.

Glad you got to the sale, as a lot of vintage machinist items, but would expect that Sunday would have been better for a deal to be had.

Oh and post pics of the woodworking vice! I missed it as I've been looking for one to put on my bench.

Madison069:

The fellow with jean jacket had just brought out the woodworking vise just before I got there.

It's a vintage Wilton 7" that looks like it probably started out in a school.

Once I get it cleaned up, will post some pics on the Garage Sale thread.

Wow, you guys are finding some great deals! I went to one sale that advertised tools on Saturday, close to an appointment I had in the area. Guy had a bunch of stuff, alot of it unopened, but really low quality Chinese stuff. Managed to find a Vermont American mini pick set, and some consumables, like a bottle of Stabil and evaporust. Everything else was just garbage, and really overpriced. Glad I didn't make a special trip to go there.

I paid $40 just for the head like yours a while back! Gives me ideas for what to do with it. Nice score.

Hi All,
I've been busy with work and family life and although I read GJ most every day my shopping time has been non-existant for 6 months or so.Today happened to be my first day off since Christmas, auto show season is upon us and it's been an overtime madhouse.
Able to rest and relax yesterday after a short 8 hr shift I found a toolbox on CL and made arrangements to meet at 11:00 am today, seller's CL ad mentions the box is NOT Snap On,Mac ,Matco etc but since I found one a couple years back I knew immediately it was a Beach. So today thanks to a buddy who loves to tool hunt as well, loaded in my truck for $160 was this gem:
001.jpg

002.JPG

I don't think I'll be keeping the steel cart its built on,I'll probably scrap that and go back to original style casters.First steps will be to get the stickers off and clean up the paint and drawers.Probably a Spring project for me.It does have both, working, original keys and I'm hoping it will turn out almost nice as the last one I sold to a co-worker(he did the clean up,amazing job, wished I could talk him into cleaning this one)
236.jpg

I hope to be more active on GJ and get a chance to shop this coming year.

OK, met my wife for lunch in Berkeley on Friday, which was a perfect opportunity to hit the Oakland swap, where I found this group:

And today went to the Denios (no rain there, even though it is a bit of a drive) and got the following:
Is it just me, or does that Armstrong look a little bit like a williams?
Anyway, also found this:

PIcked up a double handful US socket like SK Snap On Proto, etc.
